Short answer: The headline is based on a real peer-reviewed 2025 experiment, but it overstates what has been established. Researchers reported a continuous, extremely small electrical signal from a hollow manganese-zinc ferrite cylinder fixed to Earth. They interpret it as energy extracted from Earth’s rotation through the planet’s magnetic field. A peer-reviewed critique published in June 2026 disputes both the underlying theory and that energy-source interpretation.

The device is not a practical generator, perpetual-motion machine, or commercial product. The reported output is in the sub-picowatt range according to the 2026 critique—far too little to charge a phone, power a home, or replace solar panels, batteries, or conventional generators.

What the experiment actually demonstrated

The original study, published in Physical Review Research on March 19, 2025, was led by Christopher F. Chyba, Kevin P. Hand, and Thomas H. Chyba. It used a small hollow cylindrical shell made from manganese-zinc ferrite, a soft magnetic and electrically resistive ceramic material.

Electrodes and measurement leads were attached to the shell. There was no spinning rotor, turbine, crank, or moving magnet. The proposed energy source was the interaction between Earth’s rotation, Earth’s magnetic field, and the ferrite shell’s unusual magnetic response.

The authors reported a continuous direct-current voltage and current. They also tested the apparatus at more than one location and in multiple orientations. Their paper describes the result as evidence for a proposed way to generate electricity from Earth’s rotation.

That is a claim about the interpretation of a tiny measurement—not proof that a useful Earth-powered generator has been built.

Why the cylinder’s shape and material matter

This is not the same as placing an ordinary coil or metal bar outside and waiting for Earth’s rotation to produce electricity. The experiment depended on a specific combination of:

  • a hollow cylindrical shape;
  • manganese-zinc ferrite with high magnetic permeability and electrical resistance;
  • a low magnetic Reynolds number, allowing magnetic diffusion through the material to matter; and
  • an orientation relative to Earth’s rotational velocity and magnetic field.

According to the researchers, the geometry and magnetic diffusion prevent the complete cancellation normally expected when a device, its surroundings, and Earth’s magnetic field co-rotate.

Why Earth’s rotation creates a theoretical problem

Earth’s surface, laboratory equipment, and the cylinder all rotate together. That creates an immediate objection: if the conductor and magnetic field are effectively moving together, why should a stationary object fixed to the ground experience a net electromotive force?

The conventional expectation is that co-rotation should cancel the simple motion-based effect. Chyba and colleagues argue that this conclusion assumes a magnetic field response that does not apply to their magnetically diffusive hollow shell. In their model, the material’s permeability, the shell’s topology, and magnetic diffusion leave a small voltage that can be associated with Earth’s rotation.

What tests did the researchers perform?

The reported result included several controls designed to test whether the signal behaved like the predicted effect:

  • The largest signal appeared when the cylinder’s long axis was perpendicular to both Earth’s rotational velocity and the local magnetic field.
  • The signal disappeared when the apparatus was rotated so the cylinder was parallel to the relevant velocity direction.
  • After another 90-degree rotation, the signal returned with the opposite polarity.
  • An otherwise similar solid manganese-zinc ferrite cylinder did not show a comparable signal.
  • A cylindrical shell with a high magnetic Reynolds number also did not show the same effect.

The team also considered thermal gradients and thermoelectric voltages, 60-hertz mains interference, radio-frequency background, instrument offsets, orientation-related artifacts, and effects involving the measurement leads and full apparatus.

These controls make the result more interesting than a simple unexplained voltage offset. They do not, by themselves, settle the theoretical question.

How much power did it produce?

Very little. The 2026 critical paper characterizes the claimed output as being in the sub-picowatt range. A picowatt is one-trillionth of a watt, so sub-picowatt power is extraordinarily small.

This distinction matters because voltage is not the same as usable power. Electrical power is calculated as:

P = V × I

A sensitive instrument can detect a tiny voltage even when the source cannot deliver meaningful current to a load. The reported signal is not enough to run a phone, power ordinary wireless electronics directly, operate household equipment, or provide grid-scale electricity.

It also would not be enough to make a useful emergency generator merely by placing a ferrite cylinder outdoors. The experiment required specialized materials, carefully controlled geometry, low-noise measurement equipment, and substantial laboratory infrastructure.

The June 2026 scientific dispute

On June 2, 2026, physicist Rinke Wijngaarden published a peer-reviewed comment challenging the result. His objection is more fundamental than a complaint about experimental noise.

Wijngaarden argues that a rigid device fixed to Earth’s surface co-rotates with Earth and that the proposed electromagnetic treatment does not produce the claimed electromotive force. He also argues that the experiment did not establish that the measured sub-picowatt signal came from the kinetic energy of Earth’s rotation.

In other words, the signal may be real as an instrument reading while its physical interpretation remains unproven.

How the original authors responded

Chyba, Hand, and Chyba published a reply on the same day. They argued that the critique assumes the magnetic field translates exactly with the velocity of the ferrite shell. In their view, that assumption is not appropriate for a shell in which magnetic diffusion is important.

TF2 EMF Pollution Meter – 3-in-1 Magnetic, Electric & RF Field Detection
  • Detects: Magnetic fields, electric fields, and RF (20 MHz–6 GHz; includes most 5G but not experimental millimeter waves). Does not detect radioactivity.
  • Displays EMF fluctuations fully: bars update instantly for fast digital signals, while RF and number averages refresh 4 times per second. Other meters over-average or filter field peaks, giving slower, less complete readings.
  • Features: 3-axis magnetic, single-axis electric (with standard or weighted frequency responses), and single-axis RF readings (unweighted). Weighted readings emphasize effects on the human body.
  • Measures: 4G and 5G cell phones, cell towers, WiFi routers, Bluetooth, AC Powerlines, and Smart Meters. The TF2 responds to RF very fast compared to other meters.
  • Includes: Trifield TF2 meter, 9V battery, Quick-start Card, Detailed Instruction Manual, and soft-shell, zipper carry case.

The authors defended their model and said their experiment observed the five predicted features: the orientation dependence, polarity reversal, the difference between hollow and solid ferrite, and the absence of the effect in the high-magnetic-Reynolds-number shell.

As of September 2026, the responsible description is therefore “an intriguing, contested laboratory result,” not an established new form of power generation.

Is this perpetual motion?

No—not automatically. If the researchers’ interpretation were confirmed, the device would be drawing from Earth’s rotational energy, which is a physical energy reservoir rather than an unlimited source. The corresponding effect on Earth’s rotation would be unimaginably small, but the energy would still come from somewhere.

However, calling the experiment a demonstrated Earth-powered generator goes too far because the energy accounting and electromagnetic mechanism are disputed. “Free energy” and “perpetual motion” are misleading descriptions.

Could the device be scaled up?

The original paper suggested that scaling toward higher voltage and current could be investigated. It did not establish a practical engineering route to commercially meaningful output.

Several hurdles remain:

  • the theoretical dispute must be resolved;
  • the result needs independent replication by an unaffiliated laboratory;
  • the measured signal must be separated from every possible apparatus and instrumentation artifact;
  • the output must increase dramatically while preserving the predicted behavior; and
  • any power-conditioning system must consume less energy than the device delivers.

The team’s second test location is a reproduction by the same research group, not independent confirmation. No verified consumer or industrial product has emerged from the experiment.

What this research does—and does not—mean

Claim What the evidence supports
Is the story real? Yes. It comes from a peer-reviewed 2025 physics paper.
Did researchers detect a signal? They reported a tiny continuous DC voltage and current with orientation and material dependence.
Is the signal definitely power from Earth’s rotation? No. That interpretation is disputed in peer-reviewed research published in 2026.
Can it power useful devices? No demonstrated application can do so.
Is there a product to buy? No credible commercial product directly implementing this experiment has been established.

Verdict

The headline points to a genuine and unusual physics experiment, not a ready-made energy technology. A research team reported a tiny electrical signal from a specially shaped ferrite shell and attributed it to Earth’s rotation interacting with the planet’s magnetic field. A later peer-reviewed critique argues that the mechanism cannot work as proposed, and the original authors have disputed that criticism.

Until independent laboratories reproduce the result and the theoretical disagreement is resolved, the scientifically accurate takeaway is simple: this is a real but contested laboratory claim with no practical power-generation value.
