Mississippi Stud is a house-banked five-card poker game: you receive two private cards, use three community cards to make a five-card hand, and decide at three points whether to fold or wager 1x, 2x or 3x your ante. A standard game pays on a pair of jacks or better, pushes on pairs of 6s through 10s, and loses on lower hands. Online versions, paytables and availability vary, so check the in-game rules and confirm that the operator is licensed where you are physically located before wagering.
What is Mississippi Stud?
Mississippi Stud is a casino game based on five-card poker, not a conventional player-versus-player poker game. You do not compete against another player or try to beat a dealer’s qualifying hand. Instead, your best five-card hand—your two private cards plus three community cards—is compared with a fixed paytable.
The strategic decisions are when to fold and whether to add 1x, 2x or 3x the ante at each of three betting points. Online operators may classify the game differently in their lobbies; that label does not change the need to check its rules. It is not ordinary video poker, which typically involves selecting cards to hold or discard.
How to play Mississippi Stud online
- Check eligibility and licensing. Online casino play is governed by the jurisdiction you are physically in, not just your state of residence. Confirm the operator is licensed there and that you meet its age requirement.
- Open the game rules. Verify that the title is classic Mississippi Stud, then inspect the paytable, minimum and maximum bets, any side bets, and any published house edge or RTP. A similarly named game may use different rules.
- Set your ante. Choose the mandatory ante. If the game offers a bonus or progressive side bet, it is optional and separate from the main game.
- Deal. Press the game’s Deal control. You receive two private cards.
- Decide on 3rd Street. Fold and forfeit the ante, or wager 1x, 2x or 3x the ante. The first community card is then revealed.
- Decide on 4th Street. Fold or place another 1x, 2x or 3x ante wager. The second community card is revealed.
- Decide on 5th Street. Fold or make the final 1x, 2x or 3x ante wager. The third community card is revealed.
- Settle. Your five-card hand is evaluated against that game’s paytable. Any active side bets are settled according to their separate rules.
Online controls commonly include an ante selector, optional side-bet selector, Deal and Fold buttons, raise buttons, and a rules or paytable icon. The exact labels and layout vary by operator, device and software version. A fold normally ends the main wager and forfeits its active main-game bets; a side bet may still resolve, so check the rules rather than assume.

This is the standard schedule described by Wizard of Odds; a casino or online version may differ. A push means the qualifying wager is returned without a win or loss. Payouts described as “to 1” generally mean net winnings at that rate, with the relevant stake returned separately, but interfaces can display returns differently. Check the game’s paytable and settlement explanation before betting.
A practical strategy for the standard paytable
The following point-and-draw rules are a useful simplified strategy for the standard game. They are based on the published optimal strategy, but are not a substitute for its full decision chart. A different paytable, wild cards or bonus mechanics can change the correct decisions.

- J, Q, K or A: 2 points each
- 6 through 10: 1 point each
- 2 through 5: 0 points each
- Raise 3x with any pair.
- Raise 1x with at least two points.
- Raise 1x with suited 6-5.
- Fold other starting hands.
Examples: A-7 scores 3 points, so raise 1x; K-4 scores 2, so raise 1x; 10-8 scores 2, so raise 1x. A pair of eights gets a 3x raise. A 9-5 has only 1 point and is folded unless it is the suited 6-5 exception—which it is not.
After the first community card (3rd Street)
- Raise 3x with a made pair of 6s or higher, a royal-flush draw, or a qualifying strong straight-flush draw under the detailed chart.
- Raise 1x with another three-card flush, a low pair, at least three points, or a qualifying straight draw.
- Fold hands that do not meet one of these conditions.
After the second community card (4th Street)
- Raise 3x with a made pair of 6s or higher, four cards to a flush, or four cards to an outside straight that is 8-high or better.
- Raise 1x with other qualifying straight draws, a low pair, at least four points, or three middle cards when you have already made at least one 3x raise.
- Fold the remainder.
These condensed rules leave out card-pattern details present in the full strategy chart. In particular, do not translate them into “raise 3x whenever you have a high card.” A high card alone is not enough after the initial decision; whether a draw qualifies depends on the cards and the street. Likewise, suited cards are not automatically worth playing.
Maximum bet and one-hand exposure
At each of the three streets, the maximum raise is 3x the ante. A fully played hand at that maximum can therefore expose up to 10 ante units: 1 ante + 3 at 3rd Street + 3 at 4th Street + 3 at 5th Street.

This excludes side bets. Set a per-hand limit with the maximum in mind, not just the ante shown at the start of the hand.
Odds, house edge and strategy limits
For the standard paytable and optimal strategy, Wizard of Odds reports a 4.91% house edge and a 1.37% element of risk. The measures use different wager bases: house edge is calculated against the ante-based game structure, while element of risk accounts for the additional amounts wagered on later streets. These figures should not be assumed for a modified online game or a different paytable.
Good decisions can reduce the mathematical cost of play, but they cannot guarantee profit or remove the house edge. A losing run is possible even when you follow strategy. Avoid raising simply because you have already bet on earlier streets; each decision should be based on the cards, the remaining draw and the rules in front of you.

Side bets and progressives
Some versions offer separate wagers such as a 3 Card Bonus based on the community cards, a progressive tied to the final hand, a 5 Card Hand Bonus, a 6 Card Bonus using additional cards, or an envy bonus in some live games. Availability and terms vary. Pennsylvania regulations, for example, authorize possible additional wagers, but that does not mean every casino or online operator offers them.
- Read the side bet’s own paytable and published RTP, if provided; do not use the main-game strategy to judge it.
- Check whether it remains active and can still be settled if you fold the main hand.
- Look for whether quoted odds are “for one” or “to one,” which affects how returned stake is described.
- A large progressive prize does not by itself make the wager favorable.
Where can you play Mississippi Stud online?
Availability is both jurisdiction- and operator-specific. In the United States, legal online casino play is limited to states that authorize it, and a licensed brand may offer different game libraries in different states. Geolocation can block play when you cross a state line. Do not assume a casino is lawful or accessible just because its sportsbook operates in your area, and do not try to bypass location checks.

Those lists do not guarantee that Mississippi Stud is in a particular state’s lobby; log in only where permitted and check the local game catalog. State laws and operator participation can change.
Distinguish classic Mississippi Stud from modified titles. For example, Mississippi Showdown is presented as a related variant, not a rules reference for classic Mississippi Stud. Check whether a game uses random-number generation or live dealing, its limits and paytable, and the operator’s local licensing and responsible-gambling tools. As one operator-specific example, BetMGM’s game overview has listed a $0.10 minimum and $50 maximum, but those figures are not universal and should be verified in the live game.
If you want to learn the rules without real-money exposure, Wizard of Odds provides a free-play option and strategy reference. It is a practice resource, not a locally licensed casino account for deposits or withdrawals.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Playing as if against the dealer: Standard Mississippi Stud resolves against a paytable, not a dealer’s qualifying hand.
- Raising 3x by default: Some hands call for 1x or a fold; an extra wager is not justified by optimism alone.
- Chasing a remote draw: A possible straight or flush is not necessarily a qualifying draw for that decision point.
- Calling a push a win: A pair of 6s through 10s pushes on the standard schedule.
- Ignoring total exposure: Three 3x raises plus the ante total 10 units before side bets.
- Assuming every title is standard: Read the rules and paytable for the exact game version and jurisdiction.
- Treating a side bet as part of the main strategy: It is a separate wager with its own terms and risk.
