What the course covers
The course follows the ordinary workflow of using a WordPress site: understand the dashboard, create content, adjust the site’s appearance, and handle routine administration. Its advertised syllabus includes the following areas.
- Getting oriented: what WordPress is, the dashboard, posts versus pages, and the Block Editor (also commonly called Gutenberg).
- Creating content: drafting and editing posts and pages; adding images, links, buttons, video, audio, and PDFs; choosing featured images; and using categories and tags.
- Customizing a site: menus, widgets, a static homepage, theme customization, installing themes, and installing plugins.
- Working with blocks: text, media, design, widget, and pattern blocks. The exact available blocks depend on WordPress, the active theme, and installed plugins; WordPress.org maintains a current blocks reference.
- Basic administration: the Media Library, comments, users and profiles, tools, and WordPress settings.
The practical aim is to make a beginner comfortable with common publishing and site-management tasks. For example, a learner should be able to make an About page, draft a blog post, add media, and find basic administration screens. The course page and its lesson outline describe an introductory curriculum, not a guarantee that every learner will be ready to launch or maintain a production website without further work.

Posts and pages in plain terms
Posts are generally date-oriented content such as articles or news updates. Pages are generally for more permanent, standalone information such as About, Contact, or Services. A site can use both; the course introduces how to create and manage them.

Is it really free?
As checked on August 18, 2026, the WPBeginner course page advertised free access and showed a former $49 price crossed out. Joining the WPBeginner video-tutorial platform may require creating an account or logging in. These are changeable offer and access details, not a permanent price guarantee; check the course page and join page before signing up.
Who should take it?
This is a sensible starting point if you are new to WordPress, prefer videos to documentation, or have inherited a site and need to understand its basic controls. Bloggers, small-business owners, and nontechnical site administrators can benefit from a structured tour instead of piecing together answers from unrelated tutorials.
It is not a developer course, a full website strategy program, or specialist training in SEO, ecommerce, accessibility, security, backups, or performance. Someone building a store, learning theme or plugin development, or troubleshooting a complex site will need additional material. The WordPress fundamentals may still help, but they do not replace that specialist learning.

The course teaches WordPress usage; it does not itself provide your website, domain, hosting, design, or content. You can learn the concepts without a public site, but hands-on practice is more useful. For a live self-hosted site, you will typically need a domain and web hosting with WordPress installed. WordPress.com is a hosted service, while self-hosted WordPress uses software available from WordPress.org on hosting you arrange; setup and available controls can differ. WordPress.org’s getting-started guide treats planning, installation, setup, themes, and plugins as parts of the broader process.
If possible, practice on a test or staging site rather than experimenting first on a business site. Try drafting a post, making an About page, adding an image with appropriate alternative text, creating navigation, and previewing changes. Back up a live site before changing themes, plugins, templates, navigation, or global styles. Review settings carefully rather than changing unfamiliar values just to follow along.
How current is the course for modern WordPress?
The course includes the Block Editor, which WordPress.org describes as the editor for composing posts and pages from blocks. The Block Editor is not the same thing as the Site Editor. The Block Editor primarily edits an individual post or page. With a compatible block theme active, the Site Editor can control broader site elements such as templates, navigation, styles, headers, footers, and patterns. WordPress.org documents it under Appearance > Editor.
This distinction matters when following older or theme-specific demonstrations. A lesson about the Customizer, widgets, or classic-theme menus may not match your screen if your site uses a block theme. If you cannot find “Customizer,” check whether your active theme is a block theme; its site-wide controls may be in the Site Editor instead. WordPress.com, hosting dashboards, user permissions, plugins, and WordPress versions can also change the menus you see. Treat lesson labels as guidance, not universal screen-by-screen instructions.

Some lessons may be sequential: the course lesson page indicates that earlier lessons and quizzes can be required before later material unlocks. If you are blocked, log in, return to the course dashboard, and complete any missing lesson or quiz.

- Theme, plugin, and platform differences can make the learner’s interface diverge from a lesson.
- Installing plugins is only one step: check documentation, update activity, compatibility information, and support quality, and avoid unnecessary or overlapping plugins.
How it compares with other beginner resources
Learn WordPress: The official Beginner WordPress User course is a strong choice if you want first-party training. Its curriculum covers domains and hosting, themes and plugins, dashboard use, content, the Block Editor, and the distinction between the Block Editor and Site Editor. The course page states it was last updated June 3, 2026.
WordPress.org documentation: The documentation library is useful when you want searchable reference material or need to troubleshoot a particular feature, rather than follow a linear video course.
WP101: This is a different provider from WPBeginner. Its separate WordPress 101 course is part of a paid tutorial service. As seen August 18, 2026, WP101 advertised monthly, annual, and lifetime memberships, along with a trial and additional features; verify its current plans and terms on its membership page. It may suit learners who value a broader paid video library and support. If you only need an introductory course at no charge, start by checking WPBeginner’s current offer or the official Learn WordPress course.
What to learn after WordPress 101
Once the basics make sense, use a small launch checklist before relying on a site publicly: check the site title and tagline, permalink structure, time zone, user roles, homepage and posts page, navigation, and mobile appearance. Add an appropriate contact method and any privacy or legal pages your site needs. Then establish a routine for backups, updates, security, performance, image optimization, accessibility, analytics, and search visibility. These are important operational topics, but they should not be assumed to be fully taught by this beginner course.
If you intend to sell online, study WooCommerce and the additional work around products, payments, shipping, taxes, customer accounts, orders, security, and transactional email. WordPress 101 can provide useful foundations, but it is not an ecommerce course.
