NASA’s ESCAPADE mission has shared its first spacecraft “selfies”: visible-light and infrared images of part of a solar panel, captured eight days after launch. The pictures are an early camera checkout—not images of Mars. One spacecraft returned a recognizable view of its panel; the other’s first photos were black because its camera was pointed into deep space.

What ESCAPADE’s first images show

On November 21, 2025, one of the twin ESCAPADE spacecraft used its Visible and Infrared Observation System, or VISIONS, to photograph part of its own solar-panel array. NASA released the images on November 24, describing them as the spacecraft’s first “selfies.” NASA’s account of the first images says the camera system was provided by Northern Arizona University.

The visible-light frame shows a section of the panel. The infrared frame presents relative thermal differences: warmer areas appear yellow and orange, while cooler areas appear purple and black. It is a thermal view, not simply a visible photograph recolored for effect. NASA’s report does not provide a calibrated temperature map or specific panel temperatures.

“Selfie” is informal shorthand here. The spacecraft imaged a piece of its own structure; it did not take a full portrait of itself, and neither picture is a view of the Red Planet.

Why the images matter—and what they do not prove

Taking a picture of a known spacecraft component gives engineers a practical early check: the camera can be activated, directed toward a target within its field of view, and used to capture and return image data. NASA said the results showed that the cameras were working well. That is encouraging, but it is not evidence that every instrument function, calibration, or future Mars observation has been fully validated.

The visible-light image also suggested that VISIONS should have the sensitivity needed to observe Martian aurora from orbit. That is a preliminary assessment of capability, not a detection of aurora. At Mars, the infrared camera is intended to help researchers study how surface materials warm and cool over the day-night cycle and across seasons.

The other spacecraft’s first photos were black

Both ESCAPADE spacecraft successfully took their first photos, but only one returned the recognizable solar-panel images highlighted by NASA. The second spacecraft’s camera was aimed at deep space, so its images appeared black. NASA did not describe that result as a camera failure: in this case, pointing determined whether the camera had a visible target.

ESCAPADE’s larger mission at Mars

ESCAPADE stands for Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers. The two spacecraft are designed to study how the solar wind—a stream of charged particles flowing outward from the Sun—interacts with Mars’ upper atmosphere and surrounding plasma. Those interactions can help carry atmospheric particles away over time.

Mars does not have a global magnetic field like Earth’s, and solar-wind interactions are one of the processes scientists are investigating to understand atmospheric loss. ESCAPADE will measure the environment around Mars to help clarify how those processes work. The mission is not expected to explain every cause of atmospheric change on its own; the first panel images are an engineering milestone, not atmospheric-loss science results.

The planned route from Earth to Mars

ESCAPADE launched on November 13, 2025, aboard Blue Origin’s New Glenn from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Rather than taking a direct route to Mars, NASA’s November 2025 mission plan called for the spacecraft to enter a loiter, or Earth-proximity, orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 region, about one million miles from Earth. L2 is a region around which spacecraft can orbit, not a fixed parking spot where they remain without orbital control.

That plan called for the probes to return toward Earth in November 2026 for a gravity-assist maneuver, then arrive at Mars in September 2027. Those are the dates in NASA’s November 2025 report, not confirmation here of later mission status or schedule changes.

The early “selfies” are modest pictures with a useful purpose: they show that one camera system could image a spacecraft component and return visible and infrared data soon after launch. That reduces some uncertainty before the twin probes reach Mars and begin their primary work.
