On a computer, open your document and select Tools → Spelling and grammar → Spelling and grammar check. Review each suggestion in the box at the upper right: choose Change to apply it or Ignore to leave the text as written. You can also use the spelling-and-grammar button near the upper-left toolbar. These steps describe the desktop browser workflow; mobile assistance can differ.
Run a full spelling and grammar check
- Open the document in Google Docs at docs.google.com.
- Choose Tools → Spelling and grammar → Spelling and grammar check. If you prefer, click the spelling-and-grammar button near the upper-left toolbar.
- Review the suggestion in the box at the upper right. Choose Change to apply it or Ignore to keep your text.
- For bulk actions, open More and choose Accept all or Ignore all, when available. Continue through the review until Docs says it is complete.
Bulk acceptance is convenient, but it can alter a correct name, quotation, technical term, or intended wording. Check changes in context rather than assuming every suggestion is right. Google’s spelling and grammar help documents the current desktop workflow; labels may vary slightly by account, language, or interface updates.
Fix suggestions as you write
Google Docs can show possible problems while you type. On the standard desktop interface, a red underline indicates a possible spelling issue and a blue underline a possible grammar issue. Right-click underlined text to review available actions, such as accepting a correction, ignoring the suggestion, or reporting incorrect feedback. Depending on the suggestion, pressing Tab can quickly accept it.

Spelling tools can catch many typos but may miss a correctly spelled word used in the wrong place, misunderstand a sentence, or object to a valid regional spelling. Google notes that suggestions are based on the text and do not necessarily represent Google’s views.

Add correct words to your personal dictionary
If Docs repeatedly flags a correctly spelled name or specialist term, add it to your personal dictionary. Right-click the red-underlined word and select Add to personal dictionary, where available. Or open Tools → Spelling and grammar → Personal dictionary, enter the word, and click Add.
Use the same Personal dictionary menu to find an entry and click Delete beside it if you no longer want Docs to recognize it. Names, product names, acronyms, medical or scientific terms, programming languages, and industry vocabulary are common candidates. Confirm the spelling first: adding a typo can make Docs stop flagging that typo.

Turn spelling or grammar suggestions on or off
Open Tools → Spelling and grammar and look for controls such as Show spelling suggestions and Show grammar suggestions. Toggle the relevant setting. The exact labels can vary as Docs changes its interface; Google’s suggestion settings guidance provides additional help.

These controls govern suggestions and their visual indicators. Turning off spelling suggestions does not necessarily disable every autocorrect behavior: autocorrect is separate from reviewing underlined suggestions. Spelling and grammar controls are separate too, so disabling one does not automatically disable the other.
Set the right document language
If familiar words are flagged across a document, check its language before changing other settings. In the document, choose File → Language and select the language or regional variant used for the text, then run the checker again. A mismatch—for example, a document set to one English variant while you are using another—can make legitimate spellings look wrong.
Google’s current spelling and grammar help page lists suggestions for English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian. That list should not be read as a promise that spelling, grammar, and regional-dictionary support are identical in every language or account. For a multilingual document, select the language that best matches the text being checked and review names, quotations, and other-language passages yourself.

If spell check is not working
Try these steps in order, changing one thing at a time:

- Under Tools → Spelling and grammar, confirm that spelling suggestions are enabled.
- Check File → Language and select the document’s language or regional variant.
- Run the manual Spelling and grammar check from the Tools menu.
- Test the checker with an obvious misspelling on a new line. If newly typed text is checked but pasted text is not behaving as expected, formatting or characters copied from another application may be involved.
- Refresh the browser tab, and make sure you are editing a Google Doc rather than viewing a preview, embedded file, or incompatible imported document.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions that modify text, especially other writing assistants, and test again. An extension is one possible source of interference, not the only explanation.
- Try a private or incognito window, or another supported browser. Note whether the issue affects one document, one account, or every document.
- If this is a managed school or workplace account and suggestions remain unavailable, ask the Workspace administrator whether writing suggestions are restricted.
If Docs flags just one correct word, use Ignore for a one-off exception or add the term to your dictionary if it recurs. If it flags many ordinary words, correct the language setting first. If the flagged item is grammar rather than spelling, adjust or review grammar suggestions instead. You can report a materially wrong suggestion through the available feedback option.
Desktop and mobile are not the same workflow
Google’s documented full review panel uses the computer workflow above. On Android or iPhone, spelling assistance may depend on the Google Docs app and the device keyboard; do not assume that the desktop Tools menu or review panel appears in the same form. For a complete spelling-and-grammar review, use Docs on a computer.

What Google Docs spell check can—and cannot—do
The built-in checker is useful for everyday spelling and basic grammar suggestions without adding another tool. Keep three functions distinct:
- Spelling suggestions flag words Docs considers potentially misspelled.
- Grammar suggestions offer possible changes to grammar, usage, punctuation, or sentence construction.
- Autocorrect automatically changes certain typing patterns; it is not the same as manually accepting an underline or running the review.
None is a substitute for proofreading. A checker can miss homophones and other correctly spelled but contextually wrong words; it cannot reliably verify facts, names, citations, or intended meaning. It may also be less useful with specialized vocabulary, dialects, foreign-language text, or material in images and embedded objects. For academic, legal, medical, or technical writing, examine suggestions carefully and verify terminology, quotations, code, formulas, and citations yourself.

When to use another writing tool
If you need more than basic spelling and grammar suggestions, a writing assistant may offer broader feedback. Grammarly’s browser extension supports Google Docs and provides a sidebar for reviewing suggestions. Its writing feedback can include style, clarity, usage, and tone; advanced features may require a paid plan. An extension also adds another layer of suggestions, which can clutter the document or overlap with Docs. It is unnecessary if you only need an occasional typo check, and consider your organization’s rules before using extensions with sensitive documents.

Microsoft Word is another option if you already use it or need Word-specific document workflows or offline editing; its spelling-and-grammar command is separate from Google Docs. Neither tool removes the need for human review when accuracy matters.
