Yes, the headline refers to a real experimental dating website: Browser Dating, created by Belgian artist and developer Dries Depoorter. Rather than asking users to build a conventional profile around photos and prompts, it turns recent search behavior into an AI-generated browsing-personality profile and uses that to suggest matches. The unusual idea is real; the matching method is not shown to predict relationship success, and handing over search data carries serious privacy risks.
What is Browser Dating?
Browser Dating is a website, not necessarily a conventional iOS or Android dating app. It was created by Dries Depoorter, whose art and technology projects have explored surveillance, social media, AI, and privacy. The premise is deliberately unsettling: searches people make when they are not composing a polished dating profile might offer a different source of conversation starters or apparent common interests.
That does not mean search history is a reliable measure of someone’s “real” personality. Searches can be made for work, school, research, a friend, a passing worry, or simple curiosity. Similar search behavior is not proof of shared values, romantic compatibility, or trustworthiness.

In coverage published in June 2025, WIRED described an onboarding process that required a Chrome or Firefox extension to export browsing data. Users supplied basic profile details, including age, location, gender, and sexual preference, and the site reportedly used up to 5,000 recent searches to generate an AI-based browsing-personality profile.

- Create a basic profile. The service asked for personal and dating-preference details.
- Install a browser extension. The extension was used to export history for submission to the service.
- Submit recent searches. Reporting described a limit of 5,000 searches, or the available history if there were fewer. Incognito-mode activity was not included.
- Receive a generated profile and matches. The service compared browsing-related signals to suggest people, with geographic filtering reportedly available.
One important distinction: coverage sometimes uses “browser history,” “search history,” and “internet history” interchangeably. They are not necessarily the same thing. A search query is not the same as every URL visited, cookies, activity saved to a Google or Microsoft account, or private-mode activity. The detailed launch reporting described recent searches collected through an extension; it does not establish that Browser Dating received every record of everything a person did online.
What does a match see?
WIRED reported that matches were shown summaries or “fun facts” about shared interests and behavior—for example, an unusual topic both people searched for or a time of day when they tended to be active—rather than each other’s complete raw search histories. That is a meaningful distinction, but summaries can still reveal or imply highly personal information.
A search record may expose health concerns, sexuality, religion or politics, financial stress, relationship problems, work matters, or clues about where someone lives. It may also contain searches made on behalf of another person, such as a child, partner, patient, client, or colleague. Those people did not necessarily agree to have their information processed for dating matches.

Why the idea appeals—and why it can mislead
Conventional dating profiles are curated: people choose pictures, prompts, and interests they want others to see. Browser Dating’s pitch is that searches may surface less polished, more unexpected common ground. An unusual shared curiosity could give two people a conversation opener that would never appear in a standard profile.
But uncurated data is not automatically authentic data. Search histories can be incomplete, shared across devices, dominated by work, or shaped by temporary circumstances. An AI-generated summary can misread the context, and people can deliberately generate searches to influence the resulting profile. More data might supply more matching signals, but it also increases the amount of sensitive material a user is entrusting to the service.
The privacy question is bigger than embarrassment
The core concern is not just that an awkward search could be shown to a date. It is that the service’s reported onboarding asked users to grant an extension access to browsing history and transfer a highly revealing dataset into an experimental dating product. Browser extensions can be powerful because they may need broad permissions to do their job; users should understand exactly what a particular extension can access before installing it.

Depoorter told WIRED that processing was local and the data was not exposed to another company. WIRED also reported that Firebase was used to store and manage data. Futurism raised questions about what those assurances meant in practice and its reporter stopped before downloading the extension. These are attributed claims and reported concerns, not proof of a data breach, sale, or malicious behavior. The available reporting does not establish a complete, independently audited security model.
“Processed locally” or “not exposed to the internet” would not, by itself, answer all the questions a cautious user should ask: what the extension collects, what is transmitted, how information is encrypted, who can access it, how long it is kept, whether backups and derived AI profiles are deleted, and what happens if an account or extension is compromised. Firebase use alone is not evidence of a security failure, but storage infrastructure does not substitute for clear retention and deletion terms.
What to check before considering it
- Review the current extension permissions and publisher. Do not install an extension simply because a dating site requests it. Confirm what it can read and whether its scope matches the stated purpose.
- Read the privacy and retention terms. Look for what is collected, where it is processed, who can access it, whether it is shared, and how to request deletion.
- Ask what deletion actually removes. A profile deletion may not necessarily remove logs, backups, analytics, or generated personality profiles unless the policy says so.
- Do not submit mixed or sensitive history. Shared family or workplace browsers, synced devices, and accounts used by multiple people can include someone else’s searches. Histories may expose medical, legal, financial, sexual, location, or confidential work information.
- Do not assume a separate browser makes it safe. A clean profile may reduce the data exposed, but it does not establish that the service’s collection, security, or deletion practices are acceptable.
- Keep normal dating safeguards. A match based on shared searches is still a stranger. Verify identity as appropriate, do not send money, meet in a public place, and tell someone where you are going.
These are prudent checks for any service requesting unusually intimate data, not a claim that Browser Dating violated a particular law. The service’s current availability, extension permissions, privacy controls, deletion process, and terms should be verified directly before anyone signs up.

Art experiment or serious dating service?
The evidence supports both descriptions, with important limits. Browser Dating was reported as a functioning experimental dating website, and Depoorter told WIRED it was legitimate rather than merely a gimmick. At the same time, its creator is an artist and developer, its premise is designed to provoke, and the reporting does not establish the scale or long-term viability of a mature dating business. Artistic intent can explain the concept; it cannot replace technical documentation or independent security assurance.
Nor is there evidence in the cited reporting that its matching approach is scientifically validated. It is more accurate to call it an experimental way to generate matches from browsing behavior than a proven compatibility system.

WIRED reported fewer than 1,000 sign-ups in Browser Dating’s first week and described five free matches followed by a one-time €9 payment for unlimited matches. Those are June 2025 launch-era figures, not verified current user numbers or pricing. A small or geographically dispersed pool can also make a matching service less useful, whatever signal its algorithm uses.

WIRED also reported early complaints about delayed email verification and difficulty deleting profiles; Depoorter said those issues had been fixed. That is a report about launch-period problems and an attributed resolution, not confirmation of the site’s current account or deletion performance.
Who might find it appealing?
The concept may interest people drawn to experimental technology, digital art, or the possibility of meeting someone through an unusual shared curiosity. It is a poor fit for anyone who is privacy-conscious, uses a shared or work browser, has sensitive searches in their history, or wants the reassurance of an established service’s mature safety and moderation systems. Conventional dating products use different profile and matching models, but no alternative should be assumed universally safer without reviewing its own policies.
Browser Dating’s central trade-off is unusually clear: it offers the possibility of less curated introductions in exchange for access to unusually intimate behavioral data. Whether that trade is worthwhile depends less on how funny or “deranged” the concept sounds than on what data the service currently collects, how it protects it, and whether the user is comfortable handing it over.
