For many small blogs and straightforward business websites, Yoast SEO Free is enough. Premium is most worthwhile when its workflow tools—especially internal-link suggestions, redirect management, expanded content analysis, Google Docs integration, or included specialist plugins—save you meaningful time. It is a productivity upgrade, not a promise of higher rankings.

Yoast lists Premium at $118.80 per year, excluding VAT, for one WordPress site (about $9.90 per month when averaged, but billed annually). Pricing and bundles can change, so confirm the live Yoast Premium offer before buying.

What Yoast SEO Free already does

Free gives a WordPress site a substantial SEO foundation. In the editor, it can analyze a focus keyphrase, provide content and readability suggestions, and let you control how a page may appear in search results and social previews. It also supports XML sitemaps, indexing settings, canonical and other technical SEO signals, structured data, and standard WordPress content types.

That is enough for many small blogs and brochure sites to handle the routine work: write a clear title and description, make a page accessible to search engines as intended, and review basic on-page guidance. Yoast’s SEO analysis documentation distinguishes the basic checks available to everyone from Premium’s expanded analysis.

Free does not do SEO for you. A plugin cannot choose a useful topic, make content accurate and distinctive, earn relevant links, fix every performance or usability problem, or guarantee indexing and rankings. Treat its colored indicators as prompts to review—not a score that must be made green at any cost. Readability checks do not measure factual quality, persuasion, or search intent, and keyphrase suggestions are not a formula for keyword density.

What Premium adds—and when it matters

Expanded content checks and AI assistance

Premium adds AI-assisted title and meta-description suggestions and content optimization features. Its expanded keyphrase analysis can recognize word forms, synonyms, and related keyphrases, and supports broader targeting than a single basic focus phrase. This can reduce repetitive checking for writers who publish often or editors responsible for many pages.

These tools provide drafts and prompts, not editorial judgment. Review AI output for factual accuracy, specificity, tone, and whether it represents the actual page. A generic or over-optimized title can be worse than a carefully written one, especially on regulated or sensitive subjects.

Internal-link suggestions for growing sites

Premium can suggest relevant existing pages to link from new content. That is useful when a site has dozens or hundreds of posts, several writers, or topic clusters that need consistent connections. On a five-page services site or a small archive, manually choosing links is usually manageable.

Redirect management when URLs change

Premium includes a redirect manager, unlike Free. This can help during a redesign, permalink change, content cleanup, or consolidation project. A redirect tool does not decide what destination is appropriate: chains, loops, irrelevant destinations, and redirects of every deleted page to the homepage remain possible mistakes. Before enabling it, check whether your host, server, CDN, or another plugin already manages redirects to avoid competing systems.

Specialist Local, News, and Video SEO

Yoast currently lists Local SEO, News SEO, and Video SEO among the products included with Premium. They matter only if your site has the corresponding needs: local business information and location content, a news publication, or substantial video content. Confirm the included feature set against the current Premium product page.

WooCommerce SEO is separate. Yoast presents its WooCommerce SEO product as a bundle that includes Premium plus ecommerce-specific functionality. Its shop lists that bundle at $178.80 per year excluding VAT; confirm the current price and features at the WooCommerce SEO page. Do not assume ordinary Premium covers every ecommerce need.

Google Docs workflow, support, and training

Premium includes one seat for Yoast’s Google Docs add-on, useful when a draft moves through writer, client, and editor approval before publication. Yoast lists the add-on separately at $5 per month excluding VAT. Solo publishers who write in WordPress may get little from it. Premium also includes 24/7 support and full Yoast SEO Academy access, which can have real value for a business owner or beginner who would otherwise spend time troubleshooting or learning independently.

AI-search and machine-readable content claims

Yoast markets features related to structured data and AI readiness. Structured data can help systems interpret information on a site, but no plugin setting, schema feature, or AI crawler control guarantees rankings, citations, or inclusion in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI features, or other answer systems. Treat these as evolving technical capabilities, not a promised visibility outcome.

Is Yoast Premium worth it for your site?

  • Small blog or simple brochure site: Start with Free if publishing is occasional, the archive is modest, and you can write metadata and add links manually.
  • Frequent publisher or large archive: Premium becomes easier to justify when expanded analysis and internal-link suggestions save recurring editorial time. Page counts such as 20–30 versus hundreds are practical clues, not official Yoast thresholds.
  • Local business: Consider Premium if its Local SEO features match your location and business-information needs. A small, stable site may still be fine with Free.
  • News or video publisher: The included News SEO or Video SEO tools may be relevant; a general-purpose blog should not pay for features it will not use.
  • Agency or editorial team: Google Docs integration, standardized checks, Academy access, and support may matter more than any single plugin feature. Count every site license and compare the total annual bill.
  • WooCommerce store: Price the separate WooCommerce SEO bundle and compare it with the store’s current product-schema and SEO setup.
  • Experienced SEO user: Free may suffice if you already manage redirects, internal links, titles, technical checks, and reporting with tools you trust.

A practical test is to list the tasks you would actually use each month, estimate the hours or risk they save, and compare that value with $118.80 per site per year plus any applicable tax. Do not count unused bundled features as value.

What happens when Premium expires?

Yoast says an installed Premium plugin does not simply disappear when its subscription expires: most plugin functionality generally continues, but word-form (morphology) functionality and AI features are restricted. Support and updates are also tied to an active subscription. Check the current Yoast license-expiration explanation and the renewal or cancellation terms at checkout, since product behavior and terms can change.

How Yoast compares with alternatives

There is no universal winner. Switching is most sensible when another plugin’s licensing, free features, or workflow better fits your actual requirements—not merely because its feature list is longer.

  • Rank Math: Worth comparing if you want a broad feature set or a more generous free tier. Check its current pricing and plan limits, including site counts, AI credits, and support terms; those can change.
  • AIOSEO: A broad suite aimed at business owners and agencies, with paid capabilities including redirects, local SEO, internal linking, WooCommerce SEO, and rank tracking. Its displayed prices are introductory and renewal prices differ; review the current AIOSEO pricing page before comparing totals.
  • SEOPress: A potentially lower-cost choice for multi-site owners. SEOPress advertises PRO tiers at $49 per year for one site, $59 for five, and $149 for unlimited sites, subject to current terms. Check its pricing page and feature fit against Yoast’s support, training, and workflow.

When migrating, back up the site, use the destination plugin’s import process, verify titles, descriptions, canonicals, schema, and sitemap output, then deactivate the old SEO plugin. Running two SEO plugins together can produce duplicate metadata, schema, sitemap, or canonical output.

Bottom line: choose by workload, not by feature count

Choose Yoast SEO Free if your WordPress site is straightforward and you are comfortable handling content decisions and routine maintenance yourself. Choose Premium when its editorial workflow, redirects, specialist features, training, or support solves a recurring problem worth more than its per-site annual cost. Choose another plugin if multi-site economics or a different feature mix matters more—and do not buy any SEO plugin expecting it to guarantee better rankings.
