For most people who already own a Samsung Galaxy tablet, Samsung Notes is the better default: it is included with compatible Galaxy devices, works closely with the S Pen, syncs with other Galaxy devices, and handles PDFs and common export formats. Choose Goodnotes if you want a notebook- and planner-focused workflow or need an app available on Android, Windows, Web, and Apple devices—but verify the cross-platform sync you need before moving important notes.
Neither app is a universal winner. Samsung Notes is strongest inside Samsung’s ecosystem; Goodnotes offers a more deliberate digital-notebook experience, but its Android, Windows, and Web editions do not match the full iPad feature set.

Feature availability can vary by device, software version, region, and plan. Treat platform support as more than a yes-or-no checkbox: confirm that the app supports the features and sync direction your own workflow needs.

Samsung Notes is a Galaxy productivity app, not just a handwriting pad. It combines typed notes, handwriting and drawing, S Pen tools, voice recordings linked to notes, folders and subfolders, PDF annotation, handwriting conversion, sharing, and export. Samsung also documents integration with Microsoft OneNote and selected Galaxy AI features.

Goodnotes is centered more explicitly on notebooks and documents: you can build a library of notebooks, text documents, and imported files, then use pages, templates, handwriting, typing, audio, sharing, and collaboration according to the platform and plan. That structure can suit students who keep a separate notebook for each course, planner users, and people who spend much of their time marking up workbooks.
Do not judge the Android version of Goodnotes by its iPad reputation alone. Goodnotes says the Android, Windows, and Web versions do not offer the full range of features available on iPad. In particular, some customization options and handwriting capabilities differ by platform.
Handwriting and S Pen use
Samsung Notes has the most direct hardware fit on a Galaxy Tab with S Pen support. Samsung documents writing with the S Pen, adjusting handwriting, and converting handwriting to text; some cleanup and related functions depend on the device and software. This is an ecosystem advantage, not proof that every user will prefer its writing feel. Screen protectors, tablet model, app version, and personal pen settings all affect the experience.

If writing feel is the deciding factor, try both apps on your actual tablet and S Pen before committing to a long-term notebook workflow.
For either app, test a representative page rather than relying on a promotional feature list: write quickly and slowly, erase and lasso-select, use handwriting conversion if you need it, and check how annotations behave on the PDFs you actually use. Samsung notes that some tools depend on device and software support; Goodnotes’ platform differences make an Android trial particularly worthwhile.

PDFs: studying, marking up, and exporting
Both apps can work with PDFs, but the useful distinction is the workflow. Samsung Notes offers a clear route to bring a document into a note, annotate it, and save the result. Samsung says the imported PDF becomes a copy in Samsung Notes; the original file is not changed. Its documented PDF export path is More options → Save as file → PDF file, then choose a folder and save.
Samsung documents export or sharing in Samsung Notes, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, image, and text formats. That makes it a practical choice if you need to send marked-up work beyond the app. Do not assume every export preserves handwriting as editable Office content or retains every PDF feature; inspect the exported result before relying on it for a submission or archive.

Goodnotes’ free plan has meaningful limits, however: its pricing page lists up to three notebooks, 100 MB of storage, limited sharing, and a 5 MB import limit. The Android page also warns about watermarks on exported documents, while the pricing page describes watermark-free exports in paid plans. Check the current app and plan details before building a large archive.
For a reliable PDF workflow, test one typical document first. Check whether it is scanned or text-based, whether its page orientation matches the note, whether search works as expected, and whether exported annotations look right in another PDF viewer. Samsung specifically warns that note and PDF orientations need to match: a landscape note cannot accept a portrait-oriented PDF or page, and vice versa. Large files, embedded fonts, links, bookmarks, and form fields are worth checking in the exact documents you use.
Syncing across Galaxy, Windows, and Apple devices
Samsung Notes: best within the Galaxy household
Samsung Cloud can sync Samsung Notes among Galaxy devices and compatible Samsung PCs when you use a Samsung account and turn on synchronization. Samsung’s PC support is tied to compatible Samsung computers; do not interpret it as an equally capable, vendor-neutral Windows app for every PC.

Samsung also supports a Microsoft OneNote feed integration, but it is not a substitute for editing Samsung Notes inside OneNote. Samsung says notes appear in the feed for viewing and cannot be edited or removed there; changes must be made in Samsung Notes. If your work depends on full OneNote editing, use OneNote directly or confirm that the feed meets your needs.
Goodnotes: test the direction of sync you need
Goodnotes is available on Android, Windows, and Web as well as Apple platforms, and it describes Goodnotes Cloud as a way to sync notebooks across platforms. There is an important qualification: Goodnotes’ current support pages describe iOS-to-Android/Windows/Web synchronization inconsistently. One support page says iOS notebooks can be accessed on those platforms when Goodnotes Cloud is enabled; another says Android, Windows, and Web notes can sync to iOS but iOS notes cannot yet sync back to Android, Windows, or Web.
That uncertainty matters most if you already have years of notes on an iPad and expect to edit the same notebooks on a Galaxy Tab. Before paying or migrating, make a disposable notebook and test the exact direction of travel:
- Create a test notebook on the Galaxy tablet and sign in to the same Goodnotes account on Windows or the Web. Confirm that it appears and that edits return to the tablet.
- If you also use an iPhone or iPad, create or edit a separate test notebook there. Confirm whether those changes show up on the Samsung device.
- Export important existing work as PDFs before moving it, and keep those exports somewhere outside the app.
A notebook appearing on another device is not the same as having a full independent backup. Goodnotes says manual backup is not currently available for Android, Windows, and Web, and points users to PDF export as a backup route. Its offline editing support also has restrictions: some actions, including export and certain bookmark, favorite, and custom-element operations, are unavailable while offline.
Folders, notebooks, templates, and search
Samsung Notes suits users who want a straightforward filing system for a mixture of everyday notes: meeting notes, reminders, images, recordings, handwriting, and documents. Samsung supports folders and subfolders, so you can organize work without treating every note as a carefully designed digital page.

Goodnotes is the stronger candidate if you want a deliberate notebook library: separate notebooks for courses or projects, planner-style pages, reusable paper layouts, and imported workbooks. But template capabilities vary by platform. Goodnotes says Android, Windows, and Web cannot generate custom-size templates or custom themes, though those platforms can use dynamic-template notebooks created on iOS. An iPad user’s custom setup may therefore not translate into an equivalent creation workflow on a Galaxy Tab.
Audio, transcription, and AI
Samsung Notes supports voice recording alongside note-taking, letting you follow notes during playback. Goodnotes lists audio recording and transcription among its plan features; the pricing page lists 20 minutes of recording on Free and unlimited recording on Essential and higher tiers. Platform, plan, and transcription availability matter, so check the feature in the version you intend to use rather than assuming a capability shown on a general plan page is available everywhere.
Samsung’s Galaxy AI and Note Assist features can format, summarize, spell-check, or help convert handwriting on supported devices. Samsung says availability depends on the model and software, and some AI functions require a Samsung account, internet connection, supported language, and a minimum amount of text—Samsung documents requirements in the range of 2,000 to 4,000 characters for some features. Do not treat “Galaxy AI” as a promise that every Samsung Notes user has every tool.
Goodnotes also advertises AI capabilities, but availability can vary by plan and platform, and an AI Pass may be separate from a core subscription. If privacy, transcription language, or offline operation is important, review the relevant app and plan details before recording sensitive meetings or lectures.

Price and value
Samsung presents Samsung Notes as an included Galaxy app, rather than a separate notes subscription. For someone who already owns a compatible Galaxy device, that makes it an easy first choice. It is not accurate to call it a free, equally supported app for every Android device: its strongest experience is tied to Samsung hardware.

Goodnotes’ official pricing page, checked August 18, 2026, listed Free at $0, Essential at $11.99 per year, Pro at $35.99 per year, Teams at $120 per seat per year, and an AI Pass at $9.99 per month. It showed seven-day trials for Essential and Pro and a 30-day Teams trial. Prices, currency, taxes, included features, and promotions can change, so confirm the checkout screen for your region. The Free plan’s three-notebook and 100 MB limits may be enough for evaluation, but can be restrictive for a student with several courses.
Goodnotes also advertises a Samsung promotion for eligible Galaxy Tab S9, S10, and S11 series devices and selected Galaxy Book 4, 5, and 6 models: one free year of Essential followed by 20% off the next term. Eligibility depends on model, region, and redemption rules; verify the offer at Goodnotes’ Samsung promotion page before counting it into your budget.
Which app should you choose?
- You own a Galaxy Tab and phone: Start with Samsung Notes. It combines quick phone capture, S Pen note-taking, and Samsung device sync without a separate app subscription.
- You annotate lecture PDFs: Samsung Notes is usually the better-value starting point, especially if you want straightforward import and export. Choose Goodnotes if its notebook organization, planner layouts, or study-page system is specifically what you want.
- You need iPad, Android, and Windows continuity: Goodnotes is the more relevant cross-platform option in this comparison, but test sync in both directions with noncritical notes before switching. Its platform feature sets are not identical.
- You rely on Galaxy Book and Samsung Cloud: Samsung Notes is the natural fit. Remember that OneNote feed access is view-oriented, not full editing in OneNote.
- You need Word or PowerPoint exports: Samsung Notes has the clearer documented advantage, with export options for both formats in addition to PDF, image, and text.
- You want a polished planner or template-centered notebook system: Goodnotes is worth trying, while keeping Android’s template and feature limitations in mind.
- You want free everyday notes: Samsung Notes is preferable if you already have compatible Galaxy hardware. Goodnotes Free has explicit notebook, storage, import, and sharing limits.
- You are moving from iPad to a Galaxy tablet: Do not assume your Goodnotes notebooks will sync and behave as expected. Test the actual transfer and edit path, and preserve PDF exports.
- You take fast notes on a Samsung phone: Samsung Notes is the better fit for capture within the Galaxy ecosystem; Goodnotes is more compelling when you need structured notebooks across devices.
Using both can make sense
You do not have to force every task into one app. Use Samsung Notes for quick phone notes, voice-linked meeting notes, and short S Pen captures; keep Goodnotes for course notebooks, planner pages, or a particular imported PDF project if its organization works better for you. The trade-off is duplication: decide which app owns the authoritative copy of each notebook, and export important finished work so it remains accessible if you later change platforms.

- Export first. Save important notes and annotated documents as PDFs or another suitable format, and keep copies outside the note app.
- Test a small sample. Include handwriting, a PDF, any audio, and a long notebook—not just a blank page.
- Verify sync both ways. Check each device and direction you need, especially between iOS and Android Goodnotes.
- Inspect exports. Open exported files in another app and confirm pages, handwriting, and required content are intact.
- Keep the old app for now. Do not delete or reset your old library until you have verified access and recovery on the new setup.
For most Galaxy Tab owners, Samsung Notes is the sensible default: it is closely integrated with the hardware, broad enough for handwriting and PDF work, and costs no separate subscription. Goodnotes is the better choice when notebook structure, planners, or a cross-platform workflow solves a real need—but its Android feature set and sync behavior deserve a practical trial before you trust it with your only copy.
