Verdict: The KingSpec NE-256 is a narrowly useful, low-cost M.2 2242 NVMe SSD. It can serve well as a light-duty boot or client drive when a 42 mm module is mandatory, but ServeTheHome’s testing found inconsistent performance, weak sustained writes, and results often below the advertised speeds. With no onboard DRAM or power-loss protection, it is not a good choice for write-heavy work or important data without backups.

The independent review, published March 7, 2021, scored it 6/10 overall. Treat those benchmark results as evidence about that tested sample, not a guarantee that every current NE-256 has identical components.

Quick verdict

Best for Low-cost 2242 NVMe boot drives, thin clients, office PCs and light embedded use
Avoid for Video work, virtual machines, databases, scratch disks, NAS caches and sustained large writes
Capacity and format 256GB nominal, single-sided M.2 2242 (22 × 42 mm)
Interface PCIe 3.0 x2 NVMe
Key warnings Verify the host supports 2242 NVMe; no DRAM and no power-loss protection

What the NE-256 is

The drive is an NVMe SSD in the short M.2 2242 format rather than the much more common 2280 size. ServeTheHome’s sample used a Silicon Motion SM2263XT DRAM-less controller and one Intel TLC NAND package on a single-sided board. The controller uses Host Memory Buffer (HMB), borrowing a small amount of system memory for mapping data instead of carrying dedicated DRAM.

That design reduces cost and power consumption, but it does not deliver the latency, consistency or sustained-write behavior of a better-equipped SSD. The reviewed drive also had no power-loss protection (PLP), so an unexpected shutdown during a write carries more data-integrity risk than with enterprise or PLP-equipped storage.

KingSpec’s current product page describes the broader NE-XXX 2242 family: PCIe Gen3 x2, NVMe 1.3, 3D NAND, capacities up to 1TB, and a three-year warranty. It does not establish that every currently sold 256GB unit uses the exact SM2263XT and Intel TLC combination found in the 2021 sample.

Compatibility: check this before buying

“M.2” describes a connector family, not a universal standard. Confirm all of the following in your laptop, mini-PC or embedded system manual:

  • Length: the slot has a 42 mm mounting position (2242), not only 80 mm (2280).
  • Protocol: it supports PCIe/NVMe. An M.2 SATA-only slot will not detect this drive.
  • Keying and lanes: the slot’s key and PCIe lane configuration accept a Gen3 x2 NVMe module.
  • Retention: a screw, standoff or bracket is available at the 42 mm position.
  • Clearance: the single-sided board, label and any thermal pad fit under the cover.
  • Firmware: the system can boot from a 2242 NVMe device. Some WWAN or secondary slots are restricted to SATA, USB or approved vendor modules.

A physically compatible connector is not enough: protocol, lane wiring and firmware determine whether the SSD appears and boots.

Performance: NVMe does not mean consistently fast

ServeTheHome tested the drive after filling it to 85 percent, deleting data, and leaving roughly 60 percent occupied. That matters because free-space pressure can expose weaknesses in inexpensive DRAM-less SSDs.

  • CrystalDiskMark: sequential results fell well short of the drive’s roughly 1,100/1,000 MB/s claims.
  • ATTO: write behavior was particularly weak and variable; larger workloads produced substantial swings.
  • Anvil: comparatively favorable, with some wins over larger QLC-based drives.
  • AS SSD: near the bottom of the NVMe results; larger workloads pushed writes below the SATA comparison drive in some runs.

The pattern is more important than any single chart: short or favorable tests can look acceptable, while larger transfers reveal inconsistent write performance. It is therefore misleading to market the NE-256 as a sustained 1,000 MB/s drive. Some workloads may beat SATA, but others can fall below it.

DRAM-less design and real-world implications

Dedicated DRAM stores the flash-translation mapping used to locate data quickly. The SM2263XT omits that memory and uses HMB through the host system instead. HMB keeps the drive usable and can lower cost, but it offers fewer resources than a full DRAM-equipped design. Expect more variable latency and weaker behavior as the drive fills or receives long write queues. For booting an operating system, browsing and office applications, that trade-off can be acceptable; for continuous writes, it is not.

Thermals

ServeTheHome recorded a 69°C peak under load on an open-frame test bench at approximately 22°C ambient. That is not automatically unsafe, but it is not a universal temperature promise. A fanless mini-PC or tightly packed laptop may run hotter, while a motherboard heat spreader may run cooler. The current KingSpec page claims a graphene spreader and cooling around 60°C; that is a manufacturer statement, not independent verification. Check temperatures and performance during a long write, not only at idle.

Endurance, warranty and data safety

There is a specification discrepancy. ServeTheHome reported 174 TB endurance for its 256GB sample and a three-year warranty (roughly 0.62 drive writes per day by the review’s calculation). KingSpec’s current support table lists 150 TBW for the 240/256GB NE-XXX 2242 category. The product page also shows a capacity-based 30/60/120/240/480 TB sequence without clearly mapping each value in the available text.

TBW is a warranty/endurance limit, not a prediction of the exact failure point, and neither figure replaces backups. Keep proof of purchase; KingSpec says it uses that to establish the warranty date, with the serial number used when proof is unavailable. Confirm regional return-shipping terms with the seller. Because the reviewed drive lacks PLP, avoid using it for write-critical systems exposed to frequent power interruption.

Who should buy it?

Consider it when: your device specifically requires 2242 NVMe, a 2280 module cannot fit, the price is substantially lower than better 2242 options, and the workload is light and backed up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it when: a 2280 drive fits; you need predictable sustained writes; the SSD will hold irreplaceable data; power interruptions are common; or a better 2242 drive costs about the same. The 256GB capacity is also modest by current standards.

Alternatives

  • KingSpec NXM 2242: PCIe Gen3 x4, 128GB–2TB, and published speeds up to 3,500/3,200 MB/s. Check that the host exposes the required lanes.
  • KingSpec XF 2242: PCIe 4.0 x4, 256GB–2TB, up to 5,100/4,400 MB/s. A Gen3 system will limit it, so the premium may not pay off.
  • KingSpec NT 2242 SATA: the correct protocol for SATA-only M.2 slots, with up to about 570 MB/s read depending on capacity. It will not work in an NVMe-only slot.

If your system accepts 2280, a mainstream 2280 SSD usually offers more capacity, stronger sustained performance and wider support. Compare the complete price, warranty region and seller—not just the advertised sequential number.

Final verdict

The KingSpec NE-256’s main advantage is its combination of short 2242 dimensions, NVMe compatibility and low cost. It is a reasonable compromise for a non-critical boot or light-use system when those constraints are decisive. ServeTheHome’s 6/10 result also shows why it should not be treated as a fast general-purpose NVMe drive: performance varied sharply, sustained writes were weak, and the design lacks both DRAM and PLP.

Buy only when 2242 NVMe is mandatory and the price is meaningfully lower. If a higher-quality 2242 or ordinary 2280 SSD fits for similar money, choose that instead.
