JK sta per just kidding, cioè “sto scherzando”, “scherzo” o “era una battuta”. Nelle chat e sui social si usa per segnalare che la frase appena scritta non va presa alla lettera. È slang informale inglese: “Media” non fa parte dell’acronimo.
Che cosa vuol dire JK?
Le lettere corrispondono a just (“solo”) e kidding (“scherzare”). La traduzione letterale è “sto solo scherzando”, ma in italiano la resa più naturale dipende dalla frase: spesso bastano “scherzo”, “scherzavo” o “era una battuta”. Nel gergo digitale inglese, JK segnala che il messaggio precedente è ironico, giocoso o comunque non del tutto letterale. Non significa necessariamente che ogni dettaglio di ciò che è stato scritto sia falso.
È un’abbreviazione informale che si incontra in SMS, chat, commenti, forum, videogiochi e social. Uno studio sul linguaggio abbreviato nei social include jk tra le abbreviazioni usate nella comunicazione digitale con il significato di just kidding (studio sullo slang digitale).
Come si usa in una conversazione?
Di solito JK si riferisce alla frase immediatamente precedente. Può stare alla fine del messaggio, subito dopo un’affermazione ambigua oppure in un messaggio separato per correggere il tono:

- Alla fine: “You’re impossible, jk.” — “Sei impossibile, scherzo.”
- Subito dopo la battuta: “I’m blocking you. JK!” — “Ti blocco. Scherzavo!”
- Come messaggio separato: “JK 😂” — “Scherzo 😂”; normalmente chiarisce il messaggio appena inviato.
Può accompagnare un’esagerazione, una presa in giro affettuosa, una finta indignazione o il sarcasmo. Il significato dipende anche dal contesto, dal rapporto tra le persone e dal tono complessivo: l’acronimo non sempre basta a far capire come una frase è stata intesa.
Esempi di JK con traduzione
- “I’m never talking to you again, jk.” — “Non ti parlerò mai più, scherzo.”
- “You’re the worst… jk 😂” — “Sei il peggiore… scherzo 😂”
- “I hate this song. JK, it’s actually great.” — “Odio questa canzone. Scherzavo: in realtà è fantastica.”
- “That was the best presentation ever. JK, it was fine.” — “È stata la presentazione migliore di sempre. Scherzo, è andata bene.”
- “I’m quitting my job tomorrow, lol jk.” — “Domani mi licenzio, ahah, scherzo.”
Negli ultimi due esempi JK ridimensiona l’affermazione o rivela il tono giocoso; non è una formula magica che rende automaticamente chiaro o innocuo qualsiasi messaggio.

JK, LOL e “just joking”: che differenza c’è?

Si possono combinare, come in “lol jk”, ma è JK a segnalare più chiaramente la natura scherzosa o non letterale della frase. Se il destinatario potrebbe non conoscere l’abbreviazione, scrivere “I’m joking” o una spiegazione diretta è più chiaro.

Può essere aggiunto a sarcasmo e prese in giro, ma non cancella l’effetto di un insulto, di una battuta discriminatoria o di un commento aggressivo. Chi legge può comunque sentirsi ferito o pensare che l’autore stia ritrattando dopo aver detto qualcosa di serio. L’intenzione dichiarata e l’impatto sul destinatario non sono sempre la stessa cosa.

Se una frase riguarda salute, sicurezza, denaro o lavoro, oppure potrebbe essere interpretata come una minaccia o un’offesa, è meglio non affidarsi a JK per chiarirla. In un contesto delicato conviene dire esplicitamente che si trattava di una battuta, oppure riformulare il messaggio in modo inequivocabile.
Si scrive JK, jk o J/K?
Le forme JK, jk e J/K (anche j/k) sono riconoscibili. La barra è una variante grafica, oggi meno tipica; maiuscole e minuscole sono flessibili nell’uso informale. Non c’è una grafia unica da considerare obbligatoria per le chat.

Conviene usarlo in italiano?
Può funzionare in una conversazione amichevole con persone che conoscono lo slang inglese, per esempio in una chat di gioco o su un social internazionale. Non tutti gli utenti italiani lo capiscono, però. Se vuoi essere chiaro con un pubblico generico, “scherzo”, “sto scherzando” o “era una battuta” sono alternative più immediate.

JK è poco adatto a email professionali, comunicazioni con clienti o superiori, documenti ufficiali e testi accademici: in quei contesti è preferibile formulare il significato per esteso o evitare l’ambiguità.

JK può voler dire altro?
Sì. Fuori dalle chat, le stesse lettere possono essere iniziali, sigle o abbreviazioni riferite a persone, luoghi, organizzazioni o concetti tecnici. Tra gli esempi riportati per altri contesti ci sono Jedi Knight, Jammu e Kashmir, Jakarta e il flip-flop JK in elettronica digitale (altri significati di JK; voce lessicografica inglese). In una battuta o in una conversazione informale il significato più probabile è just kidding; in un testo tecnico o geografico bisogna guardare al contesto.
