If Gmail will not send an email, first identify where it fails: Gmail may not load, the message may remain in Drafts or Outbox, an error may appear immediately, or the message may be in Sent but never reach the recipient. Each symptom has a different fix.
Start with the quick test below, then follow the section matching your exact problem.
Fastest 60-second test
- Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard for a Gmail incident. Do not change account settings repeatedly during a confirmed outage.
- Open another website to confirm your internet connection. Then try a different network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.
- Send a short, text-only email to yourself.
- Try Gmail at mail.google.com if the app fails, or the Gmail app if the browser fails.
- Check whether the original message is in Drafts, Outbox, or Sent before clicking Send again. Repeated clicks can create duplicate messages after a delayed connection.
- Check your Google Account storage.
If the text-only test works, the original problem is probably the attachment, recipient, message content, or sending limit—not Gmail’s basic connection.

Check the connection and browser
Test another website, switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, and restart the device. If Gmail works on another network or device, the account is probably healthy and the original connection or device is the problem.

On a computer, open Gmail in a private or incognito window. This is a diagnostic test: browser extensions are commonly disabled there. If sending works privately, disable extensions in the normal browser, especially ad blockers, privacy or script-blocking tools, security extensions, and mail-management add-ons.
Then update the browser, try a supported alternative, and clear Gmail’s cached site data and cookies. Google recommends these steps for Gmail loading and browser problems: use the latest Gmail browser version and fix common Gmail errors.
Disable Gmail experimental features
In desktop Gmail, open Settings → See all settings → Advanced. Disable enabled experimental features, select Save Changes, and test again. Labels can vary by browser, language, and Workspace policy.
Message stuck in Drafts or Outbox
A message in Drafts was not successfully sent. A message in Outbox has been queued, commonly because Gmail is offline or synchronization has not completed. A message in Sent was accepted by Gmail for processing, but that does not guarantee final delivery.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
- Restore internet access and leave Gmail open for a few minutes.
- Open Outbox and inspect the queued message.
- Remove the attachment and try a text-only version.
- If the message still will not send, copy its important text into a new message before deleting or recreating it.
Gmail Offline in Chrome intentionally stores messages in Outbox while you are offline. They should send when connectivity returns. Gmail Offline requires Chrome, does not work in an Incognito window, and Chrome must remain open for synchronization. See Google’s Gmail Offline guidance.
“Couldn’t send message”: check attachments and storage
Remove every attachment and send a short test. If that works, troubleshoot the file rather than the account.
- For personal Gmail accounts, the total attachment limit is 25 MB per message. Google may replace larger attachments with a Google Drive link.
- Executable files such as
.execan be blocked for security reasons. Renaming the extension does not make a risky file acceptable. - A slow connection, blocked attachment domains, browser problems, insufficient Google storage, or a failed Drive upload can interrupt attachment sending.
- For a large file, upload it to Google Drive and confirm that the recipient has permission to open the link.
Do not disable antivirus or network security merely to send a prohibited file. Use Drive, an approved file-transfer service, or your organization’s approved channel instead. See Google’s attachment requirements.
Check Google Account storage
Google Account storage is shared by Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. Gmail messages and attachments in Spam and Trash also use storage. When the account reaches its limit, you may be unable to send or receive messages, and incoming messages can be returned to their senders.

- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
- Delete unnecessary large emails, Drive files, and Photos items.
- Empty Gmail Trash and Spam.
- Wait for the storage total to update.
- Retry with a small text-only email.
Do not confuse a full Google Account with a full phone or computer. Device storage can prevent an app from syncing, while Google Account storage affects cloud mail and files. Gmail Offline storage is a separate browser feature. Google explains storage-related Gmail problems in its sync and storage guidance.
Fix Gmail on Android
- Update Gmail through Google Play and restart the phone or tablet.
- Open a website to verify internet access, then refresh Gmail by swiping down in the inbox.
- In Gmail, open Menu → Settings → select the account. Under Data usage, make sure Sync Gmail is enabled.
- Open Android’s account-sync controls and choose Sync now. Exact labels vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Check available device storage and Google Account storage.
- Force-stop Gmail, reopen it, and test again.
Synchronization can take up to 15 minutes. Clear Gmail’s storage or app data only as a last resort: Google warns that this can remove local drafts, signatures, ringtones, and other app settings. Copy important draft text first. See Google’s Android Gmail troubleshooting.
Fix Gmail on iPhone or iPad
- Update Gmail in the App Store and restart the device.
- Test Wi-Fi and cellular data separately.
- Open Gmail and swipe down to refresh.
- Open Gmail → Menu → Settings → General → Data usage → Sync settings. Choose an appropriate number of days to sync.
- Open iOS or iPadOS Settings → General → Background App Refresh, and enable Gmail.
- Check Google Account storage.
If less disruptive steps fail, remove and add the Google Account again. The Gmail iOS app does not use a conventional Sign out button; removing the account from the app is the normal reset route. Google’s iPhone and iPad guidance explains the process.

Gmail says you reached a sending limit
For personal Gmail accounts, Google documents examples including sending more than 500 emails in one day or sending one message to more than 500 recipients. Large bursts, many invalid addresses, repeated delivery failures, or spam-like behavior can also trigger restrictions.

Stop sending and wait. Google says sending generally becomes available again within 1 to 24 hours, but this is not an absolute guarantee. Do not evade limits by rapidly switching accounts or using questionable bulk-mail tools. Legitimate newsletters should use a compliant mailing service and follow Google’s sender requirements.
These figures are examples for personal Gmail, not a universal rule for every Google Workspace account, organization, client, or sending pattern. Workspace administrators can apply different policies and limits.
The email is in Sent but the recipient never received it
Being in Sent means Gmail accepted the message for processing; it does not prove that the recipient’s mail system delivered it to the inbox.
- Check the recipient address character by character.
- Ask the recipient to check Spam, Junk, Promotions, filters, and other folders.
- Ask them to add your address to contacts or mark a previous message as Not spam.
- Send a short message without attachments.
- Wait for a delayed-delivery notice or bounceback.
If only one recipient is affected, the recipient’s server, mailbox storage, filtering, or address is more likely than a general Gmail failure. Google’s delayed and missing delivery guide covers these cases.

Read the bounceback message
Open the email with a title such as Delivery Status Notification (Failure). The complete error text and code usually identify the correct fix.
| Error or symptom | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid or nonexistent address | The recipient address is incorrect. | Correct the spelling or ask the recipient for the exact address. |
| Recipient mailbox full | The recipient cannot accept more mail. | The recipient must free storage; changing your Gmail settings will not fix it. |
| Temporary recipient-server problem | The receiving system is temporarily unavailable. | Wait and retry later. |
| Message too large | The message or attachments exceed the receiving limit. | Remove attachments or use a Drive link. |
| Sending limit reached | Your account has triggered a quota or abuse-prevention limit. | Stop sending and wait for the limit to reset. |
| Security or policy rejection | The file, content, sender, or destination was filtered. | Remove blocked content and use an approved delivery method. |
| HELO/EHLO error | An external mail server or SMTP device identified itself incorrectly. | Check the server, printer, scanner, relay, or mail-client configuration. |
HELO/EHLO errors generally do not apply to ordinary Gmail web users. Google’s bounceback guide and SMTP error guide explain the exact error categories.
Outlook, Apple Mail, printers, and scanners
If Gmail sends successfully at mail.google.com but not through Outlook, Apple Mail, a printer, scanner, fax machine, or another client, the Gmail account is probably working. Investigate the separate device or client’s authentication, account setup, synchronization, outgoing-server configuration, and security requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Do not change SMTP ports or server names for a normal Gmail-web problem. Those settings matter only when a separate client or device is sending mail. If the client contains a non-Gmail address, verify that provider’s current incoming and outgoing settings rather than applying generic Gmail settings. Google’s client guidance covers supported access methods.
Security and account restrictions
Use this branch if Google asks you to verify your identity, you recently changed the password, a suspicious sign-in was blocked, or messages are being sent without your knowledge.
- Complete Google’s sign-in or security verification.
- Review recent account activity.
- Change the password if compromise is suspected.
- Remove unfamiliar third-party app access.
- Review forwarding addresses, filters, delegated accounts, recovery information, and sent messages.
If you cannot sign in, use Google’s account-recovery process rather than repeatedly retrying from unfamiliar networks. Treat unauthorized sending as an account-security problem, not merely a Gmail composition error.
Work or school Gmail accounts
Google Workspace accounts can have administrator-defined attachment limits, sending limits, external-recipient restrictions, forwarding rules, quarantine, compliance policies, SMTP relay settings, or account suspensions. If the error names an organizational policy, contact the administrator. If many users are affected, the administrator should check the Workspace Status Dashboard and organization-wide routing or policy settings.

Last-resort recovery
- Test direct web Gmail before removing an account or changing mail-server settings.
- Copy important draft text before deleting a draft, clearing app data, or removing an account.
- On Android, clear Gmail app data only after updating, restarting, checking sync, and checking storage.
- On iPhone or iPad, remove and re-add the account only after the normal refresh and background-sync checks.
- Do not install third-party “Gmail repair” utilities or provide Google passwords to them.
Quick diagnosis
- Gmail will not load: check the status dashboard, connection, browser, extensions, and cache.
- Message stays in Outbox: reconnect, leave Gmail open, and wait for synchronization.
- Only an attachment fails: check the 25 MB personal-Gmail limit, file type, storage, and upload.
- Sending limit error: stop sending and wait up to 24 hours according to Google’s guidance.
- Bounceback: follow its exact error and determine whether the sender or recipient must act.
- Message is in Sent but missing: check the address, recipient folders, filters, delays, and recipient storage.
- Only the app or email client fails: update and resync that app or recheck its authentication and configuration.
