It’s no longer just a “may soon” feature: Microsoft now documents a way to browse and manage files on a compatible Android phone wirelessly in Windows 11 File Explorer. You’ll need Android 11 or later, Link to Windows version 1.24072.258.0 or later, and a working phone-PC connection. Pair the devices, then turn on Show mobile device in File Explorer in Windows Settings.
From Insider preview to a documented Windows feature
The feature first appeared in early reporting in June 2024. Microsoft officially began rolling it out to Windows Insiders on July 25, 2024, describing wireless access to Android phone files from File Explorer. Microsoft now provides consumer setup instructions, so the old “may soon” framing is outdated. Availability can still vary by device and software version. What it does—and what it doesn’t
After setup, your phone appears as a connected mobile device in File Explorer. You can browse accessible folders, open compatible files, and copy, move, rename, or delete files between the phone and PC. Standard copy-and-paste and drag-and-drop workflows can make occasional transfers straightforward.
This is not the same as turning your phone into a conventional local disk or USB drive. File access is mediated by Link to Windows, permissions, and the wireless connection. Not every folder or app’s private data is necessarily visible, and performance may differ from a cable connection. Treat move and delete operations as changes to the phone’s files, not just to a PC copy.

Requirements for File Explorer access
- A PC running Windows 11.
- An Android phone running Android 11 or later.
- Link to Windows version 1.24072.258.0 or later, as specified by Microsoft’s dedicated File Explorer instructions.
- A Wi-Fi connection for the phone and PC, plus a Microsoft account and approval of the requested permissions during pairing.
Microsoft lists lower thresholds—Android 10 and Link to Windows 1.23112.189 or later—on a separate page about broader mobile-device management in Windows. Those figures do not establish compatibility with the more specific File Explorer file-access feature. In Microsoft’s terminology, Phone Link is the Windows app, while Link to Windows is the Android companion app or, on supported phones, a built-in service. The File Explorer option is managed through Windows Settings, but it belongs to this Phone Link and Link to Windows ecosystem. Microsoft explains the naming here.

How to add your phone to File Explorer
- On the Android phone, update Link to Windows if an update is available. Check that the phone runs Android 11 or later.
- Connect the PC and phone to the same Wi-Fi network.
- On Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage devices.
- If the phone is not already paired, choose Add device. Scan the QR code displayed on the PC with the phone and follow the prompts.
- Approve the requested permissions on the phone.
- In the device-management screen, enable Show mobile device in File Explorer.
- Open File Explorer and select the phone in the navigation area.
Pairing alone may not make the phone appear in File Explorer: the display toggle must also be enabled. Microsoft’s step-by-step instructions provide the current Settings path and toggle name.

Microsoft says only one mobile device can be displayed in File Explorer at a time. You can pair multiple devices, but you must switch which phone is shown; enabling one disables File Explorer display for another.

Deletion is consequential, though Microsoft says deleted files can be recovered for 30 days from the Android Recycle bin – Connected device folder. Check the destination and verify important copies before removing originals. The feature is a transfer convenience, not an independent backup.
If your phone or files don’t appear
The phone is paired but missing in File Explorer
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage devices and check that Show mobile device in File Explorer is on.
- Confirm both devices are still connected to Wi-Fi and inspect the phone’s status in Manage devices.
- Update Link to Windows, then restart Phone Link or Link to Windows and try again. If needed, restart both devices.
- If the connection appears corrupted, remove the phone from the PC’s device list and pair it again.
The File Explorer toggle is missing
Check the Windows and Android versions and Link to Windows version first. The feature may also not be available for a particular phone, account, region, or installation yet; Microsoft’s earlier announcement described a gradual rollout. Support documentation confirms the capability, but it does not guarantee that every device combination has the option.

Transfers fail or folders are unavailable
Review the permissions granted to Link to Windows and confirm the Wi-Fi connection remains active. Try a smaller file to distinguish a connection issue from a large-transfer problem, and make sure the PC has enough free storage when copying to it. App-private or otherwise protected Android locations may not be exposed; if a file belongs to an app, use that app’s export or sharing function. For a large, urgent, or unreliable wireless transfer, use USB instead.

The File Explorer option complements USB rather than replacing it. Choose USB when you need a dependable local route for a large batch or have no usable Wi-Fi. Choose cloud sync when you want files or photos to remain available across devices over time. For protected app data, export it from the Android app itself.

Because the feature gives the PC access to phone content after permissions are approved, use it only with a Windows account you trust. On shared PCs, consider whether other users can access that account. For sensitive files, copy them to the intended location and verify the copy before deleting anything from the phone.
