Windows does not normally open Xbox 360 storage like a regular USB drive. To browse an Xbox 360 hard drive, memory unit, or console-formatted USB device, connect it with hardware that fits the device and use software that understands the console’s FATX storage format. If Windows asks to initialize, format, or repair the device, choose Cancel.
If you mean playing photos, music, or videos stored on your PC through an Xbox 360, that is a different task: share the media over your home network. It streams from the PC to the console; it does not make Xbox storage visible in Windows.
First, identify where the files are

What you need to connect an Xbox 360 drive
- A connection that matches the storage. A bare 2.5-inch SATA drive generally needs a SATA-to-USB adapter or a desktop PC’s SATA data and power connections. A drive still inside an Xbox enclosure may need to be removed or connected with a model-compatible enclosure or adapter.
- FATX-compatible software. FATXplorer documents support for Xbox 360 retail hard drives, memory units, USB devices, and FATX partitions. Its information page describes partition browsing, content viewing, extraction, mounting, backup, and recovery features.
- A separate destination drive for the files you extract. For valuable data, keep the original Xbox storage unchanged and make a full-device backup first.
Xbox 360 hardware varies. Original (“fat”) models generally have a removable hard drive in an external shell, while Xbox 360 S and E models use a removable drive/enclosure arrangement. Do not assume one cable or replacement enclosure fits every model; identify the actual drive and casing before buying an adapter.

- Turn off the Xbox 360 completely. Remove the hard drive according to the console or enclosure design. If required, open the shell carefully to access the drive.
- Connect the drive to the PC. Use a suitable SATA-to-USB adapter with adequate power, or connect it directly to desktop SATA data and power. A USB adapter that cannot supply stable power may detect the drive inconsistently or not at all.
- Cancel Windows prompts. If Windows says the disk must be initialized, formatted, or repaired, click Cancel. Do not use Disk Management to initialize it or run Windows repair tools.
- Open FATXplorer and select the connected Xbox 360 storage device. Follow the application’s current prompts if it requires a driver installation or reboot for Windows integration.
- Browse the relevant partition or Content view. Content view can make Xbox items easier to identify than cryptic folder names; partition browsing is useful when you need to inspect the storage structure.
- Extract or export the files to a normal folder on a different Windows drive. Verify that the files you need are present before changing or disconnecting the Xbox storage.
- Unmount the device in the software before ejecting it or unplugging it.
FATX is not the same as FAT32, and File Explorer alone does not normally interpret Xbox 360 storage. FATXplorer’s documentation says its Windows Integration feature can mount FATX partitions as virtual disks, while Content View presents Xbox content with associated information. Do not run Windows disk checkers, defragmenters, or similar utilities on a FATXplorer-mounted partition; the software specifically warns against them.

View an Xbox-formatted USB drive or memory unit
Connect the device to the PC and first determine how it was used. An Xbox 360 can move content from its hard drive to compatible USB mass storage through the console, but that does not mean Windows will display the resulting Xbox content as ordinary folders. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 documentation describes moving content to USB storage from the console.
If Windows asks to format the device, cancel and inspect it with FATX-aware software. On the other hand, a USB drive containing ordinary files on a Windows-readable filesystem such as FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS may open normally in File Explorer. That is useful for transferring unprotected media, but it does not mean the device contains readable Xbox saves, profiles, or other console content. What matters is how the console configured the storage and where the files reside.
Back up before trying to recover or modify saves
If the drive contains saves or other irreplaceable data, treat the original as read-only:
- Stop using the storage device and do not write anything to it.
- Create a full device backup or image before experimenting. FATXplorer documents a Device Backup/Restore feature for cases such as data loss or hardware failure.
- When possible, work from the backup or image rather than the original.
- Extract recovered files to a separate PC drive and verify the backup before reconnecting the Xbox storage.
Deleted-file recovery is not guaranteed. Recovery depends on whether the deleted data’s sectors have been overwritten, and a physically failing drive can deteriorate with repeated attempts. If the drive clicks, repeatedly disconnects, or disappears during access and the contents matter, stop reconnecting it and consider professional data recovery.
Also distinguish extracting a save from making it usable elsewhere. Xbox saves, profiles, downloadable content, title updates, and cache data can use console-specific containers and account, profile, title, or licensing metadata. A copied file may not work with another profile or console. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules also make clear that Xbox 360 content is not automatically a Windows game license.

Why the Xbox 360 transfer cable is not the PC solution
The official Xbox 360 hard-drive transfer cable is intended for transferring content between Xbox 360 hard drives through an Xbox 360 console, not for general browsing on a computer. Microsoft’s transfer-cable documentation warns that it is not intended for use with a PC or other USB host. For PC access, use a connection appropriate to the actual drive and FATX-aware software instead.
If you meant playing PC media on an Xbox 360
This is the opposite direction: the Xbox plays media shared by the PC over your local network. It does not expose the Xbox’s internal drive to Windows.

- On the PC, enable media sharing or streaming and make sure the folders containing the media are included in the shared library or configuration. Windows menus vary by version.
- On the Xbox 360, open the relevant Video Library, Music Library, or Picture Library and select the PC or media server.
Microsoft describes this network playback workflow for an Xbox 360 accessing music, photos, and videos from a Windows server on the same network in its media-sharing guidance. The exact Windows Media Player controls differ by Windows release. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so it should be treated as a legacy installation rather than the current supported Windows example; Microsoft’s network-sharing instructions cover Windows file sharing. On Windows 11 N editions, media components may be absent; Microsoft says the Media Feature Pack enables Windows Media Player Legacy, media streaming, and related functionality.
Not every PC video will play on an Xbox 360. Playback depends on the console’s supported container, codec, resolution, and any DRM restrictions. A file opening in Windows Media Player does not establish that the console can play it; see Microsoft’s Windows Media Player file-type list for Windows support, not as a guarantee of Xbox compatibility.

Windows says the drive must be formatted
Choose Cancel; do not initialize, format, or repair the disk. Open it with FATX-aware software. If the software cannot see it, check the adapter, power, and physical connection before concluding the data is missing.

The PC detects the drive, but FATXplorer does not
Check that the adapter supplies adequate power, try a different SATA-to-USB bridge or direct PC port, and confirm the drive is not still inside an enclosure that prevents the intended connection. If the tool required a driver and reboot for mounting, complete that setup. A failing device or an unfamiliar partition layout may also be involved; avoid writes while diagnosing it.
The drive does not appear in Windows at all
Confirm that the adapter has both the right data connection and sufficient power. Try a direct USB port rather than an unpowered hub, and test the adapter with a known-good 2.5-inch SATA drive if available. If the Xbox drive is failing and its files are important, do not repeatedly reconnect it.
The filenames look meaningless
That can be normal for Xbox content. Use the software’s content view and metadata or title-identification features instead of assuming folder names will be descriptive.
A copied save or downloaded item does not work
Copying makes a backup; it does not necessarily remove account, profile, console, title, or license restrictions. Do not assume an extracted item will work on another console or in a Windows game.
I only want to use the old drive as a normal Windows disk
Formatting may make storage usable by Windows, but it can erase Xbox partitions and data. First extract and verify anything you want to keep. Only format after you are certain the Xbox content is no longer needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Windows read an Xbox 360 hard drive directly?
Not normally as a standard browsable drive. Connect it with compatible hardware and use FATX-aware software; cancel any Windows request to format or initialize it.
Can I use the Xbox 360 transfer cable with my PC?
