To stop WhatsApp from automatically fetching incoming media, open Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download. On Android, clear the media types you want to stop for mobile data, Wi-Fi, and roaming; on iPhone, set each media type to Never. This controls downloads—not whether files already on your phone appear in its gallery or get deleted.
Turn off automatic downloads on Android
- Open WhatsApp and tap the ⋮ menu in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings → Storage and data.
- Under Media auto-download, tap When using mobile data.
- Clear the boxes for the media you do not want downloaded automatically—typically Photos, Audio, Videos and Documents—then tap OK.
- Repeat for When connected on Wi-Fi and When roaming.
To turn off all automatic media downloads, clear every category under all three connection types. If your version offers No media, choose it. You can also make a selective setup: for example, disable videos and documents on mobile data but leave photos enabled, or allow documents only on Wi-Fi. Check roaming separately; its setting is distinct from mobile data.
Turn off automatic downloads on iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Storage and data.
- Under Media auto-download, open each available type, such as Photos, Audio, Videos and Documents.
- Set each type you want to control to Never.
WhatsApp’s wording and layout can vary slightly by app version or language. The goal is to set each relevant media type to Never, rather than an automatic connection option.
Choose settings for your situation

| Stop large files filling storage | Disable videos and documents on the connection types where you do not want them fetched. |
| Keep voice messages or work files convenient | Leave Audio or Documents enabled only on Wi-Fi, if that suits your use. |
These settings limit future automatic downloads. When you open a media item that was not fetched automatically, you may need to tap it to download it, and it may take longer to load on a weak connection.

Stop WhatsApp media appearing in your gallery or Photos app
Downloading and displaying a file in your phone’s main photo library are separate behaviors. If your concern is gallery clutter, change the relevant display setting as well:
- Android: WhatsApp → ⋮ → Settings → Chats, then turn off Media visibility.
- iPhone: WhatsApp → Settings → Chats, then turn off Save to Photos.
These controls affect whether WhatsApp media is shown or saved in the phone’s gallery or Photos library; they do not replace Media auto-download when your goal is to limit data use or automatic fetching. They also do not remove files already present. Other services, such as Google Photos or iCloud Photos, may independently sync files that are already stored on the device.

Stop downloads or gallery saving in one chat
For a particular conversation or group, open it, tap the contact or group name at the top, and look for a media-saving or visibility option. Depending on the platform and WhatsApp version, this may be labelled Media visibility on Android or Save to Photos on iPhone. If available, change it for that chat. These chat-level controls concern visibility or saving and are not a dependable substitute for the global Storage and data → Media auto-download settings that govern automatic fetching.

Delete media that has already downloaded
Changing auto-download preferences does not clear files already on your phone. To review and remove existing WhatsApp media, open WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage. Review large files and media-heavy chats, select items you no longer need, and delete them. Take care to select only what you intend to remove.

WhatsApp announced expanded storage-management features in March 2026, including tools to find and delete large files from within a chat while retaining the conversation. Availability can depend on rollout and app version; see WhatsApp’s announcement for details.
If WhatsApp still seems to download or show media
- On Android, check all three connection types. Mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming have separate auto-download choices.
- Check the right control. For automatic fetching, review Media auto-download; for gallery display, review Media visibility or Save to Photos.
- Remember old files. A setting change does not delete previously downloaded media; use Manage storage to clean it up.
- Check other photo-sync services. Gallery or cloud backup apps may handle files that are already stored on your device independently of WhatsApp.
- Check a problem chat. A chat-specific media option may be available for that conversation or group.
- On a computer, inspect desktop settings separately. Do not assume changing your phone’s preference also changes WhatsApp Web or Desktop download behavior.
- If labels are missing, update WhatsApp and look for the current Storage and data wording. Older guides may call this section Data and Storage Usage.
What turning off automatic downloads does—and does not do
Incoming media that is not automatically downloaded generally remains in the chat until you choose to fetch it. You can still download an item manually. Turning off auto-download also does not automatically delete existing files, prevent every image created or sent from within WhatsApp from being saved, or turn off chat backups. Backup preferences are separate, so review WhatsApp’s backup settings if your concern is cloud-backup size. Disabling automatic downloads can reduce unwanted files being fetched, but it is not a complete security measure: keep WhatsApp and your operating system updated, and use care with attachments you choose to open.
