There is no official Samsung Galaxy X release date. “Galaxy X” was a name used in speculation about Samsung’s first foldable phone, but the retail device launched as the Galaxy Fold. Samsung’s current foldables use the Galaxy Z branding; its 2026 range includes the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8.
What was the Samsung Galaxy X?
Galaxy X was a rumor-era name associated with Samsung’s long-anticipated foldable phone: a handset designed to open into a larger, tablet-like display. It was not the name Samsung ultimately used for a consumer phone. Because early reports were speculative, their proposed specifications, designs and launch windows should not be treated as details of a confirmed Galaxy X product.
Samsung had worked on foldable displays for years before bringing a foldable phone to market. The commercial device launched as the Galaxy Fold. Samsung later established the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip lines. That is best understood as an evolution of Samsung’s foldable products and branding—not proof that a Galaxy X handset was formally renamed one-to-one.
Did Galaxy X get canceled?
There is no basis here to say Samsung canceled the foldable-phone project. The more precise distinction is that the Galaxy X name did not become the retail name. Samsung commercialized its foldable-phone direction as Galaxy Fold and continued it under Galaxy Z. The modern Z Fold models are successors in that broader product lineage, not phones officially identified by Samsung as Galaxy X.

Latest Samsung foldable news: the 2026 lineup
Samsung held Galaxy Unpacked in London on July 22, 2026, where it introduced the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8. The announcement is the relevant current news for people following Samsung foldables; it did not announce a Galaxy X. See Samsung’s Unpacked event notice and Galaxy Z series announcement.
Samsung’s U.S. product and buying pages list Fold8 Ultra and Fold8 configurations for sale. That indicates U.S. retail availability, not identical launch timing or pricing in every country. Local availability, configurations, promotions, warranty terms and network compatibility can differ.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra vs. Galaxy Z Fold8
Both are book-style foldables: they open from a phone-sized folded form into a larger display. The Ultra is the premium, larger-screen option; the standard Fold8 costs less and weighs less. These are Samsung-listed specifications and U.S. list prices observed in August 2026, not independent test results or guaranteed sale prices.

The Ultra’s larger 8-inch inner screen and 200 MP main camera may matter if you regularly work across apps, read documents or want Samsung’s top-tier camera hardware. The standard Fold8 still offers a 7.6-inch inner screen and up to 1 TB of storage, while starting $200 lower in the U.S. The difference is not simply “good” versus “bad”: consider whether the Ultra’s larger display and premium features justify the extra cost for how you use a phone.

Specifications and prices are listed on Samsung’s Fold8 Ultra product page, Ultra buying page, Fold8 product page and Fold8 buying page. Samsung’s “up to” video playback figures are manufacturer claims, not a promise of identical battery life for every user.
Where the Galaxy Z Flip8 fits
The Galaxy Z Flip8 is the compact, clamshell member of Samsung’s current foldable family. It folds a conventional-style phone in half and uses a cover display for quick actions. Choose it if pocketability and the flip form factor matter more than a tablet-sized workspace. It is not a direct substitute for a Fold8 if your main reason for buying is a large internal screen. Samsung’s foldable buying guide positions the Flip as the compact option.

Is there a Galaxy X release date?
No official Galaxy X release date has been announced. Galaxy X is not the name of a currently confirmed Samsung retail phone. The confirmed 2026 foldable announcement took place on July 22, 2026, for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8. Samsung’s U.S. buying pages show current Fold8 configurations, but that does not establish a universal release date for every market.

Be cautious with pages that give a future Galaxy X launch month or list specifications under that name without a Samsung announcement. Old Galaxy X stories may preserve an earlier rumor, not a current launch plan. Rumors about a future form factor should not be attached to the Galaxy X name unless Samsung confirms it.

Should you buy a foldable or wait?
- Choose the Fold8 Ultra if you want Samsung’s largest book-style foldable screen and are willing to pay the premium for its listed camera and hardware specifications.
- Choose the Fold8 if you want the large inner display for media, reading or multitasking, but prefer a lighter phone and lower starting price than the Ultra.
- Choose the Flip8 if a phone that folds into a smaller, more pocketable shape is the priority, rather than a tablet-like workspace.
- Consider a conventional Galaxy S phone if price, a familiar rigid-phone design and simpler repair considerations matter more to you than the foldable screen.
Foldables cost substantially more than many conventional phones and have more complex mechanical construction. Before buying, consider whether you will use the inner display enough to justify the cost, how comfortable the folded thickness is, and what repair or protection coverage is available in your market. Hinge, crease and inner-screen durability are reasonable ownership concerns, but the evidence here does not establish a failure rate or prove that one current model is more durable than another. Samsung Display says its Flex Titanium technology is intended to improve flexibility and durability in the display-support structure; that is a manufacturer development claim, not independent proof of long-term durability.
Compare the final checkout price rather than a headline trade-in amount. Promotions can depend on the phone traded in, its condition, the sales channel and the offer period; carrier credits may also require an installment plan or eligible service. The cited U.S. list prices are not necessarily what you will pay, and imported or regional models can differ in connectivity, software, warranty and availability.
