In current PCSX2 builds, open Settings → Controllers and start with SDL, the recommended input source. Select Controller Port 1, choose Automatic Mapping, then check every button and stick in a game or with the PS2 Pad Test homebrew. If the automatic layout is wrong, clear it and map the controls manually.
This guide covers the integrated controller settings in modern PCSX2—not the old LilyPad plug-in menus found in many legacy tutorials. Labels can vary slightly between stable and nightly builds. The official controller documentation is the reference for current options.
Before you begin
Install PCSX2, connect your controller by USB or Bluetooth, and confirm that your operating system recognizes it. You also need PCSX2 configured with a game and a BIOS dump obtained from your own PlayStation 2; see the official setup guide for BIOS requirements. PCSX2 is a PlayStation 2 emulator, not a PlayStation 1 emulator, and its current releases support Windows, Linux, and macOS. The project repository listed version 2.6.3 as its latest release on January 28, 2026; nightly builds may use different labels or behavior.
Open controller settings
- Launch PCSX2 and open Settings.
- Select Controllers.
- Check the available Input Sources and confirm that your controller appears under the source you plan to use.
Older guides may say Config → Controllers (PAD) → Plugin Settings or refer to LilyPad or OnePad. Those are legacy instructions; current PCSX2 has integrated controller support in its Qt interface. The PCSX2 FAQ provides legacy context.

Choose an input source

Map a controller to Port 1
For a one-player setup, configure Controller Port 1 first; it is the usual first-player port.
- Select Controller Port 1.
- Choose Automatic Mapping and select your connected controller.
- Inspect the populated mapping. Automatic mapping is unavailable with DirectInput and should not be relied on with SDL Raw Input.
- Manually correct any missing, reversed, or incorrectly assigned controls.
- Close or leave settings, launch a game, and verify the result.
If you need manual mapping, click a PS2 control in the interface, then press or move the corresponding physical control when prompted. At minimum, check:
- D-pad up, down, left, and right.
- Left and right analog sticks, including both horizontal and vertical movement for each.
- Cross, circle, square, triangle, L1, R1, L2, and R2.
- Start and Select.
- L3 and R3 (stick clicks), plus the Analog control, if the game uses them.
The D-pad is digital; it is not the same as either analog stick. A common mapping error is assigning a stick axis to a D-pad direction or mapping only one axis. Move each stick fully up, down, left, and right when prompted, then verify that directions are not reversed. If an axis is inverted, remap it or use an inversion control if your current interface exposes one; labels differ across devices and sources. Some games also require analog mode, so a correctly mapped stick may still need that game setting.

You can assign more than one PC input to a PS2 control—for example, both a keyboard key and a gamepad button. Shift-click a mapping button to open the add/remove mapping menu. Use Clear Mapping when you want to discard a faulty layout and start over.
Set up keyboard controls
Keyboard input can be mapped in the same controller page: select a PS2 control, then press the key you want to use. Map the directional controls, face buttons, shoulder buttons, Start, and Select, and test each one. A keyboard can be used alongside a gamepad, including by adding a second binding to a control with shift-click. If keyboard presses trigger PCSX2 menus or pause actions unexpectedly, check for overlapping emulator hotkeys or Steam Desktop Layout bindings.

Configure vibration
When a compatible device and input source expose vibration, map the DualShock 2’s separate Large Motor and Small Motor entries to the corresponding controller motors. If no suitable motor appears, the controller or its driver may not expose vibration through that source.
For an official DualShock 4 or DualSense, enable the enhanced SDL mode for additional features such as LED control and improved vibration support. The documented option is intended for official DualShock 4 and DualSense devices, not generic controllers. Vibration still depends on the controller, driver, input source, game support, and any remapping software.

Current PCSX2 Qt and Big Picture interfaces do not include a built-in input tester. The project recommends the PS2 Pad Test homebrew, linked from its controller documentation. Obtain it through that official documentation, then drag the application onto the PCSX2 window or add it to a configured games folder and launch it.
Test every face and shoulder button, Start and Select, both sticks across their full ranges, stick clicks, Analog, and vibration if applicable. This separates an emulator-wide mapping problem from a particular game’s control scheme, analog-mode requirement, port choice, or special-peripheral requirement.
Set up a second controller or multitap
For a second player, connect the other pad, return to Settings → Controllers, select Controller Port 2, and map it using the same automatic or manual process. Check that the game supports local multiplayer and uses the ports you configured; games do not all accept players in the same arrangement.

A multitap is different from a second controller: it expands one PS2 controller port into four controller slots. Enable the multitap on the port required by the game, then configure the additional slots that appear. The game must support multitap, and the port and A–D slot order can matter, so consult the game’s manual or compatibility information if players are not recognized. PCSX2’s controller documentation notes that multitapped memory cards are not currently supported.

Use a game-specific input profile
A custom input profile is useful when one title needs a different layout, such as a guitar controller or unusual arcade setup. Creating or saving a profile does not automatically apply it to a game. Assign it explicitly:
- Open the games list.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- On the Summary tab, select the profile under Input Profile.
Without that assignment, the game continues to use the shared profile. PCSX2 does not switch input profiles dynamically during gameplay.
Special controllers
Original DualShock 3 pressure sensitivity
Pressure-sensitive PS2 buttons are a special case: PCSX2 documents support for original DualShock 3 controllers, not third-party models. On Windows, install DsHidMini, set it to SXS mode, enable SDL in PCSX2, and use Automatic Mapping to select the controller’s SDL entry. On Linux and macOS, the documentation says SDL provides native support without additional software. Do not expect ordinary Xbox, DualSense, DualShock 4, or generic controllers to supply this particular pressure-sensitive input.

A mismatched wheel type can leave steering or force feedback unresponsive. A game may also lack force-feedback support for a selected wheel type even when the physical wheel supports it.
Buzz controllers on Windows
If a Buzz controller does not appear in PCSX2, the official documentation describes changing its driver in Device Manager. The device may appear under USB controllers as Standard USB HUB with a warning icon:
- Open Device Manager and locate the Buzz device.
- Right-click it and choose Update Driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list.
- Choose USB Input Device, confirm, and restart PCSX2 if needed.
Apply this only to the Buzz device, not an unrelated USB hub or controller.

Automatic Mapping is missing or does not work
First check the source: DirectInput does not offer Automatic Mapping, and SDL Raw Input requires manual mapping. Confirm the controller is connected and appears under the selected source. Try SDL first; if a compatible controller still fails there, try XInput. For a misidentified Windows controller, try SDL Raw Input, select Clear Mapping, and map it manually.

Buttons are scrambled or the controller works in the operating system but not PCSX2
Verify that PCSX2 is listening to the source where the device appears and that the mapping is assigned to the intended port. On Windows, SDL Raw Input may help with incorrect device identification, but map controls manually afterward. Also check whether another application has exclusive access or a remapping layer is translating inputs.

Analog stick or D-pad does not respond
Check for a wrong axis assignment, a missing axis, reversed directions, a dead zone, or a hardware fault. Confirm the controller is on the port the game reads, and check whether that game requires analog mode or a specific peripheral. Use PS2 Pad Test to see whether the input problem occurs outside that game.
Vibration does not work
Check that the correct motor entries are mapped, the device and driver expose vibration, and the game supports it. For official DualShock 4 or DualSense controllers, verify that enhanced SDL mode is enabled. Another input or remapping layer may also intercept the controller.
Steam seems to pause the game or open a menu
Steam Input may send keyboard commands in addition to gamepad signals, so this can look like a broken mapping. PCSX2 documents symptoms such as Circle pausing the game or Start opening its Big Picture pause menu. Try, in order:
- Fully exit Steam from the system tray.
- Disable Steam controller support.
- Change the controller’s Steam Desktop Layout so it does not emit conflicting keyboard keys.
- Change PCSX2 hotkeys that overlap with those Steam keyboard bindings.
PCSX2 crashes when a controller is connected
PCSX2 documents a known crash issue involving some third-party controller drivers that use EZFRD64.dll, often associated with C:WindowsUSB_Vibration. This is not a general controller fix. Close PCSX2 and unplug the controller before making changes, and first confirm that the driver belongs to the affected controller. The documented remedies are to remove the USB_Vibration folder or uninstall the relevant vibration-driver software through Windows’ installed-programs list and reboot. Do not delete unrelated driver files or folders.
A game-specific profile is ignored
Creating a profile is not enough. In the games list, right-click the title, open Properties → Summary, and select the profile under Input Profile.
