To stop an active Apple Maps route on your Apple Watch, open the route, tap the Close button (usually the X in the upper-left corner), and then tap End Route. Pressing the Digital Crown or returning to the watch face does not replace this route-ending command.
Stop an active Maps route on Apple Watch
- Open Maps on your Apple Watch.
- Return to the screen showing the active turn-by-turn route.
- Tap Close—usually shown as an X in the upper-left corner.
- Tap End Route.
The Watch should stop giving turn prompts, sounds, and navigation taps. Apple documents this procedure in its Apple Watch Maps directions guide.

Leaving Maps is not the same as ending navigation
Pressing the Digital Crown, locking the display, or returning to the watch face only leaves or hides the app. It is not the documented way to end an active route, so Maps may continue providing guidance when the display wakes again.

| What you want | What to do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| End navigation completely | Maps → Close/X → End Route | Stops the current Apple Maps route. |
| Silence audible alerts | Use Silent Mode or the relevant sound control. | This does not necessarily stop haptic turn alerts. |
| Stop wrist taps generally | Open Settings → Sounds & Haptics and adjust Haptics. | This is a broad Apple Watch setting and can affect feedback from other apps and alerts. |
Apple lists haptic intensity options such as Default, Prominent, and Off, depending on the watchOS version. See Apple’s volume and haptics guide.
Stop Maps from reopening after you return to the watch face
If Maps keeps appearing whenever the display wakes, change its return behavior. On the Watch, open:
Settings → General → Return to Clock → Maps
Choose the setting that returns to the clock face instead of keeping Maps as the last-used app. This changes what appears after the display wakes; it does not cancel an active route. End the route separately with Close/X → End Route. Apple explains this behavior in its guide to returning to the clock face and last-used apps.

- Confirm that a route is active. A destination preview or route overview is not necessarily active turn-by-turn navigation.
- Open Maps directly from the app grid or Dock and return to the active route screen.
- Try the Close/X button again from inside the route view, rather than from the watch face or a search screen.
- Check the iPhone. If the route is still active in iPhone Maps, end it there too. Muting spoken directions on the iPhone only changes audio; it does not necessarily end the Watch route. Apple documents those separate audio controls here.
- Force-close Maps if it is frozen. Press the side button to show recent apps, find Maps, swipe left on its card, and tap the red delete button if that option is available on your watchOS version. Reopen Maps and try again.
- Restart the Watch and paired iPhone if the route remains stuck.
- Check the navigation app. Google Maps, Citymapper, transit apps, and other navigation tools have separate controls and may be generating the alerts instead of Apple Maps.
Force-closing and restarting are general troubleshooting steps, not replacements for Apple’s normal route-ending procedure.
Do not turn off Location Services for this problem
Disabling Location Services is not a normal way to stop a route. Apple requires Location Services for turn-by-turn directions on Apple Watch, and switching it off can interfere with Maps and other location-dependent features. End the active route directly instead.
Does ending Maps also stop a Workout?
Not automatically. Apple Maps navigation and an Apple Watch Workout session are separate functions. If you started a walk, hike, cycling workout, or another workout, open the Workout app and check or end that session separately.
Older Apple Watch models and watchOS versions
The button layout and labels can differ on older watchOS releases. The current Apple Watch guide is for watchOS 26, while Apple also provides earlier guide versions. On older software, look for the control that closes the active route and then choose the command that ends navigation; do not assume that leaving the app cancels it.
Apple’s route options and transportation features can also vary by location. The End Route control applies to an active Apple Maps navigation session, while third-party apps may use different screens.
