Yes—if you have a personal Gmail account, its password is normally your Google Account password. Gmail does not have a separate password. The same Google Account sign-in is used for services such as Drive, YouTube, Photos, Calendar, and Google Play. Changing it is an account-wide security change, not just a Gmail change. How Gmail and your Google Account are related
Your Google Account is the identity and sign-in you use across Google services. Gmail is one service you can use with that account; your Gmail address is commonly the account’s sign-in name. In ordinary personal use, you do not set one password for Gmail and another for Drive or YouTube. Google uses the account password across its connected services. Google describes the relationship between Gmail and a Google Account.
That distinction matters because a Google Account does not always include Gmail. You can create a Google Account using an existing address from another email provider or an organization. Such an account has a Google Account password, but it may not have a Gmail inbox. Learn about using a non-Gmail address with a Google Account.
What changes when you change your Gmail password?
Changing the password changes the password for the Google Account. You will use the new one for Gmail and other Google services signed in through that account. Google says a password change or reset signs you out in most places, though some devices used for identity verification, certain authorized third-party apps, and some connected home devices may be exceptions. An app or device may not ask you to sign in again until it next needs fresh authentication, so a still-open Gmail session does not mean Gmail has a different password. Change your password if you can still sign in
- Open your Google Account security settings.
- Select Security & sign-in.
- Under How you sign in to Google, select Password.
- Sign in again if prompted, enter a new password, then select Change Password.
The precise labels or layout can vary by language, device, account type, or interface update. Look for the Password setting in your Google Account’s security area. Confirm the account email or profile before changing anything if you are signed in to more than one account.
Reset a forgotten password
If you cannot sign in, use Google Account recovery—there is no separate Gmail password-reset system.

- Enter the Gmail address or other email used for the Google Account, then follow the recovery prompts.
- Answer the questions as accurately as you can. Google may ask different questions on different attempts.
- Try from a device, browser, and location you normally use. If asked, enter the most recent previous password you remember.
- Check the recovery phone or email offered, including the spam or junk folder for a message.
- If Google verifies that you own the account, follow the prompts to set a new password.
Recovery is not guaranteed; it depends on Google being able to verify account ownership. Avoid careless repeated guesses. Never give a password or verification code to someone claiming to be Google support or send one by email, phone, or message. Enter credentials and codes only on accounts.google.com. Work or school accounts
A work or school address may be a Google Workspace account managed by an organization. It generally provides one organizational sign-in for Gmail and other services enabled by the administrator, but the organization can control password changes, recovery options, security requirements, and available products. If the Password option is missing, recovery is restricted, or a change is blocked, contact your organization’s administrator. Google explains managed work and school accounts.

Multiple Google Accounts
Each Google Account has its own password. A personal Gmail account and a separate work account—or two Gmail addresses belonging to separate accounts—can have different passwords. Check the profile picture and account email before changing a password; changing one account does not change another.
2-Step Verification and passkeys
2-Step Verification does not create a second Gmail password. It adds another sign-in check, such as a Google prompt, verification code, security key, or backup code. A mail app says the password is wrong
An error in a third-party mail app does not always mean the Google Account password is wrong. The app may be signed in to a different account, have an expired session, or use an outdated username-and-password sign-in method. When available, use the app’s Sign in with Google option or its current secure authentication flow; do not enter your Google password into an unfamiliar app or website. Google Workspace accounts have not supported less-secure apps that use only a username and password since January 2025, so such an app can fail even when the password is correct. If a familiar app stopped working after you changed the password, follow its supported sign-in flow and sign in again if prompted. For an organization-managed account, ask the administrator whether the app or authentication method is allowed. Do not assume that changing the password again will fix an authentication-policy problem.

If someone else may have changed or learned your password
If you suspect unauthorized access, recover the account if needed and change its Google Account password as soon as you can. Then:
- Review recent security activity and signed-in devices; investigate and remove anything you do not recognize.
- Remove suspicious third-party access and check that your recovery phone numbers and email addresses are still yours.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification if it is available to you.
- Change the password anywhere else you reused it. A Google password change does not change a reused password on another service.
Google’s compromised-account checklist and suspicious-activity guidance provide account-specific steps. Use a unique password for your Google Account to reduce the risk that a breach elsewhere will expose it.
