The Outlook Hotmail Connector is a legacy setup method. For current Outlook, add a @hotmail.com, @live.com, @outlook.com, or @msn.com address through the built-in Outlook.com account flow instead of searching for an old installer. That route supports Microsoft sign-in and modern authentication, and is more likely to synchronize mail, folders, contacts, and calendars correctly.
Use the steps below for your Outlook edition, then switch to the troubleshooting section if setup fails.
What the Outlook Hotmail Connector was
The Outlook Hotmail Connector was an older Microsoft add-in that connected Hotmail accounts to earlier desktop versions of Outlook. It provided more than simple message downloading by synchronizing additional account data.

Before you begin
- Confirm the complete email address and test the password by signing in at Outlook.com.
- Identify whether you use new Outlook or classic Outlook. New Outlook does not use the traditional File-tab workflow.
- Update Outlook and Windows where possible.
- Have your phone, authenticator, or other verification method available if two-step verification is enabled.
- Make sure this is a personal Microsoft account. A work or school Microsoft 365 mailbox may use a different organization-managed setup.
Add Hotmail in new Outlook for Windows
- Open new Outlook.
- Select View, then View settings.
- Choose Accounts and open Your accounts.
- Under email accounts, select Add Account.
- Enter the Hotmail or Outlook.com address and select Continue.
- Complete Microsoft sign-in and any two-step verification or browser approval.
The account should then appear in Outlook. Microsoft’s current account instructions cover Hotmail and Outlook.com addresses: Add an email account to Outlook for Windows.
Add Hotmail in classic Outlook for Windows
- Open classic Outlook.
- Select File > Add Account.
- Enter the Hotmail, Live, or Outlook.com address and select Connect.
- Enter the password if requested and complete Microsoft account verification.
- Select Finish when setup completes.
Let automatic configuration identify the account as Outlook.com. Do not choose manual Exchange or Microsoft 365 setup simply because Microsoft owns both services. Microsoft specifically advises using the Outlook.com account type when Hotmail or Live messages and custom folders do not appear: Troubleshoot Outlook email setup.
Outlook for Mac and mobile apps
Menu names vary by app version, but the principle is the same: choose the Outlook, Hotmail, or Outlook.com account type and complete Microsoft’s browser sign-in rather than configuring an old Connector.
Outlook for iOS
- Open Outlook and go to Settings.
- Select Accounts > Add Account > Email Account.
- Enter the address, select Add Account, and finish verification.
Outlook for Android
- Open Outlook and select Settings.
- Choose Accounts > Add Account > Add an email account.
- Enter the address and complete Microsoft sign-in.
iPhone or iPad Mail
- Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Add Account.
- Choose Outlook.com.
- Sign in, approve access, and choose whether to synchronize Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and Reminders.
Android Gmail
- Open Gmail, open the menu, and select Settings > Add account.
- Choose Outlook, Hotmail, and Live.
- Sign in and select the synchronization options offered by Gmail.

When IMAP is the fallback
Use IMAP only when a mail client cannot use Outlook.com sign-in and you mainly need email. Microsoft’s current personal-account settings list:

Use Microsoft’s live IMAP settings page for the matching outgoing SMTP values rather than copying an old tutorial.
IMAP is primarily an email protocol. It may synchronize mail and folders, but it does not provide the same contacts, calendar, task, and account integration as Outlook.com. POP is even more download-oriented and should be reserved for a specific need; it is not a full Connector replacement.
Troubleshooting
Outlook repeatedly asks for the password
- Confirm that the password works at Outlook.com in a browser.
- Remove the failed POP, IMAP, or duplicate account entry.
- Update Outlook.
- Add the account again through automatic Outlook.com setup and complete the browser sign-in.
- If the profile may be damaged, create a new Outlook profile and add the account there.
Repeated prompts can indicate an obsolete client or basic-authentication configuration, not a bad password. See Microsoft’s note on basic-authentication connection problems. An app password is not a universal fix for Microsoft accounts; supported modern sign-in is preferable.

Email works but contacts or calendars are missing
The account was probably added as IMAP or POP, or the client does not support Microsoft account synchronization. Re-add it as Outlook.com, or use Outlook mobile or Outlook.com in a browser. IMAP alone cannot guarantee contacts and calendar synchronization.
You cannot find the File tab
You are probably using new Outlook. Follow the View > View settings > Accounts > Your accounts path instead of classic Outlook instructions.
An old phone stopped syncing
Microsoft says devices using ActiveSync versions below 16.1 will no longer connect to its services beginning March 1, 2026. Update the operating system or mail app if an update exists, install a current Outlook app where supported, or replace unsupported software or hardware. This cutoff concerns affected ActiveSync implementations; it is not a blanket statement about every old Outlook installation. See Microsoft’s server-settings guidance.

A Connector download is missing
Do not use an unofficial archive or modified installer. The safer current replacement is built-in Outlook.com setup. If your Outlook edition is too old for modern sign-in, upgrading the app or using Outlook.com in a browser is generally more practical than forcing legacy software to authenticate.

Which option should you choose?

Adding or removing an account in Outlook is an app configuration change; it is not the same as deleting the Microsoft account or mailbox. Follow Microsoft’s account-removal prompts carefully if you are replacing an old profile.

Can I still download the Outlook Hotmail Connector?
Treat it as legacy software rather than a current requirement. Use Outlook’s built-in Outlook.com account setup and avoid unofficial download sites.
Is Hotmail the same as Outlook.com for setup?
Hotmail, Live, MSN, and Outlook.com addresses are Microsoft personal accounts and are normally added through the Outlook.com account type in current Outlook.
Can IMAP sync my Hotmail calendar?
Not reliably. IMAP is primarily for email and folders; use Outlook.com integration or a supported Outlook app for calendar and contact synchronization.

Do I need Microsoft 365 to use Hotmail?
No. You can use Outlook.com in a browser and supported Outlook apps without assuming that a Microsoft 365 subscription is required.
Will removing an Outlook account delete my Hotmail mailbox?
Removing an account from the Outlook app or profile does not by itself delete the Microsoft mailbox.
The Bottom Line
Skip the old Connector unless you are maintaining a specifically legacy environment. For current devices, add Hotmail as an Outlook.com account, use IMAP only for email-focused fallback access, and replace clients that cannot complete modern Microsoft authentication.
