Zoom in makes something appear larger and shows less of it; zoom out makes it appear smaller and shows more of it. The exact effect depends on what you’re viewing: a webpage, photo, map, camera preview, or the whole screen.
Zoom in vs. zoom out at a glance

A simple analogy: binoculars make a distant subject seem closer, like zooming in; stepping back to see more of a scene is like zooming out. In either case, the subject’s apparent size changes, but that does not necessarily mean the original file or object has changed.
How to zoom on a computer
Many apps have + and − buttons: plus usually zooms in, and minus usually zooms out. Other controls include a slider, mouse wheel, menu command, or keyboard shortcut. These conventions are common, not universal; look for the app’s own controls if a shortcut does nothing.

On the desktop version of Chrome, use Ctrl + + to zoom in and Ctrl + − to zoom out on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS. On a Mac, use Command + + and Command + −. You can also open Chrome’s three-dot menu and use the controls beside Zoom. Chrome supports zoom settings for individual sites as well as a general browser setting. The exact interface can change; see Chrome’s current zoom instructions.

Browser zoom changes how the webpage is displayed, not necessarily the underlying image or site. Text may wrap differently, columns may rearrange, and some controls may move. Zoom in if text or controls are too small; zoom out if a page feels cramped or requires too much horizontal scrolling. If you only need larger text, a font-size or accessibility setting may preserve more of the page layout.
On a phone or tablet
Many touchscreen apps let you zoom with a two-finger gesture. In many photo and map apps, spread two fingers apart to zoom in and pinch them together to zoom out. Gestures vary by app and device, though; for example, official guidance does not describe every app’s pinch behavior the same way. If the gesture is unclear, use the visible plus/minus buttons or the app’s help.

Zooming on a map
On a map, zooming changes the scale of the view:
- Zoom in to see a smaller geographic area more closely, such as nearby roads or buildings.
- Zoom out to see a larger area, such as more of a city or region.
Maps commonly use plus/minus buttons, mouse-wheel scrolling, or touch gestures. Some also accept keyboard shortcuts; for example, Bing Maps documents plus or equals for zooming in and minus or underscore for zooming out. Map behavior is app-specific.

Zooming out can make nearby detail disappear; that is often an intentional change in what the map displays. Mapbox describes zoom levels from 0 through 22 in its own system, with lower levels showing very broad areas and higher levels showing more local detail. That range is Mapbox-specific, not a universal scale. See its zoom-level guide.

Zoom is not pan. Zoom changes scale. Panning moves the view across the map—north, south, east, or west—while generally keeping the same scale. If you are zoomed in on the right area but cannot see a nearby street, drag the map to pan. An app may center a zoom around your cursor, selected point, or fingers, so the center does not always stay fixed. Apple’s MapKit documentation describes zooming through the map’s visible region and distinguishes it from changing the center position.
Zooming photos, images, and documents
In an image viewer or document, zoom in to inspect a portion more closely; zoom out to fit more of the page or image on screen. Ordinary viewing zoom does not usually edit the original file. It is different from:

- Cropping: selecting and removing or excluding the outer parts of an image.
- Resizing: changing an image’s pixel dimensions, often when editing or exporting a copy.
- Panning: moving around a zoomed-in view without changing its scale.
Zooming in can make existing detail easier to see, but it cannot reliably recover information that was never captured. Enlarge a low-resolution raster image too far and its pixels may become visible or the image may look soft. Zooming out does not, by itself, create a smaller-resolution copy. Autodesk similarly notes that zooming a map image changes its displayed magnification, not its resolution; see its map-image guidance.
Camera zoom is a different case
A camera’s zoom control changes how much of the scene fills the frame, but the method depends on the device. Optical zoom uses the camera’s optics to change framing. Digital zoom enlarges or crops the image electronically and can make quality look worse, depending on the source resolution and processing. A camera may use optical zoom, digital zoom, or both.

Moving the camera closer or farther away is not exactly the same as changing its focal length from the same position: moving changes perspective and the apparent relationship between near and distant objects. If image quality matters, check whether the camera has optical zoom and be cautious about enlarging beyond its optical range.
Zooming versus screen magnification
App or page zoom changes the scale of a particular webpage, document, image, or map. An operating-system screen magnifier or display-scaling setting can enlarge more of the interface—or the entire screen—and may be more useful if you need larger controls across multiple apps. Browser zoom, for example, changes the webpage; a system magnifier can also enlarge browser menus and other on-screen elements.
Does “zoom” mean the Zoom meeting app?
Usually, “zoom in” and “zoom out” are generic instructions, not a reference to Zoom Workplace. In Zoom’s Web App, Ctrl + + and Ctrl + − can zoom shared content in or out. That changes how shared content appears on screen; it does not necessarily change the framing of a participant’s camera. Camera controls depend on the webcam, camera software, or supported camera hardware. See Zoom’s shared-content shortcut guidance and its information on far-end control for supported PTZ cameras.

If zoom is not working or you went too far
- Make sure the right app or content has focus. A shortcut may affect the browser, document, or shared-content window that is active—not the map or image you meant to change.
- Try the visible controls. Use the app’s plus/minus buttons or zoom slider if the keyboard shortcut is unknown.
- Check the zoom limit. Some apps stop at a minimum or maximum scale.
- Reset the view. Look for a default zoom, fit-to-screen, fit-to-page, or map reset control. In a browser, returning to 100% is a common way to restore the page’s usual scale.
- Choose another kind of enlargement if needed. If the goal is to make everything easier to read, try system display scaling or a screen magnifier rather than repeatedly zooming individual pages.
