KnowBe4 appointed Joel Kemmerer as its chief information officer on August 25, 2025. The external hire brought in the former N-able CIO to lead digital-transformation work, improve operational performance, support acquisition integration and help KnowBe4 deliver more value to customers.
What KnowBe4 announced
KnowBe4’s announcement, issued on August 25, 2025, named Kemmerer CIO. ChannelPro/ITPro reported the appointment on August 26. The company said his remit includes critical digital-transformation initiatives, operational excellence, team innovation and integration work related to acquisitions. Neither KnowBe4 nor the trade report disclosed compensation, a detailed project list or a transformation timetable. Read KnowBe4’s announcement.
CEO Bryan Palma characterized Kemmerer as an executive who can translate complex technology environments into usable systems and processes. Kemmerer said his priorities are to reimagine how KnowBe4 delivers customer value, embed operational excellence, empower teams to innovate and accelerate the company’s strategic vision.

KnowBe4 says Kemmerer has more than 30 years of IT leadership experience. Before joining KnowBe4, he was chief information officer at N-able. His earlier executive career included leadership positions at SolarWinds and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas McCombs School of Business and an MBA from Southern Methodist University’s Edwin L. Cox School of Business. What his role covers
KnowBe4’s current profile lists Kemmerer as CIO and says he also leads the company’s enterprise program-management and integration offices. That points to a role extending beyond conventional internal IT operations. It includes coordinating large cross-functional programs, aligning business processes and helping acquired capabilities operate within a common company structure.

The announcement does not establish that Kemmerer is KnowBe4’s chief information security officer, product chief or sole owner of cybersecurity, privacy or engineering. CIO and CISO responsibilities vary by company, so readers should not interpret this appointment as a change in KnowBe4’s security-leadership structure.

Why the appointment matters
The timing fits KnowBe4’s expansion from a primarily security-awareness-training vendor into a broader human-risk-management platform. The company’s HRM+ positioning combines awareness training and phishing simulation with email security, anti-phishing controls, real-time coaching, compliance capabilities, risk measurement and AI defense agents.
KnowBe4 said HRM+ followed its acquisition of Egress, combining KnowBe4’s training business with Egress’s AI-powered email-security technology. Kemmerer’s acquisition-integration background and his responsibility for integration offices are therefore strategically relevant. However, the CIO announcement does not say he was hired specifically to integrate Egress, announce a particular acquisition or deliver a named systems replacement. That connection is informed analysis, not a confirmed project mandate. KnowBe4’s HRM+ announcement provides the company’s product context.
KnowBe4’s platform direction after the appointment
Subsequent first-party announcements show the platform continuing toward protection of both human users and AI agents. KnowBe4 has described AIDA, or Artificial Intelligence Defense Agents, for combating AI-generated phishing and measuring human cyber risk. Later releases introduced Agent Risk Manager and a Custom SAPA Agent, with capabilities aimed at issues such as social engineering, prompt injection and shadow AI.
Those releases occurred after the August 2025 appointment and should not be read as items Kemmerer was specifically hired to launch. They do show why enterprise architecture, integration and operating-model discipline have become more important as KnowBe4 broadens its portfolio. The company currently says it serves more than 70,000 organizations worldwide; that is a KnowBe4-reported figure rather than an independently audited count.
Relevant later announcements include AIDA, Agent Risk Manager, the Custom SAPA Agent and a broader AI-agent suite update.

- Evidence of new enterprise-system, data or operating-model initiatives.
- Progress integrating Egress products and other acquired capabilities, without assuming a published timetable.
- Changes to customer onboarding, service delivery and cross-product integration.
- Expansion of HRM+ features and AI-agent controls.
- Future statements from Kemmerer or KnowBe4 that attach measurable outcomes to “operational excellence” or transformation.
For MSPs, CIOs and security buyers, the practical question is whether KnowBe4’s wider platform becomes easier to deploy and administer across training, email security, coaching and risk analytics. The appointment alone does not prove product superiority, a pricing change or a shift in licensing and support.
Bottom line
Joel Kemmerer’s appointment is best understood as an operational and transformation hire. KnowBe4 is managing a broader product and organizational footprint, and it has placed an executive with N-able, SolarWinds and AMD experience over enterprise programs and integration as the company pursues human-risk management. The confirmed mandate is broad; the specific systems, acquisitions and performance targets remain undisclosed.
