Twitter is now called X, but its setting is still named Quality filter. It reduces lower-quality items in your Notifications timeline, with X citing duplicate posts and content that appears automated as examples. X says it does not filter notifications from people you follow or accounts you have recently interacted with. It is a notification control—not a universal filter for posts, search results, or your account’s visibility.
What the Quality filter does
With the Quality filter on, X tries to keep some lower-quality activity out of your Notifications timeline. Its documented examples include duplicate posts and content that appears to be automated. In practice, the setting may suppress some spam-like or repetitive notifications, but X does not publish a complete checklist of the rules used by this toggle. “Low quality” is an automated classification; it does not necessarily mean a post is false, harmful, or poorly written.
X’s separate technical explanation of notification recommendations describes signals and quality controls used to select and rank notification candidates. That provides context for how recommendations can work, but it is not a full specification of the Quality filter itself. X’s notification recommendations documentation discusses signals such as engagement and post or account characteristics; it should not be read as a guarantee that the toggle catches every bot, abusive post, or unwanted reply.
X says notifications from people you follow and accounts you have recently interacted with are not filtered by this setting. The help page does not define exactly how recent an interaction must be or which interactions count. This exception also does not guarantee delivery of every alert: other settings, account or post availability, and delivery issues can still matter.

According to X’s current help documentation, the filter may be on by default for people new to X or after an app reinstall. That is not a claim that it is always enabled for every account; behavior and labels may vary by app version and account interface. See X’s Notifications timeline guide.
What it does not do
- It does not delete the original post or block its author. It filters notifications. The post may still be available from its conversation, profile, search, or another timeline, subject to other X rules and settings.
- It is not a universal Home timeline filter. X documents it as a notification setting, not as a control for everything shown in Home or For You.
- It is not Safe Search. Safe Search concerns sensitive and blocked or muted material in search results. Search has its own tabs and ranking; X describes Top search results separately.
- It is not the same as muted words, muted accounts, blocking, or Advanced filters. Those are separate controls and can work alongside the Quality filter.
- It does not prove that an account is shadowbanned. A missing notification alone is not evidence of a search or reach restriction.
- Turning it off is not guaranteed to restore every past alert. It may let more activity appear, but X does not promise that previously filtered notifications will be reconstructed.
How to turn the Quality filter on or off
The exact controls may shift as X updates its apps. If you do not see the option in the Notifications timeline, look in notification settings from Settings and privacy.

On X.com
- Open Notifications.
- Click Settings.
- Turn the Quality filter checkbox on or off.
On iPhone or iPad
- Open Notifications.
- Tap the gear icon.
- Use the slider beside Quality filter to switch it on or off.
On Android
- Open Notifications.
- Tap the gear icon.
- Check or uncheck Quality filter.
Quality filter versus other X controls

For Advanced filters on X.com, open Notifications → Settings → Advanced filters. Options documented by X include filtering notifications from new accounts you do not follow, accounts that do not follow you, accounts you do not follow, accounts with a default profile photo that you do not follow, and accounts without confirmed email or phone numbers that you do not follow. The Quality filter is one possible explanation, not the only one. Work through these checks before drawing conclusions:

- Check the Notifications view. Select All, not only Mentions or Verified. X offers these as distinct notification views.
- Check Advanced filters. A notification may match an account category you chose to exclude.
- Review muted words and accounts. A post may match a muted term, or its author may be muted.
- Confirm what happened. A reply, quote, or repost is not always a direct mention of your handle. Open the account or conversation to see whether the post exists and what it says.
- Check availability and access. The post or account may have been deleted, suspended, protected, blocked, or otherwise unavailable to you.
- Check delivery permissions. Device or browser notification permissions can prevent push alerts even when activity appears in X.
- Refresh and compare. If the setting seems not to save, refresh or sign back in, then compare X.com with the mobile app in case one view is stale or arranged differently.
- Allow for delivery problems. Alerts can be delayed or fail; a missing notification is not, on its own, proof of account-level visibility restrictions.
Should you leave it on?

| Creator or public figure | Try both settings when attention spikes. Keep it on for a quieter inbox; turn it off when reviewing unfamiliar replies matters more. |
| Business or customer-support account | Consider turning it off or using a separate monitoring workflow if missing an out-of-network customer response is costly. |
| Journalist or researcher | Turn it off when completeness matters, while remembering that X does not guarantee delivery of every alert. |
| Someone facing harassment | The filter may reduce noise, but it is not protection by itself. Consider Advanced filters, mute, block, and reporting as appropriate. |
The trade-off is straightforward: on means a cleaner notification stream, with a chance that some legitimate but unusual or low-history activity is omitted; off means more visibility into incoming activity, along with more repetitive, irrelevant, or spam-like alerts. Choose based on whether quiet or completeness matters more for your account.
