Yes—you can create a polished resume in Google Docs, either by adapting a template or building a clean document from scratch. Templates are quicker; a simple, single-column blank document gives you more control over formatting. Before applying, download the resume in the file type the employer requests and inspect that exported copy.

What to gather before you start

Collect the information you will need so you can focus on the resume rather than searching for dates halfway through formatting:

  • The job description, so you can identify relevant requirements and terminology.
  • Your employment dates, job titles, education, certifications, and contact details.
  • Notes on projects, accomplishments, responsibilities, and results you can support with real examples.
  • Links to a professional LinkedIn profile or portfolio, if relevant.

Google Docs saves changes automatically while you are online. Still, plan to download a final copy: most employers need a PDF or Word file, not an editable Google Docs link. Google’s file and download guide explains the available options.

Choose a template or start with a blank document

Find a Google Docs template

On a computer, open Google Docs and select Template Gallery near the top right. Choose a resume template to open an editable copy. You can also open a document and use File → New → From a template. Google documents both routes in its template instructions. The gallery’s contents and labels may vary with your account, language, organization, or interface.

Do not assume that a built-in template is automatically suitable for every role or automated screening system. Before using one, check that it has:

  • A clear, logical reading order and preferably one main column.
  • Conventional text headings and enough room for readable body text.
  • No essential details hidden in icons, images, text boxes, headers, footers, or decorative sidebars.
  • A layout that still makes sense when exported or opened in another editor.

A template can help with spacing and hierarchy, but it cannot replace relevant, specific content. If the design is difficult to edit or introduces unnecessary complexity, start over in a blank document.

Build from scratch for more control

Create a blank Google Doc when you want a straightforward, text-first layout. Name it by clicking the document name at the top—for example, FirstName_LastName_Resume. In Pages format, use File → Page setup to check the page size, portrait orientation, and margins. Page setup controls are not available in Pageless format; Google’s page-settings guide describes the options.

Use a readable font, consistent body text, and distinct but restrained section headings. A conventional margin around one inch is a reasonable starting point, not a rule. Keep the document in Pages format so you can see page boundaries and control breaks. Avoid trying to perfect the design before you have added and edited your content.

Add the right resume sections

For many applicants, this order is a useful starting point. Adjust it to put your strongest and most relevant evidence where a reader will see it early.

  1. Name and contact information: Include your name, professional email address, phone number, and—when appropriate—your city and state. Add a relevant LinkedIn profile or portfolio URL. Keep this information as selectable text.
  2. Professional summary: Optional, especially for some entry-level applicants. If included, use two or three targeted lines that describe relevant strengths and experience. Replace generic claims such as “hard-working team player” with evidence.
  3. Experience: List employer, job title, dates, and location if useful. Give recent, relevant roles the most detail; three to six bullets per recent role can be a workable starting point.
  4. Education: Include the degree or credential, institution, and graduation year or expected date when useful.
  5. Skills: Name specific tools, technologies, languages, certifications, or job-relevant capabilities. A long list of vague traits is less informative.
  6. Optional sections: Add relevant projects, volunteer work, awards, publications, languages, or coursework when they strengthen your fit.

Section order should reflect your experience. A recent graduate might put Education or Projects before Experience. An experienced professional usually gives relevant work experience more prominence. A career changer can bring relevant skills, projects, or training higher up and frame past achievements around transferable results.

Write accomplishment-focused experience bullets

Use bullets to show what you did and why it mattered, not just to restate a job description. One useful pattern is:

Action verb + task or problem + method + result

For example, replace “Responsible for managing social media” with “Managed a three-channel social calendar and increased monthly engagement by 28% over six months”—but only if that figure is accurate and supportable.

If you do not have exact figures, show scope with truthful details: the number of customers, projects, or people involved; the volume or frequency of work; time saved; errors reduced; or a process improved. Do not invent results. Tailor bullets to the target job by emphasizing real experience that matches its requirements, rather than inserting keywords you cannot substantiate.

Format for readability and cautious ATS use

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is software employers may use to collect or process applications. No layout can guarantee that a resume will parse correctly or lead to selection: systems and employer workflows vary. A conservative text-first design can reduce common formatting risks:

  • Use standard headings such as Experience, Education, Skills, and Certifications.
  • Keep the reading order straightforward and the text selectable.
  • Prefer one column. Be cautious with tables, sidebars, columns, text boxes, icons, and decorative graphics.
  • Do not put essential contact information or qualifications in images, logos, headers, or footers.
  • Use relevant job-description terms only when they accurately describe your experience.
  • Keep date formats, heading styles, bullets, and spacing consistent; use bold sparingly.

These are precautions, not an ATS certification. If you want a quick reading-order check, copy the exported resume’s text into a plain-text editor. Confirm that names, headings, dates, and bullets appear in a sensible order.

Keep the resume concise without making it tiny

One page is often practical for students and early-career applicants, but it is not a universal requirement. An experienced applicant may need two pages to present relevant work clearly. If your resume runs long, try these changes in order:

  1. Remove irrelevant or outdated information and low-value bullets.
  2. Shorten verbose bullets and combine repeated claims or skills.
  3. Reduce excessive paragraph or heading spacing.
  4. Use page breaks deliberately so a heading is not stranded at the bottom of a page.
  5. Tighten margins modestly if needed, then reduce font size only slightly and only if the result remains comfortable to read.

Prioritize the content before compressing the layout. Do not force a one-page resume by shrinking the type to an uncomfortable size.

Proofread and inspect the finished document

Before exporting, check the details that are easy to overlook:

  • Your name, phone number, email address, dates, and links are correct.
  • There is no leftover template text, placeholder content, or accidental blank page.
  • Spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and date formatting are consistent.
  • Bullets align properly and no important heading or entry is split awkwardly.
  • Links work, and the text is selectable and in a logical order.

Download a PDF or Word copy

In Google Docs, select File → Download, then choose a file type. Follow the employer’s instructions first:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • PDF: Often a sensible choice if no format is specified because it generally preserves the intended appearance. Inspect it after export; a PDF can still have layout or text-order problems.
  • Microsoft Word (.docx): Use this when the employer or application explicitly asks for Word or an editable document. Formatting can shift between Google Docs and Word, so inspect the downloaded file before sending it.

If a large document has trouble downloading as a PDF in Chrome, Google documents an alternative: File → Print → Destination → Save as PDF → Save. After exporting, open the actual PDF or Word file and check the first and last pages, headings, dates, bullets, links, page breaks, and spacing. If the result is wrong, simplify the affected formatting and export again.

Share a copy for feedback without giving away control

For review in Google Docs, select Share, enter the reviewer’s email, choose a permission, and send the invitation. Use Commenter when you want suggestions or Viewer when the person should only read it. Give Editor access only when collaborative editing is necessary.

For a link, check General access in the sharing panel. Restricted access is a safer default for a resume containing personal information. Avoid setting Anyone with the link to Editor. Google Drive also lets file owners manage whether viewers and commenters can download, print, or copy a file; see Google’s sharing guidance. Work or school account administrators may block external sharing or downloads. If so, use an allowed method, such as a downloaded copy sent as an attachment. Do not move employer or school content into a personal account unless policy permits it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a job application, a downloaded file is generally more dependable than a live link: it avoids access-permission problems and gives you a fixed copy to archive. Share a Google Docs link only when requested or when someone is reviewing the draft.

Common problems and fixes

  • The template gallery is missing or different: Account settings, language, organization policies, and interface differences can affect what you see. Open a blank document and build the resume with File → Page setup instead.
  • The exported layout changed: Open the downloaded file, inspect page breaks and spacing, and simplify any section that shifted. If a PDF export is problematic, try File → Print → Save as PDF in Chrome.
  • The resume gained an unexpected second page: Remove low-value content and excessive spacing before making modest margin or font adjustments. Inspect the exported file again.
  • Bullets or reading order look wrong: Replace complex columns, tables, or decorative elements with simple text and standard bullets, then re-export and check the copied text order.
  • You cannot share outside your organization: Your administrator may have restricted sharing. Download a copy if permitted and send it through an approved channel.
  • The application asks for another file type: Follow its instructions. Do not assume PDF is always preferred.

Final checklist

  • The resume is tailored to the role and contains only accurate claims.
  • The layout is readable, consistent, and in a clear reading order.
  • Contact details, dates, links, and headings are correct.
  • The downloaded file opens correctly and has been checked page by page.
  • The submitted file type matches the employer’s instructions.
  • Any review link uses the least permissive access that meets your needs.
