Microsoft Office 2024 is a one-time-purchase version of the classic Office desktop apps for one PC or Mac. It suits people who want Word, Excel and PowerPoint without a subscription. It does not include Microsoft 365’s ongoing feature releases, subscription cloud storage or full collaboration bundle. If you need multiple devices, OneDrive storage, Copilot or the latest features, Microsoft 365 is usually a better fit.
What is Microsoft Office 2024?
“Office 2024” is a family of products, not one universal package. The consumer editions are Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024. Organizations can license Office LTSC 2024 through commercial volume licensing. Each is a perpetual license for the purchased major version: you can continue using it, but a future major Office release is not included. Microsoft describes the consumer release as a one-time purchase; it receives quality and security updates, not the continuing feature additions associated with Microsoft 365. Office LTSC Standard and Professional Plus are not ordinary consumer Microsoft Store editions. In particular, a listing for “Professional Plus 2024” from an unfamiliar seller is not equivalent to buying a consumer license from Microsoft or an authorized retailer. Microsoft’s LTSC overview explains the commercial editions and deployment model. Publisher is not listed among the apps in the consumer Home or Home & Business packages.

The consumer Office 2024 lifecycle began on October 1, 2024. Microsoft lists its retirement date as October 10, 2029. Office LTSC 2024 became generally available to commercial and government customers in September 2024; its support ends on October 9, 2029. The dates differ by one day, so they should not be conflated.

Consumer Office 2024 follows Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy. LTSC follows the Fixed Lifecycle Policy, with five years of Mainstream Support and no Extended Support period after that. “Five years of support” is therefore a clear description of LTSC’s term, not a substitute for the consumer edition’s stated policy and dates. What changed in Office 2024?
Office 2024 packages a set of app improvements into a fixed release. Microsoft 365 users may have encountered some capabilities earlier through subscription updates, so “new in Office 2024” does not necessarily mean first introduced on the day Office 2024 launched. Also, the release notes cover consumer and LTSC variants; not every capability applies to every edition, operating system or Mac version. Microsoft’s Office 2024 and LTSC feature list identifies distinctions.
Excel
- Charts can refer to dynamic arrays and update as the array contents change.
- Fourteen text and array functions are included in the release. Their availability is not exclusive to Office 2024; Microsoft 365 users may already know many of them.
- The IMAGE function places images in cells, making them easier to manage alongside table data.
- Microsoft reports improved speed and stability when multiple independently calculating workbooks are open.
PowerPoint
- Cameo places a live camera feed on a slide.
- Recording Studio can capture presentation video, narration, ink gestures and the presenter’s video presence.
- Users can embed Microsoft Stream videos and add closed captions or subtitles to video and audio.
Outlook
- Search suggestions are improved for email, attachments, contacts and calendar items.
- Meeting creation is more flexible, including options to shorten meetings automatically to leave breaks between calls.
- Scheduled send and Focused Inbox are among the capabilities Microsoft lists for Outlook on Mac.
Word, OneNote and cross-app changes
- Word can reopen documents that were open when it closed unexpectedly, improving session recovery.
- OneNote LTSC 2024 has an improved Draw tab and inking experience; this is an LTSC-specific description, not a claim that every OneNote edition is identical.
- Across supported apps, the release includes a Fluent Design-based default theme, accessibility improvements, OpenDocument Format 1.4 support in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and comment Like reactions.
- Microsoft also describes Android phone photo insertion into Office documents, subject to platform and edition limitations.
Access
Access LTSC 2024 adds a Dataverse connector and Power Platform-related capabilities. Access is available in certain commercial Windows editions, including Professional Plus, but it is not included in Office Home or Home & Business and is not available for Mac.

Microsoft says Microsoft 365 includes Office 2024 features as well as additional collaboration, productivity, security and intelligent capabilities. The exact features, storage and AI benefits vary by subscription. Consult the current Microsoft 365 plan comparison rather than assuming every plan includes every benefit.
Office 2024 is not “offline Office” in the absolute sense. A retail copy needs internet access for redemption and activation, and internet access is needed for automatic updates and security patches. Microsoft says it is not intended for fully disconnected environments. LTSC can accommodate restricted networks more effectively because an organization can host updates on-premises, but it is an enterprise deployment and licensing route, not a consumer offline workaround.
Compatibility: Windows and Mac
Windows
Microsoft’s consumer requirements list Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility. But Windows 10 reached Microsoft’s support end date on October 14, 2025. An Office app being installable on Windows 10 does not mean that Windows 10 continues to receive support or security updates. For a new setup, prefer Windows 11 or another currently supported operating system unless your organization has a managed, documented reason to remain on a specific Windows 10 edition. LTSC has a more specific supported-OS list: Windows 11, Windows 11 LTSC 2024, Windows 10 LTSC 2021 and LTSC 2019, Windows Server 2025 and Windows Server 2022. Arm-based devices require Windows 11. The LTSC minimum hardware listed by Microsoft includes a 1.1 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 4 GB of available storage and a 1280 × 768 display. A 64-bit Office build is required for 4K and higher resolutions. These enterprise requirements should not be treated as the consumer product’s complete requirements list; see the LTSC overview.
Office 2024 supports 32-bit and 64-bit Windows builds. Microsoft generally recommends 64-bit Office on systems with 4 GB or more of memory, but older add-ins, VBA projects or integrations may require 32-bit compatibility. Check those dependencies before changing architectures.
Mac
Office for Mac support tracks the three most recent macOS versions; Microsoft drops the oldest supported version as new major macOS releases arrive. Older Macs may have reduced functionality or fall outside the supported range. Intel and Apple Silicon Macs are supported, but that does not guarantee identical feature parity across architectures or between Mac and Windows. Check the current Office FAQ and the relevant system requirements before purchase.

Installation, activation and organizational deployment
Consumer Office 2024 for Windows uses Click-to-Run, rather than the older Windows Installer (MSI) technology. The Mac version uses Apple’s standard package format. VBA remains supported. For LTSC, organizations can deploy with established enterprise tools such as Configuration Manager and activate by Key Management Service (KMS) or Multiple Activation Key (MAK). Organizations moving from older MSI-based Office installations may need to remove or replace those installations as part of deployment. - Choose Office Home 2024 if you use one PC or Mac for personal, home or school work, need Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and do not need Outlook or a recurring subscription.
- Choose Office Home & Business 2024 if you need Outlook and a one-device license for both home and work use, but do not need multi-device access or the Microsoft 365 service bundle.
- Consider Microsoft 365 Personal if one person uses Office across devices, needs OneDrive storage or wants continuing features and subscription-linked services.
- Consider Microsoft 365 Family if several people in a household need their own apps and storage. It can be more practical than buying separate one-device licenses, but it is a recurring subscription.
- Consider Microsoft 365 Premium only if its specific higher-tier AI or usage benefits are what you need; verify current plan terms and who in the household receives those benefits.
- Consider Office LTSC 2024 only if your organization needs a fixed feature baseline, centralized deployment, volume activation or controlled-network operation and can manage commercial licensing.
Office 2024 is less compelling if you need Copilot, extensive OneDrive storage, real-time collaboration, several devices, frequent device changes or a fully disconnected installation. An Office 2021 owner should weigh the new features and remaining support window against the cost of a separate upgrade; there is no automatic upgrade entitlement from a prior perpetual release.

The same August 18, 2026 U.S. Store comparison listed Microsoft 365 Personal at $99.99 per year or $9.99 per month, Family at $129.99 per year or $12.99 per month, and Premium at $199.99 per year or $19.99 per month. These are dated U.S. figures, not worldwide or permanent prices; use the official comparison page to confirm current pricing, plan names and inclusions.
Whether perpetual Office is cheaper depends on how long you keep the same release and how many people and devices need it. One user on one computer who wants a fixed feature set may prefer paying once. A household using multiple devices, or a user who values storage and ongoing updates, may get more practical value from a subscription. There is no universal break-even point without accounting for region, promotions, plan terms and upgrade timing.
Buy through Microsoft or a seller whose authorization and licensing terms you can verify. Very cheap “lifetime key” offers may have unclear provenance, region restrictions or a license intended for volume deployment rather than an individual retail buyer. A product key alone is not proof of a valid transferable consumer license.
