The Twitch “Something Went Wrong” message is a generic failure notice, not one specific error with one universal fix. The fastest troubleshooting path is to check Twitch’s service status, retry the action, test a private browser window, disable extensions, clear Twitch site data, try another network or device, and then check whether the failed feature has its own restrictions.
First, identify what failed
Note the exact action that produced the message:
- Opening Twitch or signing in
- Loading a live stream or VOD
- Sending chat messages
- Following or subscribing
- Creating a clip
- Opening the Creator Dashboard
- Using the Android or iPhone app
Also check whether every channel fails, whether Twitch works while logged out, and whether the problem appears on one device, browser, account, or network. These details determine which fix is most useful.
1. Check whether Twitch is having an outage
Open status.twitch.tv and look for an incident affecting the website, login, video, chat, or another relevant service.

Wait for the incident to be resolved and try again afterward. Do not assume Twitch is down unless the official status page or your own cross-device testing supports that conclusion.

2. Retry and restart Twitch
- Select Retry, if Twitch displays that option.
- Refresh the page.
- Close the Twitch tab completely and reopen it.
- Force-close and relaunch the app if you are on mobile.
- Restart the device if the error continues.
Retry the same action once. Repeatedly attempting subscriptions, payments, or other account actions can create confusion or duplicate requests.
3. Test a private or incognito window
- Open a private window in your browser.
- Visit Twitch and sign in if necessary.
- Repeat the failed action.
If Twitch works privately, the likely cause is stored site data, an extension, or a browser privacy setting. If it fails there too, the cause is more likely to be Twitch-side, account-related, device-related, or network-related. Private browsing is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a permanent solution.
4. Temporarily disable extensions and privacy tools
Test Twitch without extensions that can modify page requests or video elements, including:

- Ad, tracker, cookie, or script blockers
- VPN and proxy extensions
- Custom Twitch chat, emote, or video tools
- Password managers that inject page elements
- User-agent and browser-modification tools
Disable extensions temporarily, reload Twitch, and retry. If the error disappears, re-enable extensions one at a time to find the conflict. Restore security tools afterward and whitelist only the necessary Twitch domains if you understand the privacy and advertising trade-offs. Do not permanently disable antivirus or browser security features.

5. Clear Twitch site data
Use this step when Twitch works in a private window but not in a normal one. Open your browser’s site-data or privacy settings, search for twitch.tv, and remove Twitch’s cookies and stored website data. Browser labels vary, but the control is commonly available from the site-information icon beside Twitch’s address bar or from the browser’s privacy settings.
Firefox and Safari provide equivalent controls for clearing cookies and website data for an individual site. Afterward, reopen Twitch and sign in again.
Clearing Twitch site data can remove your active session and saved preferences, so you may need to complete two-factor authentication again. It does not fix a Twitch outage or a channel-level restriction.

Try Twitch in a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari, then compare the result with a different mainstream browser. If Twitch works elsewhere:

- Update the original browser.
- Remove or reconfigure conflicting extensions.
- Reset Twitch-specific permissions.
- Review strict privacy settings and hardware-acceleration settings.
An embedded browser inside another application may behave differently from a normal desktop browser, so test the official Twitch site directly.
7. Check your network
- Open another website to see whether the connection works generally.
- Restart the router or modem if multiple services are failing.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi or use a wired connection where practical.
- Try a trusted phone hotspot or another network.
If Twitch works on cellular but not home Wi-Fi, investigate the router, ISP, DNS, filtering, VPN, or parental-control settings. If it fails on every network, the problem is more likely Twitch-side, account-side, or device-specific.
VPN, proxy, firewall, and antivirus checks
Temporarily test without a VPN, proxy, corporate or school filter, antivirus web inspection, router-level ad blocking, or custom DNS filtering. VPNs can cause login, CAPTCHA, regional-routing, playback, and abuse-detection problems, so do not treat one as a default fix.
Disable only one control at a time, test on a trusted personal network, and restore it immediately afterward. Do not install unofficial “Twitch repair” utilities.

DNS troubleshooting
Restart the router and test another network before changing DNS. If you are comfortable with network settings, flush the DNS cache using your operating system’s current instructions or test another resolver. DNS changes may help with name-resolution or routing problems, but they cannot fix broken cookies, Twitch application errors, account permissions, or a platform outage. Revert the change if it does not help.
8. Fix the Twitch mobile app
Android
- Force-close Twitch and restart the phone.
- Update Twitch through Google Play.
- Check that the phone’s date and time are correct.
- Clear the app cache.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Reinstall Twitch if necessary.
Clearing cache is less disruptive than clearing storage or app data. Clearing storage can remove the local session and settings, and reinstalling may require your password and two-factor authentication.
iPhone and iPad
- Force-close Twitch and restart the device.
- Update Twitch through the App Store.
- Check available storage.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Delete and reinstall the app if the error persists.
iOS does not generally offer the same separate clear-cache control as Android, so reinstalling is often the practical app reset.

Twitch’s official clip guidance says technical problems can produce this message and recommends retrying, refreshing, restarting the app or browser, disabling add-ons, and checking the network.

Clips also have feature-specific causes. A streamer can disable clips or limit them to followers or subscribers. You may also lack permission or be blocked. Twitch warns that attempting to clip the first 1 minute 30 seconds of a VOD can produce an error or unpredictable behavior.
For a clip-specific test:
- Try clipping a different live channel.
- Try a different VOD.
- Avoid the first 1:30 of a VOD.
- Confirm that you are signed in.
- Test a private window or another browser.
- Disable extensions temporarily.
- Try the mobile app or another trusted network.
“This channel cannot be clipped” points toward a channel setting. A permission message points toward a follower, subscriber, blocked-user, or account restriction. “Something Went Wrong” alone does not prove any of these causes.
10. Troubleshoot by symptom

| Only one channel or VOD fails | Check channel settings, VOD state, and regional or content restrictions. |
| Video works but clips fail | Check clip permissions, the VOD timestamp, and extensions. |
| Logged out works but logged in fails | Clear cookies and consider session or account permissions. |
| Every device and network fails | Check for an incident and contact Twitch Support. |
Login, playback, chat, and Creator Dashboard cases
Login
Verify your credentials and two-factor code, then try the official login page in a private window. Clear Twitch cookies and temporarily test without a VPN or proxy. Use Twitch’s official recovery and support routes if the account is locked or requires additional verification. A generic error does not by itself prove that your account is banned or suspended.
Playback
Try another channel, lower video quality temporarily, disable video-related extensions, update the browser or app, and test another network. The stream may have ended, be restricted, or be unavailable in your region. Playback fixes do not necessarily solve login, chat, or clip failures.
Chat, follows, subscriptions, and Creator Dashboard
If video works but chat fails, test chat in another browser tab and disable chat-related extensions. If following or subscribing fails, test another channel and confirm that your account session is valid. If public pages load but the Creator Dashboard fails, clear site data and test without extensions.
When to contact Twitch Support
Contact Twitch through the official Twitch Help site when the error persists after testing another browser, device, and network; affects account access, payments, or subscriptions; involves suspicious login activity; or appears related to account enforcement or permissions.
Include your username, affected channel or VOD, exact action, device and operating system, browser or app version, time and time zone, screenshot or screen recording, and whether another browser, device, or network worked. Stop troubleshooting if repeated attempts could create duplicate charges or account actions.
