Google Maps did not discover that Earth is round. In August 2018, its desktop site began switching to a 3D globe when users zoomed out to a world view, replacing the familiar flat map at that scale. The option is still documented by Google for computer users. It makes the planet’s overall shape and continental size relationships easier to see, but it does not make every map view or geographic detail more accurate.

How to turn on Globe view in Google Maps

Google’s current instructions describe the feature on a computer:

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Select Layers.
  3. Choose More.
  4. Enable Globe view.
  5. Refresh the page if prompted, then zoom out until the globe is visible.

Once it appears, drag the globe to rotate or move around the planet. Google documents the setting in its Globe view help page. Google’s instructions are specifically for computers; the controls and availability may differ in the Android or iOS Maps apps.

If the globe does not appear

  • You cannot find Globe view: Check that you are using Google Maps in a computer browser. The official instructions do not establish that the same option is available in every mobile app or interface.
  • The setting is enabled, but the map is still flat: Zoom farther out and refresh the page. At local and regional scales, a flat map is expected and often more practical.
  • Your controls look different: Google can change its interface. Look in the Layers menu for Globe view, and consult the current Google help page if the listed labels do not match.

What changed in 2018?

The update was a change to how Google Maps presented the planet at global scale—not a change to its geographic data or a new scientific finding. Before the change, zooming far enough out left users looking at a flat rectangular world map. In August 2018, Google Maps desktop added a 3D globe at that zoom level. Contemporary coverage noted that Greenland no longer appeared comparable in area to Africa, a striking example of the distortion a flat projection can create (Futurism’s report on the 2018 update).

This was not the first time Google Maps offered any Earth-like or 3D experience. Google announced an Earth view in Maps in 2010, drawing on technology associated with Google Earth. The 2018 change specifically concerned the world-scale view in the desktop Maps interface (Google’s 2010 announcement).

Why did the map look flat—and why did Greenland look so large?

A globe has three dimensions; a screen is a flat rectangle. To show the whole planet on that rectangle, a map must use a projection: a mathematical way of transferring locations from a curved surface to a flat one. Every flat world map involves trade-offs. It cannot preserve all shapes, areas, distances, and directions at once. The U.S. Geological Survey’s overview of map projections explains this basic compromise.

Google’s developer documentation describes Google Maps’ world-coordinate system as based on the Mercator projection. Mercator is useful for online maps because it preserves local angles, which helps make directions and navigation intuitive. But it increasingly enlarges areas toward the poles. Greenland therefore looks much bigger relative to Africa on a Mercator world map than it is in reality; the difference comes from the projection, not from incorrect land-area data. Google’s documentation also notes that this coordinate system’s usable latitude range stops at about 85 degrees north and south (Google Maps coordinate documentation).

Globe view avoids flattening the entire planet into a rectangle, so it gives a more physically faithful sense of Earth’s overall shape and makes continental area relationships easier to judge. It does not make every view distortion-free: a globe shown on a screen still has perspective, and labels, imagery detail, and other design choices have their own limits.

Is Globe view more accurate?

It is more faithful for some global-scale comparisons, but “more accurate” depends on what you want to understand. A globe is a good choice for seeing the planet’s curvature, the layout of continents, and why high-latitude land looks exaggerated on Mercator maps. Mercator remains useful for street and regional browsing, where preserving local angles is valuable.

Nor does changing the projection verify the accuracy of every road, boundary, label, satellite image, or measurement in Google Maps. Projection accuracy—the way a map represents Earth’s geometry—is separate from the accuracy of the underlying geographic information. Globe view changes the world-scale visualization; it does not fix every possible mapping error.

There are other approaches, too. Equal-area projections aim to preserve relative area while still producing a flat map, but they distort other properties, such as shape or direction. There is no single projection that is best for every purpose. A globe is particularly helpful when the question is what the whole Earth looks like, while a flat map may work better for a specific journey or task.

Google Maps Globe view vs. Google Earth

Globe view is a mode within Google Maps. It keeps you in Maps, with its map layers and familiar mapping features, while showing a globe at world scale. Google Earth is a separate virtual-globe product built for 3D exploration, including rotating, tilting, and viewing terrain. Google’s Google Earth help page covers its computer navigation controls. Choose Maps Globe view to browse a global map; choose Earth when you want a more immersive 3D exploration experience.

What the change does—and does not—mean

  • It does: give supported computer users a 3D globe in Google Maps at world scale, making the planet’s shape more apparent and avoiding Mercator’s extreme polar area enlargement in that view.
  • It does not: mean Google previously believed Earth was flat, provide new evidence about Earth’s shape, make flat maps invalid, eliminate every kind of distortion, or turn every Maps screen into a globe.

The 2018 headline that Google Maps “accurately” showed Earth as round was a playful description of a real interface change. The practical point is narrower: Google added a globe for viewing the whole planet, while retaining flat maps for the many situations where they are useful.
