To get Nightbot on Twitch, sign in to Nightbot with the Twitch account for your channel, open its Control Panel, click Join, and follow the instructions. If Nightbot needs moderator status, enter /mod Nightbot in your channel chat, using the exact bot username shown in Nightbot. Then test with !commands.
What Nightbot does on Twitch
Nightbot is a third-party chat bot, not a Twitch-owned service. It can reply to custom commands, post scheduled messages, and filter certain kinds of spam. It also supports features such as regulars and song requests. Twitch describes bots as tools built by third parties and recommends using them alongside Twitch’s own moderation features, not as a replacement for them (Twitch’s moderation guidance).
Nightbot’s documentation lists support for Twitch, YouTube, Trovo, and SOOP; the steps below are for Twitch (Nightbot setup guide). You do not need to be a Twitch Affiliate or Partner just to set up the bot. Some individual features have separate requirements: for example, Nightbot’s !commercial command is described for partnered channels (Nightbot command documentation).
Before you start
- Sign in to the Twitch account that owns or is authorized to configure the channel.
- Use a browser with JavaScript enabled; Nightbot’s login page says it requires JavaScript (Nightbot login).
- Be ready to approve the requested Twitch authorization and to add the bot to the channel.
- Check the account name shown in Twitch and the channel shown in Nightbot. Signing in to the wrong account is an easy way to connect the bot to the wrong channel.
How to add Nightbot to your Twitch channel
- Open the official Nightbot site. Select Sign In and choose Twitch as the login provider.
- Authorize Nightbot. Sign in to the correct Twitch account and review the authorization screen before approving it.
- Check the channel in the Control Panel. Make sure it is the channel where you want the bot to operate.
- Click Join. In Nightbot’s Control Panel, click Join in the upper-right area and follow the displayed instructions to have the bot join your channel. The interface may change, but Nightbot’s documented setup path currently uses this label (Nightbot setup guide).
- Grant moderator status if prompted or needed. Follow Nightbot’s instructions. If you need to add the bot manually, use the exact Twitch username shown in Nightbot:
/mod username. Twitch documents this command for adding a moderator (Twitch channel roles). - Test in your actual channel chat. Type
!commands. Nightbot’s default command can show the channel’s commands page or otherwise confirm it is responding; default commands can be enabled, disabled, or configured, so it may not be active on every account (Nightbot command list).
Moderator status can help Nightbot perform moderation actions and avoid problems with some chat-management functions. It does not give the bot unrestricted access to your Twitch account. Because a moderator bot can act on chat, authorize Nightbot only through its official site and verify the bot account name. You can remove the role later with /unmod username, which Twitch documents as the moderator-removal command.

Add a first custom command
A custom command is a saved response that Nightbot posts when someone uses its trigger. You can create one in the dashboard or, if you have permission, through chat.
Using the Control Panel
- Open Commands in the Nightbot Control Panel.
- Select Add Command.
- Enter a command name, such as
!hello, and its response, such asHello, $(user)!. - Choose who can use it and set a cooldown if needed.
- Save the command, then test it in your channel.
Nightbot documents user levels including owner, moderator, twitch_vip, regular, subscriber, and everyone. The $(user) variable inserts the name of the person who invoked the command (command settings; user variable). A command restricted to moderators may appear broken to ordinary viewers; set the level to everyone if that is the intended audience.
Using chat
Nightbot documents this general syntax:

!commands add !discord Join the community: https://discord.gg/exampleReplace the example URL with your real invite and check how Twitch displays links in chat. Do not leave a placeholder link in a live command. Nightbot also documents !commands edit and !commands delete for updating or removing commands. Advanced parameters include -ul=userlevel for the required user level, -cd=cooldown for cooldown, and -a=!alias for an alias (Nightbot command syntax).

Command names cannot contain spaces and commonly begin with !. Set user access and cooldowns deliberately: a public link command may suit everyone, while a command that changes channel information should be restricted. A shout-out command such as !so username can be useful, but configure and test it carefully before viewers use it.
Enable useful Nightbot commands
Nightbot’s command list includes commands such as !title, !game, !marker, !winner, !regulars, !filters, and !songs. They may need to be enabled or configured, and some actions depend on permissions, channel settings, or feature eligibility. Do not assume every command is active by default. In particular, Nightbot describes !commercial as running an ad for partnered channels (command list; command configuration).
Set up timers
Timers post a message on a schedule, rather than waiting for someone to type a command. In Nightbot’s Control Panel, open Timers, create a message, choose its interval and minimum chat-line requirement, and enable it. The interval controls how much time must pass before Nightbot can post again; the chat-line requirement helps prevent messages from appearing repeatedly in a quiet chat (Nightbot setup guide).

Useful timer messages might share your schedule, Discord link, or rules, or remind viewers to follow if they are enjoying the stream. Start with one or two timers and observe how they feel in a live chat. If Nightbot talks too often, lengthen the interval, raise the chat-line requirement, reduce the number of active timers, or review command cooldowns.

Configure spam protection carefully
Nightbot’s documented spam-protection categories include blacklisted words or phrases, capitalization, emotes, links, symbols, and repetitions (Nightbot spam protection). You can configure filters in the Control Panel or manage them with !filters if your Nightbot permissions allow it.
- Start with conservative settings so ordinary conversation is not blocked.
- If the link filter is enabled, whitelist only trusted domains, such as your own site or Discord invite.
- Test settings with a moderator account before applying strict filters to viewers.
- Use Twitch’s AutoMod, chat modes, warnings, timeouts, bans, reporting tools, and human moderators as appropriate. Nightbot is a supplement, not a complete solution to harassment or coordinated attacks.
Give moderators access without over-sharing
Twitch moderator status and Nightbot management permissions are separate. Twitch moderation lets a person moderate channel chat; Nightbot’s manager access can allow trusted people to control settings in its dashboard (Nightbot command documentation). Give dashboard access only to people you trust with those settings. A moderator may need to use a command in chat without needing broad Control Panel access.

Why Nightbot may not appear or respond
Nightbot does not appear in chat
- Confirm you signed in with the Twitch account connected to the intended channel and that the dashboard shows that channel.
- Return to the Control Panel and click Join, then complete any prompts.
- Check whether Nightbot has been banned or timed out. If it has, restore its ability to participate in chat.
- If Nightbot needs moderator status, use
/mod usernamewith the exact bot account name shown in the instructions. - If the Twitch connection appears stale, disconnect or revoke the Nightbot authorization in Twitch, then sign in and authorize again through the official Nightbot site. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
- Test in the intended channel’s live chat, not only in the dashboard.
Nightbot joins but does not answer
- Check that the command exists and is enabled.
- Check spelling, including the command’s
!prefix. - Check its user-level restriction: the person testing may not have permission to use it.
- Check the cooldown; the command may not be available again yet.
- Confirm Nightbot is not banned, timed out, or otherwise unable to post.
- Verify the response and the selected channel in the Control Panel.
If the owner can use a command but viewers cannot, the likely cause is its user level. If two chat bots are installed, check for duplicate commands, overlapping timers, or conflicting filters; assign distinct responsibilities or disable duplicates.

Use the Nightbot dashboard’s controls to make the bot leave the channel. Nightbot also documents owner-only !nightbot part or !nightbot leave commands for this purpose (Nightbot command list). If you also want to remove its Twitch moderator role, enter /unmod username using the exact account name. If you no longer want the service connected to Twitch, revoke its authorization in your Twitch account settings as well.

Choose based on the job you need done. Nightbot suits a straightforward browser-based workflow for chat commands, timers, filters, regulars, and song requests. StreamElements Chatbot is an alternative to consider if you already use StreamElements; its documentation also covers features such as timers and raffles. Twitch’s native tools are important for AutoMod and moderation actions, but are not a direct substitute when your main need is scheduled messages or custom chat commands. You can use native Twitch tools alongside a bot. Avoid running overlapping bot commands and filters unless you intend to.

Nightbot is configured through its website and operates in Twitch chat; it is not an OBS plugin, and basic chat commands do not require streaming software. Not for every possible function, but Nightbot generally should be made a moderator when its setup instructions prompt you to do so or when moderation features do not work. Use the exact bot username shown in Nightbot.
