A Kubernetes Deployment is usually editable, but not every field can be changed and your account may not have permission to update it. First capture the complete error, confirm the cluster, namespace, and Deployment, then distinguish an RBAC failure, immutable-field error, invalid YAML, editor problem, controller overwrite, or rollout failure.
1. Confirm that you are editing the right Deployment
The exercise title does not identify a namespace, resource name, interface, or error message, so do not assume the cause. Start with read-only checks:

Reading an object does not grant permission to update it, and patch and update are separate RBAC verbs.

kubectl auth can-i patch deployments.apps -n NAMESPACEIf the relevant result is no, changing editors or retrying the command will not help. An administrator must grant an appropriately scoped Role or RoleBinding, or perform the change. Avoid solving a namespace-specific problem by granting cluster-admin.
3. Use the normal edit command
kubectl edit deployment NAME -n NAMESPACEkubectl edit downloads the live object, opens it in your configured editor, and submits the result to the API server when you save and exit. If it reports that the resource was not changed, the file may have been closed without saving or no effective field changed. If the editor is confusing, set a known editor for the session (for example, KUBE_EDITOR="nano" kubectl edit ...) according to your operating system.
4. Classify the exact symptom

Keep the complete API-server message. It is more useful than paraphrasing what the editor displayed.

The durable workload definition is the Deployment’s Pod template, spec.template. Typical changes include:
- Container image
- Environment variables
- Commands and arguments
- Resource requests and limits
- Pod labels and annotations
- Scheduling fields, subject to policy and cluster capacity
- Replica count (scaling changes capacity rather than creating a new template revision)
For example:

value: productionChanging the Pod template normally creates or updates a ReplicaSet and starts a rollout. The number of available Pods and timing depend on the Deployment strategy, readiness checks, and availability settings; not every metadata or replica change creates a new template revision. 6. Do not edit an individual Pod as a permanent fix
Pods produced by a Deployment are disposable. A direct Pod edit may be rejected for immutable fields or may disappear when the ReplicaSet replaces the Pod. Change the Deployment’s template instead:

-p '{"spec":{"template":{"spec":{"containers":[{"name":"app","image":"nginx:1.27"}]}}}}'The container name must match an existing container. A declarative manifest is generally easier to review and reproduce than an interactive edit.

7. Understand the immutable-selector error
spec.selector tells the Deployment which Pods it owns. It must match the labels in spec.template.metadata.labels. Changing it after creation could make the controller adopt unrelated Pods or abandon Pods it previously managed, so an update such as this is commonly rejected:

app: different-nameDo not repeatedly retry the same edit, and do not delete a live production Deployment as the first response. In a disposable training namespace, deletion and recreation may be acceptable if the exercise explicitly calls for it. In production, create a replacement Deployment with a deliberate new selector, verify its Pods, switch the Service or other traffic mechanism carefully, and remove the old object only after ownership and availability are confirmed. This is a migration, not an ordinary in-place edit.
8. Recover from rejected YAML safely
For a controlled change, export the object, edit only the intended fields, validate on the server, and then apply:
kubectl get deployment NAME -n NAMESPACE -o yaml > deployment.yaml
kubectl apply --dry-run=server -f deployment.yaml
kubectl apply -f deployment.yamlExported live YAML contains server-managed data such as metadata.resourceVersion, uid, creation timestamps, status, managed fields, and controller annotations. Do not blindly treat the complete live object as a clean source manifest, and remember that an object may change between export and apply. A dry run can expose schema or admission errors before a real update, but it cannot make an immutable selector mutable.
9. Verify the rollout separately from the edit
A successful API update does not prove that the application is healthy.

kubectl get events -n NAMESPACE --sort-by=.lastTimestampFor a failing Pod, also run kubectl describe pod POD_NAME -n NAMESPACE. Common causes include a nonexistent image tag, missing pull credentials, failed readiness probes, absent Secrets or ConfigMaps, unschedulable resource requests, node selectors or taints that match no node, a crashing process, security-policy rejection, or insufficient service-account permissions.
If the previous revision was healthy and the new one is not, rollback can restore service:
kubectl rollout undo deployment/NAME -n NAMESPACE
kubectl rollout status deployment/NAME -n NAMESPACERollback is recovery, not diagnosis; investigate why the revision failed before trying again.
10. Check whether another system owns the source of truth
kubectl get deployment NAME -n NAMESPACE -o yamlLook for Helm annotations such as meta.helm.sh/*, Flux or Argo CD labels, operator-specific metadata, ownerReferences, and managedFields identifying another field manager. Admission policies such as Pod Security Admission, Gatekeeper, Kyverno, quotas, limit ranges, or custom webhooks can also reject or mutate an update.

- Helm: change chart values or templates, then perform the appropriate Helm upgrade.
- GitOps: update the repository manifest and let reconciliation apply it.
- Operator: edit the custom resource that generates the Deployment.
- Admission or platform mutation: identify the policy or mutating component before compensating for it.
A manual edit that succeeds and then reverts is evidence that you changed a generated object rather than its source of truth. Google Kubernetes Engine documentation also illustrates exporting or editing a running Deployment when platform-added settings must be changed: GKE workload editing guidance.
11. A compact exercise workflow
- Run
kubectl config current-contextand identify the namespace. - Locate the object with
kubectl get deployments -A. - Capture the full error from
kubectl edit deployment NAME -n NAMESPACE. - Run
kubectl auth can-iforget,update, andpatch. - If authorization is valid, inspect whether the requested change is in
spec.templateor an immutable field such asspec.selector. - Validate ordinary changes with a patch or manifest, preferably using
--dry-run=server. - Watch
kubectl rollout statusand inspect Pods and events. - If the value reverts, identify Helm, GitOps, an operator, or an admission controller and change that system’s source of truth.
The exact expected answer for a provider’s “Exercise 5.4” cannot be inferred from the title alone. The required Deployment name, namespace, field, error text, and final state must come from that lab’s environment. Kubernetes behavior can also vary slightly by release, admission configuration, and managed platform. The Bottom Line
“Cannot edit a Deployment” is not one error. Confirm the target and permissions, read the exact API-server message, edit the Pod template for ordinary changes, treat selector errors as replacement-design problems, and always verify—or roll back—the resulting rollout.
