The Pixel 9 series preorder window opened in the U.S. on August 13, 2024, and has ended. At launch, the Pixel 9 started at $799, Pixel 9 Pro at $999, Pixel 9 Pro XL at $1,099, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold at $1,799. The Pixel 9 and Pro XL went on sale August 22, 2024; the Pro and Pro Fold followed September 4. This archived launch guide explains where and how preorders worked, what each model cost, and what to check when buying any remaining stock. Prices and promotions below are historical launch terms, not current offers.
Pixel 9 series launch prices and dates
Google opened U.S. preorders for all four phones on August 13, 2024. The listed starting prices were for launch configurations; storage upgrades, taxes, and other charges could change the total. Google’s Pixel 9 launch announcement gives the prices and retail dates for the first three models, while its Pro Fold announcement covers that model.

These dates and prices are specific to the U.S. launch. Google said other markets would follow different schedules, so they should not be treated as worldwide availability or current pricing.
Where preorders were available
Google Store
The Google Store was the direct route for an unlocked phone, Google trade-in, and Google-specific payment options. Its product configurator let buyers select a model, size where applicable, color, storage, carrier option, trade-in, protection, and delivery estimate. Options and offers could vary by configuration and location.

Wireless carriers
Carriers offered installment plans, trade-in deals, and promotions tied to new lines or upgrades. Verizon announced preorders for all four models and advertised discounts for eligible customers. For example, its launch offer advertised up to $800 off with an eligible trade-in and Unlimited Ultimate, with credits applied over as many as 36 months. That was a dated offer, not a current deal; see the Verizon launch terms for the historical conditions.
Google Store checkout also identified carrier activation options including Verizon and AT&T, but that does not establish that a particular promotion or configuration is available today. Google Fi and other carrier offers should likewise be checked on the provider’s live product page rather than assumed from the 2024 launch.
Retail partners
Google said retail partners would sell the Pixel 9 and Pro XL from August 22, with the Pro and Pro Fold following September 4. Retail inventory, pickup, colors, and return terms depended on each seller. Because preorder pages can redirect, sell out, or show later-generation devices, check the actual model and configuration before placing an order.

How the Google Store preorder process worked
The same basic selection flow applies when buying an available configuration from the Google Store today, though the preorder label and launch offers are gone:
- Open the U.S. Google Store and select the Pixel model you want.
- Choose the size if the model offers a choice. The Pixel 9 Pro has a 6.3-inch display; the Pro XL has a 6.8-inch display.
- Select a color and storage capacity. Confirm the selected configuration is actually available.
- Choose an unlocked phone or a supported carrier option. Check compatibility with your carrier and market.
- If trading in a phone, select the correct make, model, storage, and condition and review the estimate and trade-in rules.
- Add or decline Pixel Care+ after reviewing the coverage, price, location availability, and exclusions.
- Check the delivery estimate, taxes, shipping, payment schedule, promotional credits, and any trade-in deadlines.
- Add the phone to your cart, enter delivery and payment information, and submit the order.
- Save the order number and confirmation email. If you selected trade-in, follow the separate shipping instructions and keep the tracking details.
A successful order should show a confirmation and an estimated delivery date. During a launch, estimates can change with inventory, color, storage, carrier selection, and destination. Use the estimate at checkout and later order-status updates rather than treating the advertised retail date as a delivery guarantee.
Which Pixel 9 should you choose?
- Pixel 9: The least expensive conventional model at launch. Google lists a 6.3-inch display, Tensor G4, 12GB of RAM, and upgraded cameras. Choose it if lower cost matters more than Pro camera hardware and features.
- Pixel 9 Pro: The compact Pro choice, with a 6.3-inch display and higher-end camera and display features than the standard Pixel 9. It suits buyers who want a smaller phone without giving up the Pro tier.
- Pixel 9 Pro XL: The larger conventional Pro, with a 6.8-inch display. Google describes the Pro and Pro XL as sharing most specifications, with differences including size, charging speed, and power-related characteristics. Choose it if you want a large screen and Pro hardware without a folding design.
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold: A distinct foldable that opens to a larger, tablet-like screen for multitasking. It is not simply a larger Pro: camera hardware, dimensions, durability considerations, repair economics, and accessory needs differ. Choose it for the foldable format and expanded screen, not on the assumption that it matches the Pro or Pro XL camera experience.

Unlocked purchase or carrier deal?
An unlocked Google Store purchase generally makes more sense if you may switch carriers, want to choose a plan independently, or prefer Google’s direct trade-in and support route. Verify network compatibility and the SIM or eSIM configuration for your exact model and carrier.

A carrier offer can reduce the effective device cost if you already intend to stay on the required plan for the full credit period. Read the total commitment, not just the phone’s advertised monthly price. A “free” or heavily discounted phone usually means bill credits spread across an installment term, not an instant discount.
Before accepting a carrier deal, check whether it requires a new line or eligible upgrade, a specific plan, a qualifying trade-in, a minimum period of prior device activity, or activation by a deadline. Credits may stop if you leave, pay off or change the line in a way that ends eligibility, or move to an ineligible plan; an unpaid device balance may then become due. Taxes, activation fees, and the cost of the required wireless plan can remain payable even when credits cover device installments.

Trade-ins: estimate carefully and prepare the old phone
Google Store and carrier trade-in values depend on the exact device, storage, condition, functionality, and promotion. Do not treat an “up to” amount as the value your phone will receive. A final inspection can lower the amount or reject a device if its condition differs from the description.
- Save a screenshot of the estimate, eligibility rules, and deadline.
- Back up your data, then sign out of Google, Apple, Samsung, or other accounts and disable device locks that could prevent reuse.
- Photograph the phone’s condition, including the screen and any existing damage, before packing it.
- Factory-reset the phone only after confirming the backup is complete.
- Follow the seller’s packaging and shipping instructions, send it by the stated deadline, and retain tracking and inspection records.
Check what happens if inspection changes the value: whether you can decline the revised amount, whether the device can be returned, and who pays return shipping. Cracked glass, display faults, water damage, faulty cameras or charging ports, account locks, and a mismatch between the declared and sent model can all affect the result.
Financing, protection, and launch bonuses
Google’s financing information advertised 0% APR for up to 36 months on qualifying purchases, subject to approval and account terms. Google Store also listed carrier financing and payment options such as Klarna and PayPal Pay Later. These are different credit arrangements, not discounts: approval, repayment schedule, late-payment consequences, and any interest or fees depend on the provider and selected plan. Klarna Pay in 4 was described as interest-free when paid on time; other plans or missed payments may have different terms.

Pixel Care+ may be offered during checkout, but pricing and coverage vary by model and location. Compare the premium, deductible or service fees, covered events, exclusions, and claim limits with the cost of repairing or replacing the phone yourself.
At launch, Google said Pixel 9 Pro, Pro XL, and Pro Fold buyers would receive a year of Gemini Advanced with purchase. That was a historical launch benefit, not an offer to assume when buying now. Later Google Store pages have displayed other time-limited AI and storage offers. Check the dated terms for eligible model, purchase and activation deadline, redemption steps, payment requirements, renewal, and cancellation before counting any subscription benefit toward a phone’s value.
If a preorder or product page is unavailable
The original preorder period has ended, so a missing preorder button is expected. If a product page remains live, it may be a regular purchase page rather than a preorder. For any remaining-stock listing:
- Confirm you are on the right country storefront and that the page names the exact Pixel 9 model.
- Try another color or storage option if the selected configuration is unavailable.
- Compare Google Store, carrier, and verified retail listings for actual stock, delivery, pickup, and return terms.
- Do not infer current pricing or availability from 2024 launch prices, old links, or a promotion that has expired.
- If considering a used or refurbished phone, check the seller’s condition grading, return window, warranty, and whether the device is unlocked and free of account or financing locks.
For a current purchase, verify live inventory and the checkout delivery estimate on the seller’s page on the day you order. This guide does not claim that any particular Pixel 9 configuration is in stock or at a particular price in 2026.
