The “new members” were Samsung’s Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra. Samsung said the three phones would receive up to four generations of Android and One UI upgrades, plus five years of security updates. Because they launched with Android 13, the four major upgrades point to Android 17 as the final planned Android version. The five-year security window is separate and extends into 2028; it does not mean Android upgrades continue through 2028.
What Samsung promised for the Galaxy S23 series
Samsung announced the Galaxy S23 family on January 25, 2023, and said the phones would join its extended-support program. The S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra went on broad sale on February 17, 2023. Samsung’s launch announcement specified four generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and five years of security updates.
At launch, the phones ran Android 13 with One UI 5.1. Samsung’s four-generation count refers to major upgrades after that starting version, not four Android versions in total:

That makes Android 17 the expected final major Android upgrade under the stated commitment. It is not a guarantee that every regional or carrier model receives the update at the same time.

Why “through 2028” needs context
The S23’s major-version roadmap and its security-update period are different parts of the policy. Four upgrades from Android 13 imply Android 17; five years of security support from the 2023 launch period takes support into 2028. Samsung’s business support table lists the S23 Ultra with Android 13 at launch, four OS upgrades, Android 17 as its target OS ceiling, and security support extending into 2028 (Samsung support-life table).
So “supported into 2028” is a reasonable shorthand for the security-support horizon, subject to model and regional terms. “Android updates until 2028” is not an accurate way to describe the four-upgrade promise. A phone can stop receiving major Android-version upgrades while still receiving security patches.
Samsung’s policy was selective, not universal
The S23 announcement extended a program Samsung had introduced in 2022: up to four generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and up to five years of security updates for selected devices. It was not a promise covering every Galaxy phone or tablet. Samsung described eligibility across selected Galaxy S, Z, A and tablet products and said it intended to expand the policy over time (Samsung’s policy announcement).

Samsung also cautions that upgrade availability and timing can vary by device model, market, country or region, and carrier. An unlocked phone and a carrier-branded version may therefore receive an update on different schedules. A rollout announcement for one country should not be treated as a universal release date.
Where the S23 stands in 2026
Samsung’s US support page lists the Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra among devices eligible for One UI 8, which is based on Android 16. That leaves Android 17 as the remaining major-version milestone implied by the original commitment. Rollout status and timing can differ by market, carrier and exact model (Samsung’s One UI 8 support information).
The same compatibility lists may include the Galaxy S23 FE, but it is a separate model. Its presence on a current software-compatibility list does not establish that it has identical support terms to the S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra.

Getting the same Android or One UI version also does not mean every feature will be identical across devices. Hardware, model, market and Samsung’s feature decisions can affect availability, including for newer AI features. Samsung’s support guidance says availability can vary by model, carrier and network conditions.
Is an S23 a sensible buy now?
The policy remains substantial for a phone launched in 2023, but a 2026 buyer should consider the remaining support window, not just the original promise. Samsung says the S23-era lines receive four years of OS updates and five years of security updates, while its S24 series has a seven-year OS and security-update commitment (Samsung’s S-series comparison). The S23 is not Samsung’s longest-supported option today.
- Check condition and age. A used or refurbished S23 has the same model-level support policy as a new-old-stock unit, but its battery may have more wear. Check battery condition, repair history, warranty and seller reputation.
- Verify the exact version. Confirm the model number, whether it is unlocked or carrier-branded, and compatibility with your networks. Update timing can differ between firmware variants.
- Decide how long you plan to keep it. A discounted S23 may make sense if its price and condition compensate for its shorter remaining support runway. If you want to keep a phone into the early 2030s, a newer Samsung model with a seven-year policy is the more relevant comparison.
- Do not buy on a feature assumption. A newer One UI version does not ensure every new feature, particularly AI features, is available on every S23 model or in every region.
To check for an update, open Settings → Software update → Download and install. If none appears, check the exact model and regional firmware, available storage, battery level, Wi-Fi connection and any carrier restrictions. A staged rollout may not yet have reached your device; Samsung’s instructions and labels can vary slightly by software version.
In short, Samsung’s 2023 announcement was a meaningful support extension for the S23 family. Its practical version target is Android 17, while security updates are expected to run into 2028. Those are strong terms for the generation, but they should not be mistaken for the longer support commitments Samsung later offered on newer phones.
