There is no single best social media listening tool for every team. Sprout Social is a strong fit when listening needs to sit alongside publishing and engagement; Brandwatch suits enterprise consumer research; Meltwater is built for teams combining social listening with media intelligence; and YouScan stands out for visual listening. The right choice depends on what sources you need, how far back you need data, and whether your team must act on findings inside the same platform.

What social listening does—and what it does not
Monitoring finds mentions and can alert you. Listening analyzes conversations around a brand, product, competitor, or topic to reveal patterns, sentiment, recurring questions, and emerging issues. Social analytics usually measures performance on channels your organization owns. Social media management covers publishing, scheduling, approvals, inboxes, and engagement. Some platforms combine these jobs, but a feature labelled “listening” does not guarantee deep consumer research.

The goal is action: improve a product, answer a customer, brief communications, or investigate a possible crisis. Mention, for example, describes monitoring across social media and the web and lists sentiment and share-of-voice analysis among its capabilities (Mention pricing).

Which tool fits your use case?
Sprout Social: best when listening belongs in the social team’s daily workflow
Sprout combines publishing, engagement, reporting, analytics, and collaboration. Its Listening add-on includes keyword and location monitoring, sentiment tracking and scoring, machine-learning-powered filters, and Spike Alerts, according to its pricing page. That makes it a practical shortlist choice for social teams that need to move from a mention to a response or content decision without stitching together several products.
The trade-off is packaging: listening is an add-on to Standard and higher plans, and the listed prices are per seat. Model the cost for the number of users who need access, not just the person who administers the account. Sprout advertises a 30-day trial without a credit card, but confirm whether the trial includes the listening features you intend to evaluate.
Brandwatch: best for enterprise consumer intelligence and deep historical research
Brandwatch Consumer Research is aimed at analyzing brands, products, competitors, and market trends at scale. Brandwatch says the product can search more than 1.4 trillion posts dating back to 2008 and receives 496 million new posts daily; these are vendor-reported figures, not independently audited measures. The company also describes AI-powered search and analysis, custom classifiers, and image analysis using neural networks and deep learning (Brandwatch Consumer Research).

This type of platform is worth considering when historical baselines, complex queries, or large-scale research are central to the work. It is likely more than a small business needs for occasional alerts, and purchasing is demo-led. Ask which sources, dates, and post types are actually available for your geography and use case; a large archive claim does not mean every network is equally searchable.
Meltwater: best for PR and media monitoring alongside social listening
Meltwater is a natural candidate for communications teams that need social conversations and wider media intelligence in a connected workflow. Its social listening product is positioned for social insight and PR-related use cases. Before a demo, specify whether you also need news, blogs, broadcast or other media sources, and ask how those results connect to social reporting, alerts, and executive summaries.
Pricing is quote-based. Verify historical lookback, source-level coverage, alert latency, and regional availability in writing rather than assuming that broad media monitoring includes every social source or post type you need.
Rank #2
YouScan: best for visual listening and image/logo analysis
YouScan is a strong candidate when logos or products appear in photos without a text mention—for example, in retail, food and beverage, travel, sports sponsorships, or influencer content. Its pricing page describes Visual Insights as an add-on analyzing images from more than 500,000 sources, and says higher-tier collection can use image contents such as brand logos. It also lists aspect sentiment analysis and trend detection on Starter, along with unlimited rules and alerts and integrations with Slack, Microsoft Teams, or WhatsApp (one integration per account) (YouScan pricing).
The listed Starter plan is $499 per month billed annually, with three topics and up to 15,000 monthly mentions; Unlimited is demo-led. Test logo detection with ordinary, imperfect customer images—not just clean product shots—and inspect false positives before using counts in a report.
Hootsuite Social OS: best for teams already using Hootsuite
Hootsuite organizes its current offering around publishing, messaging/customer care, and Lumen social listening and insights. Its plans page lists brand and competitor monitoring on Standard, support for up to 10 social accounts on that plan, and advanced listening across social, digital, and AI for Enterprise. It also advertises a 14-day trial without a credit card.
This can make sense when publishing, care, collaboration, and listening should remain in the existing Hootsuite workflow. Confirm exactly what “monitoring” means at your tier, which sources and history are included, and whether the advanced listening functions in your evaluation require Enterprise.
Mention: best for monitoring, Boolean search, and alerts without a publishing requirement
Mention lists real-time monitoring across major social networks and the web, including news, blogs, forums, and review sites. Its Company plan includes access to more than 75 review sites, and its page lists competitor benchmarking, share of voice, influence scoring, audience insights, and sentiment. Advanced Boolean queries can use AND, OR, and NOT, with queries up to 2,000 characters (Mention pricing).
Check the current plan carefully: historical data and API access are paid add-ons, Company pricing is custom, and Mention says publishing and responding features are being progressively deprecated, pointing users to Agorapulse for those workflows. If you need a single product for scheduling and listening, this change matters.
Brand24 and Awario: candidates for simpler monitoring
Smaller teams may not need an enterprise intelligence platform. Brand24 and Awario are worth checking for straightforward mention discovery and alerts, but verify current prices, source coverage, query limits, historical lookback, review-site support, exports, and alert delivery on their official pages (Brand24; Awario). Do not assume a lower-complexity product provides the same historical depth, visual recognition, governance, or API access as an enterprise research platform.
Sprinklr Insights: best for large customer-experience organizations
Sprinklr is designed for enterprise-scale social intelligence connected to wider customer experience and operational workflows (Sprinklr Insights). Its governance and integration scope may suit large organizations with defined teams and processes, but a sales-led, complex platform can be a poor fit for a small business that only needs mention alerts. Ask about implementation, user roles, data access, and who will own the day-to-day listening operation.
How to evaluate source coverage
Never treat “supports social media” as a complete coverage statement. For every source that matters—Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, Pinterest, Threads, news, blogs, forums, reviews, podcasts, video, and public websites—ask what the product can actually retrieve:
- Posts, comments, captions, hashtags, mentions, profile details, or only URLs?
- Public content only, or any additional content permitted by the source’s access rules?
- Text and metadata only, or images, video frames, and text embedded in images?
- How far back does the source go, and is historical retrieval complete, sampled, or separately priced?
- How quickly does content appear: seconds, minutes, hourly, or later?
- Does coverage vary by country, language, plan, or account type?
Platform APIs and privacy settings limit what vendors can collect. Private accounts, deleted content, and some posts or comments may be inaccessible. A tool may support a network while exposing only selected public post types or metadata. YouScan says its Starter plan covers supported social, blog, forum, review, and online news sources, with up to 15,000 monthly mentions; Mention lists social and web sources and more than 75 review sites for Company. Those descriptions are useful starting points, not guarantees that every item on each source is available.
Historical data can matter more than a polished dashboard
If you are benchmarking a campaign, researching a category, or establishing a pre-crisis baseline, ask how much history the product can retrieve before you compare interfaces. Find out whether the archive applies to each source, whether old data is included in the subscription, whether it is sampled, and whether you can inspect and export raw posts or only aggregate metrics. Mention says historical data is not included in its Company plan and is available as a paid add-on (Mention pricing).
Request a search for a known campaign or event at one month, one year, and—if relevant—three years back. Compare the returned post-level evidence with a period you already know. A historical archive is valuable only if the relevant sources and content types are present and the data is usable for your analysis.

Sentiment, share of voice, and AI: treat outputs as evidence to inspect
Automated sentiment is an estimate, not ground truth. Sarcasm, slang, negation, short posts, mixed opinions, ordinary words used as brand names, and multilingual or code-switched language can all mislead a classifier. Images and memes may carry meaning absent from the text. Sprout lists sentiment tracking and scoring in Listening; YouScan lists aspect sentiment; Brandwatch describes custom classifiers and AI-powered analysis. These features are not directly comparable without evaluating them on your own content.
Use sentiment as a directional signal and validate high-impact conclusions against the underlying posts. Check whether a vendor supports manual correction, confidence scores, language-specific models, custom classifiers, or human review. Inspect positive, negative, sarcastic, mixed, non-English, and image-led examples; do not rely on an accuracy percentage unless the vendor explains the test set and method.
Share of voice also depends on methodology. One product may compare raw mention volume, another estimated reach, engagement, or media exposure. Confirm the denominator, sources, date range, and whether paid, owned, and earned content are mixed. A competitor ranking is meaningful only when the method and coverage are comparable.
Boolean queries: reduce noise before trusting the charts
Boolean search helps distinguish a brand from an ordinary word and isolate relevant complaints, product discussion, or campaign conversation. Exact operators and syntax vary by platform; Mention documents AND, OR, and NOT, but do not assume every tool supports the same operators, wildcards, proximity rules, or filters.
("brand name" OR product-name OR @brandhandle)
AND (broken OR refund OR defective OR complaint)
NOT (job OR careers OR giveaway)
Build exclusions for common false positives, use exact phrases where appropriate, and test misspellings, hashtags, handles, competitor names, languages, and generic terms. A company called “Shell,” “Apple,” or “Target,” for example, may otherwise pull in unrelated conversations. Review the actual posts returned; a tidy dashboard cannot repair a bad query.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVisual listening, alerts, and reporting
Visual listening can identify logos or products in image-led posts where the caption omits the brand. YouScan describes image analysis and logo-based collection, while Brandwatch describes image analysis powered by neural networks and deep learning, trained on billions of images—a vendor claim (Brandwatch). Ask if the feature analyzes logos, products, scenes, video frames, or text inside images, whether it is an add-on, and how users review false detections.
Best Value
Alerts can flag mention volume or sentiment spikes, keywords, high-reach authors, or crisis terms. Sprout lists custom Spike Alerts; YouScan lists unlimited alert rules on Starter and integrations with Slack, Microsoft Teams, or WhatsApp; Mention offers email or desktop push notifications. Delivery speed and routing can differ by source and plan. Suppress duplicates and agree on who owns each alert, what constitutes an escalation, and which response playbook applies. Alerts without named owners and severity thresholds create noise, not crisis readiness.
Reporting should let a stakeholder move from a chart to the source posts and see how a number was produced. Check custom dashboards, scheduled and white-label reports, share links, PDF/CSV exports, API access, BI connections, data retention, role-based permissions, and raw-post access. Sprout lists external share links for listening insights and API access on Advanced; YouScan lists exports and API access on Unlimited; Mention says API access is a paid add-on. Ask whether the export contains underlying records or only aggregate figures.
Listening platform or social media management suite?
| Choose a management suite with listening when… | Choose a dedicated listening platform when… |
|---|---|
| Your team needs publishing, scheduling, approvals, inbox management, customer care, reporting, and monitoring in one place. | Your core work is consumer research, broad web/media coverage, long historical analysis, complex Boolean queries, custom classifiers, image intelligence, or API-driven analysis. |
| Sprout Social or Hootsuite may fit, depending on the team’s existing workflow and the depth of listening required. | Brandwatch, Meltwater, YouScan, or Sprinklr may fit, depending on whether the priority is intelligence, PR, visual listening, or enterprise CX. |
Do not buy a publishing suite expecting it to deliver the historical depth of a research platform, or buy a powerful listening tool assuming it includes a social inbox and approvals. Sprout Social’s main plans include publishing and engagement, while Listening is an add-on; Hootsuite combines operating workflows with Lumen listening and insights. Brandwatch Consumer Research focuses on consumer intelligence. Choose around the work you need done.

What social listening costs—and what to include in the quote
There is no useful universal price band for this category: some tools publish per-seat prices, while enterprise products are quote-based and may package data, support, or features differently. Public prices are also often tied to annual billing. As of the vendor pages observed August 18, 2026, Sprout listed $199/$299/$399 per seat/month for its three named tiers, with Listening as an add-on; Hootsuite listed $99/$199/$399 per user/month and custom Enterprise pricing; YouScan listed Starter at $499/month billed annually. Mention Company is custom-priced. Confirm each current offer directly.
Compare total cost for identical requirements, including:
- Seats, brands, workspaces, topics, queries, and monthly mention limits
- Listening add-ons, visual analysis, historical retrieval, and extra data sources
- API access, exports, dashboards, and integrations
- Onboarding, consulting, support, and training
- Security features such as SSO, audit logs, and data residency
- Contract length, annual versus monthly billing, taxes, and renewal terms
“Unlimited mentions” does not necessarily mean unlimited historical retrieval, full-fidelity data, or unrestricted exports. Ask vendors to put limits and add-on costs in the quote.
A practical evaluation process before you buy
- Define the job. Decide whether you need monitoring, analysis, publishing, or all three. List brands, competitors, markets, languages, expected monthly volume, users, and who will act on findings.
- Write five real queries. Create one each for brand mentions, product complaints, competitor comparison, category trends, and reputation or crisis risk. Include handles, hashtags, misspellings, generic terms, and exclusions.
- Test false-positive controls. Run the same terms in each finalist and inspect the returned posts. Record irrelevant results, missed variants, duplicate handling, and whether query changes are easy to manage.
- Test source coverage. For your priority networks and web sources, confirm post-level results and the content available—posts, comments, captions, images, or metadata. Ask the vendor to explain gaps by source and country.
- Test history. Search a known campaign or crisis at one month, one year, and three years back if that depth matters. Record completeness, sampling, delay, source limits, and extra cost.
- Validate sentiment manually. Inspect positive, negative, sarcastic, mixed, non-English, and image-led results. Look for correction tools and evidence behind automated summaries.
- Test alerts and reports. Confirm latency, duplicate suppression, routing, escalation, and whether alerts link to the original post. Build the same report in each finalist: volume, sentiment, share of voice, themes, authors, geography, trend, underlying posts, and export.
- Request comparable written quotes. Give every vendor the same counts for brands, topics, users, monthly mentions, lookback, API, visual analysis, reports, support, and contract term. Compare full cost and included features, not the headline subscription.
Recommendations by team type
- Solo marketer or small business: Start with a lower-complexity monitoring product such as Brand24, Mention, or Awario, after checking present limits. If mentions are rare, native platform searches, review alerts, and manual checks may suffice; accept that they will not provide comprehensive history, cross-platform comparisons, visual detection, or structured team workflows.
- Social team that publishes and responds daily: Compare Sprout Social and Hootsuite, including the cost and precise scope of listening at the required tier.
- Agency: Prioritize client separation, multiple workspaces, roles, approvals, white-label reporting, exports, per-brand pricing, and API access. YouScan’s Unlimited plan lists unlimited users, custom dashboards, exports, API access, and configurable user access; verify fit and quote details.
- PR or corporate communications: Put Meltwater on the shortlist if news and broader media coverage matter as much as social conversations. Test alert latency, historical baselines, reach methodology, and executive reporting.
- Consumer research or global brand: Evaluate Brandwatch, Meltwater, YouScan, Hootsuite/Talkwalker capabilities, and Sprinklr around archives, source-level coverage, classifiers, data scale, governance, and integrations.
- Visual-first brand: Trial logo and product recognition against real customer content and manually check false positives. Verify whether image analysis is included or separately priced.
- Multilingual or regulated organization: Get written answers on language quality, local sources, country filters, Unicode and transliteration, data residency, retention and deletion, personal data handling, SSO, audit logs, and how AI features use data.
For a very high-volume consumer brand, also prioritize query scalability, noise reduction, retention, rate limits, API access, and analyst support. Tool choice matters, but so does assigning an owner who reviews signals and connects them to decisions.
