Choose LibreCAD for free, open-source 2D drafting; choose QCAD Community Edition if you prefer QCAD’s free GPLv3 core; choose QCAD Professional when DWG exchange, extended DXF support, automation, or commercial support matters. “QCAD” is a product family, not one edition: its free Community Edition differs from paid Professional, and QCAD/CAM adds toolpath and G-code features. For ordinary 2D plans and drawings, either LibreCAD or QCAD can be enough. For complex AutoCAD files, test your actual drawings before committing to any alternative.

All three standard CAD options are aimed at 2D drafting. They cover familiar work such as lines, arcs, circles, polylines, text, dimensions, hatches, layers, and object snaps. The more useful distinction is what happens around that drawing canvas: licensing, supported file versions, automation, libraries, and whether you need CAM.
LibreCAD describes itself as free and open-source software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. QCAD’s product line comprises the free Community Edition, paid Professional, and QCAD/CAM. See the LibreCAD site and QCAD product overview.
They are related, but they are not the same program
LibreCAD began as a fork of QCAD Community Edition. That shared history explains why the applications have familiar 2D CAD concepts, but it does not make current versions interchangeable. The projects have developed separately, and their interfaces, packaging, licensing, and file-format behavior differ. LibreCAD is GPLv2; QCAD’s open-source core is GPLv3-based with exceptions, while Professional adds proprietary plugins. What changes between QCAD editions?
QCAD Community Edition is the open-source core. QCAD’s download instructions allow users to remove the Professional trial add-on from the package to use the reduced free edition, or to compile from source. The trial runs for 15 minutes at a time before it can be restarted. That packaging can make QCAD appear paid-only at first, but the free edition exists; it simply does not include the full Professional feature set. Check the official download instructions.
QCAD Professional adds proprietary plugins, including the dedicated DWG plugin, extended DXF support, improved spline and polyline functionality, and additional tools. Its documented features also include scripting, command-line utilities, and a parts library. It is the edition to evaluate if production work depends on broader exchange formats or time-saving conversion and automation.
QCAD/CAM adds CAM capabilities for making toolpaths and machine instructions. A CAD drawing is not automatically a safe, machine-ready toolpath: you still need the correct units, machine setup, tool parameters, post-processing, and a valid contour. The QCAD product page distinguishes the CAD products from CAM.
DXF and DWG: the practical difference
For ordinary 2D DXF drawings, LibreCAD and QCAD are both reasonable candidates. Version and entity support still matter. QCAD’s feature list says Community Edition supports DXF 2000, while Professional supports a wider set of DXF/DWG versions. LibreCAD documents DXF workflows and conversion tools, but that should not be read as a promise to preserve every entity in every file. Consult the QCAD feature list and LibreCAD documentation.
For DWG, QCAD Professional is the safer first choice when compatibility is a business requirement: QCAD explicitly sells a DWG plugin and publishes supported version information. LibreCAD’s official project materials also describe DWG capabilities, so it is too broad to say LibreCAD cannot work with DWG. The important difference is that availability of a format feature is not the same as reliable preservation of a complex production file.

DWG files can contain proxy objects, dynamic blocks, annotations, external references, custom fonts, paper-space layouts, and discipline-specific or proprietary entities. A CAD program may open such a file while substituting, flattening, omitting, or changing some content. Read support, write support, version support, entity coverage, and round-trip fidelity are separate questions.
Test a representative file before switching
- Keep an untouched copy of a real project file.
- Open it in the candidate application and compare geometry position, scale, layers, lineweights, and linetypes.
- Inspect text fonts and alignment, dimension styles, hatches, blocks, and attributes.
- Check layouts, viewports, and external references if the drawing uses them.
- Save a copy in the format your collaborators need, then reopen it in the originating CAD system.
- Compare the reopened file with the original. Do not make a production decision based only on whether the file opened.
For new shared drawings, agree on a DXF version with collaborators. Keep originals and treat conversion as a controlled step, particularly for CNC or fabrication work.

Tools, workflow, and learning
LibreCAD offers the core 2D drafting tools, cross-platform availability, and a no-cost, open-source model. Its project lists more than 30 language translations and publishes command-line DXF conversion examples, including:

QCAD’s documented feature set includes layers and blocks, tabs for multiple documents, object snaps, printing to scale and across multiple pages, construction and modification tools, a parts library with more than 4,800 CAD parts, ECMAScript/JavaScript scripting, and command-line utilities such as dwg2pdf, dwg2svg, and dwg2bmp. There is no well-supported universal answer to which one is easier to learn. Someone who knows one conventional 2D CAD system may recognize concepts in the other, but precision in either depends on understanding coordinates, units, snaps, layers, entity properties, and print scale—not just finding buttons. QCAD’s broader documented tools and library may suit users building a more extensive workflow; LibreCAD may suit someone who wants a no-cost drafting tool and does not need those additions.

Check model-space and paper-space expectations, DXF export settings, and possible font or linetype substitutions when sharing drawings.
Which fits common jobs?
Floor plans
Either application can handle a basic 2D plan made from lines, arcs, text, dimensions, and hatches. LibreCAD is a sensible fit if the plan stays in DXF or PDF and cost is decisive. QCAD Professional may be a better fit if you need its parts library, conversion features, or exchange with DWG users. Neither is a BIM application: do not expect the building-object data, schedules, or 3D coordination of software designed for BIM.
Mechanical drafting
For simple 2D plates, brackets, cut patterns, and dimensioned drawings, either may be sufficient. QCAD Professional’s broader format support, additional spline and polyline functions, scripting, and batch-oriented tools can matter when files move through a commercial workflow. LibreCAD can be enough for straightforward drawings and legacy DXF editing. Neither is a replacement for a parametric 3D mechanical CAD system when you need feature-based models or assemblies.
CNC and laser preparation
Separate drawing from toolpath generation. LibreCAD or QCAD can be used to create clean 2D geometry; QCAD/CAM is the QCAD product to consider when you also need CAM functions and G-code output. Before sending geometry downstream, check for open contours, duplicate or overlapping entities, self-intersections, incorrect units, construction lines, and unexpected polyline bulges. Confirm origin placement and any layer-color conventions required by your CAM software. Tool compensation and machine safety depend on the CAM and machine workflow, not merely on the drawing application.

Students, hobbyists, and Linux users
LibreCAD’s zero license cost makes it a strong starting point for students, makers, and occasional 2D drafting. QCAD Community Edition is another free option if you prefer its ecosystem and can work within its format and feature limits. On Linux, check the package version rather than assuming the distribution repository has the newest upstream build; LibreCAD notes that distribution packages may lag. Also confirm whether a QCAD package is Community Edition or includes Professional components.
Mac users, including Apple Silicon
Both projects offer macOS packages, but packaging details matter. QCAD provides Apple Silicon builds. LibreCAD’s project warns that macOS arm64 builds may be unsigned and documents a workaround for macOS’s “damaged” warning. That warning is a signing and packaging issue, not by itself proof the software cannot run; obtain installers from the official project source and understand the security implications before bypassing a macOS warning. LibreCAD has no license price, subscription, or annual fee, though users may still spend on hardware, training, support, or time resolving compatibility issues. QCAD Community Edition is free. QCAD Professional is commercial and, according to the vendor’s customer documentation, the license is perpetual: the installed version remains usable after the included update period. One year of download/update access is included; access to new versions can later be renewed with a 30% update discount. See QCAD’s customer-area documentation.
The official shop listed QCAD Professional at $48 and QCAD/CAM at $128 during the research check on August 16–18, 2026. These are dated price snapshots, not guaranteed current prices; currency conversion, tax treatment, promotions, and regional terms may vary. Verify the Professional shop page or QCAD/CAM shop page before buying. Do not read the Professional price as an annual subscription.
For licensing-sensitive redistribution, plugin development, or commercial embedding, read the actual license terms rather than relying on a shorthand label. LibreCAD is GPLv2; QCAD Community Edition is GPLv3-based with exceptions; QCAD Professional includes proprietary components.

Versions and system considerations
Version labels and package maturity affect what you install. The QCAD download page showed version 3.32.9 during the August 2026 research check, with Qt 6 packages recommended where available and Qt 5 or legacy packages for older systems. Its current packages list Windows 10 and 11 64-bit support, Intel and Apple Silicon macOS packages, and Linux builds. Older packages are not automatically the best choice for a new installation; check the download page for your operating system.
LibreCAD’s project lists distinct branches rather than one undifferentiated “latest” build: 2.2.2 requires Qt 6.4 or newer and is described as an alpha/latest-build line; 2.2.1 requires Qt 5.15 or newer, while the 2.2 branch requires Qt 5.2.1 or newer. The project describes 2.2.1.x as another current build line. Verify the precise build and its maturity before relying on it for production. See LibreCAD’s branch and build notes.
QCAD’s published minimum system requirements are broad and dated; actual needs depend on operating system and drawing complexity. They are not performance benchmarks. More practically, on Linux check package age and Qt integration, and on macOS check the package architecture and signing situation.

Look elsewhere if your job requires parametric 3D modeling, advanced assemblies, BIM data, enterprise collaboration, or near-complete fidelity for complex AutoCAD production drawings. FreeCAD is a candidate for open-source parametric 3D CAD; Onshape is a browser-based collaborative parametric CAD platform; AutoCAD LT, BricsCAD, and DraftSight are commercial options to investigate for DWG-centered drafting. They are not direct equivalents, and their current pricing, capabilities, and terms should be checked independently.
Bottom line: choose by workflow, not by name
- Best fully free 2D drafting option: LibreCAD, especially for straightforward DXF-oriented work.
- Best free option in the QCAD family: QCAD Community Edition, if its limits fit your workflow.
- Best candidate here for DWG-centered work: QCAD Professional, because its vendor documents a dedicated DWG plugin and broader format support. Pilot it with real files before relying on it.
- Best QCAD-family option when you need toolpaths: QCAD/CAM.
- Best for 3D or BIM requirements: choose a product designed for those workflows instead.
If failure to preserve a drawing could cost you time or money, evaluate a representative file through a complete open-edit-save-reopen cycle before standardizing on any application.
