Open365 was an open-source project built around the idea of combining browser-based office editing with cloud file storage and collaboration. It is not a current, supported platform to deploy. Old setup guides and a surviving repository are not evidence of a maintained, secure installation path, so do not treat them as production instructions. If you want the same general experience today, use a maintained file platform such as Nextcloud, ownCloud, or Seafile with an office editor such as ONLYOFFICE Docs or Collabora Online.
What Open365 was
Open365 aimed to offer a web-based productivity workspace: users could store and share files, then edit documents in a browser using open-source software. Historical descriptions associate it with LibreOffice Online and Seafile. The goal was similar in broad outline to Office 365: access files and office tools through a web interface rather than relying only on locally installed software.
That comparison has limits. Microsoft 365 is a broad service ecosystem that can include email, calendars, meetings, identity, administration, security controls, mobile apps, and enterprise integrations. An office editor connected to cloud storage can replace some document-editing and file-sharing tasks, but it does not automatically replace that entire ecosystem.

Is Open365 still available or maintained?
Practical answer: do not choose Open365 for a new deployment. Historical and community references describe the project as inactive, and the available evidence does not establish a current release, maintained installation guide, or supported container image. The project’s repository may still be discoverable, but a repository existing online does not make its software a supported product.

Development appears to have stopped years ago; a community discussion reports a last commit in 2016, but that should be treated as historical context rather than a verified official end-of-life date. See the Open365 repository and the community discussion about its status. There is not enough evidence to recommend a current, dependable installation route.
For the same reason, do not expose an existing Open365 server to the public internet without first isolating it and reviewing its software, authentication, dependencies, and data. An inactive project may lack an ongoing patch and support process; that is an operational risk, not proof that every installation is compromised.
Why old installation instructions are unreliable
Old commands may depend on operating-system releases, package repositories, container tags, browser behavior, certificates, or integrations that have since changed or disappeared. Even if a lab installation starts, that does not establish that it can be operated safely or recovered reliably.

- Container uncertainty: an old image tag may be unavailable, unpatched, or unsuitable for a current host.
- Network and TLS problems: reverse proxies, certificates, callback URLs, and browser security rules may not match assumptions in an old guide.
- Operational gaps: backups, upgrades, authentication, monitoring, and restoration behavior may not be documented for current systems.
- Document differences: files can render or behave differently across office editors, especially when they use advanced features.
There is a meaningful distinction between reproducing Open365 in an isolated research lab and deploying it for real users. The former may be appropriate for historical study; the latter is not a sensible production recommendation. If you still have an installation, prioritize extracting and backing up files rather than trying to turn it into a public-facing service.
A modern replacement is a stack, not an Open365 download
To recreate the useful idea—file storage plus browser-based document editing—pair a maintained file platform with a separately maintained office editor. This is a new deployment, not a continuation or upgrade of Open365.

Database, persistent storage, and backupsNextcloud suits people who want a broad personal-cloud and collaboration ecosystem. ownCloud is another file collaboration platform; its documentation describes connections to office back ends including Collabora and ONLYOFFICE through WOPI. Seafile is worth considering when file synchronization and sharing are the priority, with office editing supplied by an integration. ONLYOFFICE Docs is a browser editor that integrates with platforms including Nextcloud, ownCloud, and Seafile. Collabora Online is another browser-based office editor, often a good candidate for organizations with LibreOffice-derived or ODF-centered workflows. Neither editor is universally best: test the formats and features your users rely on, check the platform integration, and review licensing and support for the exact edition you plan to run.
What you need before setting up a replacement
Plan the whole service, not just the editor container. You will need:
- A supported Linux server or managed hosting environment sized for your users and expected concurrent editing.
- A DNS name and HTTPS configuration with a certificate that participating services trust.
- A file platform, its database, and persistent storage for user files.
- An office editor reachable by users’ browsers and by the file platform.
- Network rules that allow the file platform and editor to call each other as required.
- Backups for both files and platform configuration, plus a tested restore procedure.
- Time and responsibility for updates, monitoring, security, and incident response—or a managed service that explicitly covers them.
ONLYOFFICE integration guidance emphasizes that the document server must be reachable by the file platform and end users, and that it must be able to send requests back to the file platform. A service that works only from your own browser may still fail when saving or handling callbacks. The exact resource requirements, image tags, storage mounts, authentication settings, and reverse-proxy configuration depend on the selected product versions. Follow the current installation guide for those versions rather than copying a bare sample command into a production server. Start with the ONLYOFFICE installation guides.
Set up the editor integration
- Deploy the file platform first. Complete its database, persistent storage, HTTPS, user accounts, and backup setup. Confirm that users can sign in and upload a file before adding browser editing.
- Deploy the office editor. Install ONLYOFFICE Docs or Collabora Online using the current vendor documentation. You can place the editor on the same host or a separate one, but plan ports and proxy routing so services do not conflict. A separate host can make scaling and isolation easier.
- Check the editor endpoint. Open its configured HTTPS address from a browser. For an ONLYOFFICE deployment, the
/welcomeendpoint is commonly used as a basic health check; follow the current deployment guide for the expected response. - Install the connector. Add the official integration app for your file platform. For Nextcloud or ownCloud, use the platform’s app mechanism or the connector’s official instructions. The ONLYOFFICE ownCloud guide explains its integration; the Nextcloud connector documentation covers the corresponding app.
- Configure the editor URL and security. Enter the document server’s externally reachable HTTPS URL in the connector settings. Configure JWT or the supported request-authentication mechanism where applicable. Exact menu labels vary by platform version, so use that version’s current documentation.
- Verify both directions of connectivity. Confirm that a user’s browser can reach the editor, the file platform can resolve and connect to the editor, and the editor can connect back to the file platform. Check certificates, firewall rules, proxy headers, callback URLs, and WebSocket handling if required by your configuration.
A plain Docker command can start a test service in some configurations, but it is not a complete public deployment. Internet-facing use also needs secure authentication, persistent data where applicable, TLS, a correctly configured proxy, updates, monitoring, and backups. Use the official documentation for the exact image and release you choose rather than treating an illustrative command as a production recipe.

Create, edit, and share a document
Once the integration is working, the normal workflow is straightforward:
- Sign in to the file platform and open a folder.
- Upload a DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX file, or create a supported document if your editor and connector offer that option.
- Select the file and choose its edit action. It should open in the browser editor.
- Make a small change, wait for the editor’s save indicator, close the document, and reopen it to verify that the change persisted.
- Use the file platform’s sharing controls to assign read-only or edit access. Test a shared link as a recipient before using it for important work.
Depending on the editor, connector, platform, and edition, collaboration features may include comments, Track Changes, forms, PDF editing, concurrent editing, and different co-editing modes. The file platform may provide version history separately from the editor. Do not assume that every integration exposes every feature, or that a public link has the same controls as an account-based share. Check whether guest users need accounts and whether the platform can restrict downloads or link access.
Use desktop editors and work offline
Browser editing and offline editing are separate workflows. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors are available for Windows, Linux, and macOS and can be used offline; they can also connect to supported cloud platforms. See the desktop editor project and its installation help.
Install the desktop app from an official source, connect it to your self-hosted file platform if supported, and test with a copy of a document. To check offline behavior, disconnect from the network, edit a test copy, reconnect, and verify the resulting sync and conflict behavior before relying on it for important work. Synchronization depends on the platform, client version, network, and file-conflict handling; do not assume it is seamless.
Check compatibility before migrating important files
Support for a file extension does not mean every feature will look or behave exactly as it does in Microsoft Office. Before moving a team’s daily work, test representative files in the original application and in the new editor. Include:
- DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and the ODT, ODS, and ODP formats if your organization uses them.
- Macro-enabled workbooks and files with external data links.
- Complex spreadsheets with pivot tables, charts, formulas, or conditional formatting.
- Documents with embedded fonts, tracked changes, templates, or intricate page layouts.
- Presentations with animations, embedded media, or unusual fonts.
- PDFs and forms, if editing those in the browser is part of the intended workflow.
ONLYOFFICE emphasizes compatibility with DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX, and its documentation lists additional formats. Treat that as support and compatibility intent, not a guarantee of complete Microsoft Office parity or byte-for-byte equivalence.
Recover and migrate files from an old Open365 installation
The available evidence does not establish a supported Open365-to-modern-platform migration tool or an in-place upgrade. Plan for a cautious file-level recovery instead:
- Restrict the old server to a trusted internal network or VPN while you assess it; do not leave it exposed just to make migration convenient.
- Take a full storage snapshot or read-only backup before making changes. Preserve original files and, where possible, filenames, extensions, and timestamps.
- Export or copy user files, then test a representative sample in the new platform and editor before importing everything.
- Check sharing permissions, group membership, shared links, and any collaborative revision history separately. Do not assume those will transfer with the files.
- Recreate accounts and groups deliberately, and decide how old identities map to new ones.
- Keep the original backup until users have checked the migrated files and access. Establish and test the new platform’s backup and restore process before production cutover.
- Review old credentials and tokens, rotate anything that might have been exposed, and retire the old server only after recovery and access are confirmed.
Troubleshooting common integration problems
The editor does not load
Check the document-server URL, DNS resolution, HTTPS certificate chain, and firewall rules. Confirm that the URL works from both the browser and the file platform. If TLS terminates at a reverse proxy, review its routing and any WebSocket handling required by the editor. A browser mixed-content error can occur if one service generates an HTTP URL while the page is served over HTTPS.
The document opens read-only
Check the user’s file permissions first. Then confirm that the connector is configured correctly and that the file type supports editing in the installed editor. A lock held by another process, an edition or licensing restriction, or a failed save callback can also affect editing. Check the product’s current limits rather than assuming all features are available in every edition.
The document will not save
Saving often depends on the editor calling back to the file platform. Check connectivity in that direction, the editor and platform logs, proxy timeouts, file ownership and permissions, available disk space, database health, TLS validation, and JWT or other authentication configuration. If the problem appears only during simultaneous editing, test whether another session has locked the file and review the platform’s conflict behavior.
It works inside the network but not from outside
Look for a wrong public URL, NAT or firewall rules, split-horizon DNS, missing proxy headers, a self-signed certificate, or an internal container hostname being published instead of the public hostname. Also verify that callback URLs use HTTPS and can be reached from the editor’s network.
Formatting changed
Compare the document in its original application and the replacement editor. Investigate fonts, macros, charts, pivot tables, embedded objects, external data connections, Track Changes, page layout, and PowerPoint transitions. Keep an untouched original for files where those features matter.

Self-hosting gives you control over data location, storage, identity choices, network boundaries, and backup design. It can also let you combine existing infrastructure with open-source software. In exchange, you are responsible for updates, certificates, monitoring, capacity, incident response, and restoration. “Free” software does not make the server, storage, support, or administration free.
If you do not want to operate the file platform and editor, compare managed hosting or hosted editor services. Before choosing one, check where data is stored, what backups and restores are included, how users and sharing are controlled, what formats and features are supported, and how you can export your data. For commercial or hosted offerings, verify current pricing, plan names, license terms, and limits directly with the provider.
Which alternative should you choose?
- Choose Nextcloud or ownCloud with ONLYOFFICE Docs if you want a self-hosted file platform with browser editing and your users mainly work with common Microsoft Office formats. Test complex files before committing.
- Choose a platform with Collabora Online if your workflow favors LibreOffice-derived behavior or ODF, and the integration fits your platform and support needs.
- Consider Seafile with an office editor if file synchronization and sharing are central, and you are comfortable treating the editor as a separately configured service.
- Choose a managed office or productivity service if your organization needs vendor support or a wider bundle of identity, email, meetings, and administration than a self-hosted file platform and editor provide.
Open365 was an early attempt at the self-hosted cloud-office idea, but it is not a suitable modern installation target. Build a new stack from maintained components, test the documents and collaboration features that matter to you, and treat backups, security, and support as part of the deployment—not as extras.
