VLC can convert audio and video files locally through Media → Convert/Save. Use transcoding when you need to change a codec, bitrate, sample rate, or stream; use remuxing when you only need a different container and the existing codecs are compatible. The instructions below follow the VLC 3.x desktop interface documented by VideoLAN, so labels and available profiles may vary by operating system or build.
Before converting a file
- Keep the original file until you have checked the output.
- Identify the device, app, browser, or service that must play the converted file.
- Use Tools → Codec Information in VLC to inspect the source’s video, audio, and subtitle streams.
- Save to a new filename and to a folder where you have write permission.
Download VLC only from the official VideoLAN website.
Container, codec, and conversion: what is changing?
A container is the file wrapper, such as MP4, MKV, MOV, WebM, OGG, or AVI. A video codec compresses video, while an audio codec compresses audio. Examples include H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9, AAC, MP3, Opus, FLAC, and PCM. Subtitles may be stored as text or image streams inside the container or supplied as separate files.

Remuxing versus transcoding
Remuxing copies the existing audio and video streams into another container without re-encoding them. It is normally fast and does not introduce another generation of compression, but it works only when the destination container supports those codecs.
Transcoding decodes and re-encodes one or more streams. It is required when you need H.264 instead of H.265, MP3 instead of AAC, a different bitrate, changed frame rate, audio extraction, or another stream layout. Transcoding takes longer and can reduce quality, especially when converting between lossy formats.

- Open VLC.
- Select Media → Convert/Save.
- In the Open Media window, click Add, select the source file, and click Open.
- Click Convert/Save.
- Under Settings, choose a suitable Profile.
- Under Destination file, choose a new path and filename.
- Make sure the filename extension matches the selected container, such as
.mp4,.mkv,.mp3,.ogg, or.wav. - Click Start.
VLC may show conversion progress through its playback position rather than opening a separate conversion window. Do not assume the job is complete merely because a destination file appears; verify it afterward.

Choosing a VLC profile
A profile usually bundles the container, video codec, audio codec, and subtitle behavior. Names differ between VLC builds, but a profile similar to Video – H.264 + AAC (MP4) is a sensible compatibility starting point for many devices. It is not a universal guarantee: resolution, codec profile, bitrate, audio layout, subtitles, and device support still matter.

Customize a conversion profile
Use the profile controls beside the Profile menu to edit an existing profile or create one. Exact dialog labels vary, but the relevant categories generally include Encapsulation, Video codec, Audio codec, and Subtitles.

- Video codec: H.264 is a practical compatibility choice; H.265/HEVC, VP8/VP9, and Theora may suit particular targets.
- Video bitrate: Higher bitrate usually preserves more detail but creates a larger file. It does not compensate for unnecessarily low resolution.
- Frame rate: Keep the source frame rate unless the target specifically requires another value.
- Audio codec and bitrate: Choose AAC, MP3, Opus, Vorbis, FLAC, or another encoder available in your build. Higher lossy bitrates generally mean larger files.
- Sample rate: Avoid unnecessary upsampling. It does not restore detail discarded by the source.
- Channels: Keep stereo when the source is stereo, or choose mono when the destination requires it.
- Subtitles: Enable subtitle handling only when the selected container and profile support the type of subtitles you need.
VideoLAN documents options including vb and ab for video and audio bitrate, fps for frame rate, samplerate for sample rate, and channels for channel count in its transcoding guide.
Extract audio from a video
To make an audio-only file, open Media → Convert/Save, add the video, and select an audio-only profile. Choose a destination with the appropriate extension, such as .mp3, .m4a, .ogg, .flac, or .wav. Start the conversion, then confirm that the output contains an audio stream and no unwanted video stream.
There are two different operations:
- Copying audio: Preserves the original audio codec when the destination supports it.
- Transcoding audio: Re-encodes it into another codec such as MP3, AAC, Opus, FLAC, or WAV.
Converting an MP3 into WAV does not improve its quality. It only places already-compressed audio in an uncompressed format and usually makes the file much larger.

Change a container without re-encoding
Use remuxing when the codecs are already suitable and you only need another wrapper. For example, this VLC command remuxes an MP4 into an MKV file:
vlc sample.mp4 --sout="#std{access=file, mux=mkv, dst=sample.mkv}"The output should be close to the original size, apart from container overhead. Remuxing will not turn H.265 into H.264 or MP3 into AAC, and it may fail when the destination muxer cannot accept the source streams. Check the source codecs with Tools → Codec Information first.
Convert with VLC from the command line
VLC’s general stream-output structure is:
vlc input-file --sout="#transcode{transcoding-options}:std{output-options}"The transcode module re-encodes streams; std specifies how and where VLC saves the result.
Video conversion example

Bitrate units and available encoder options can depend on the VLC build and encoder module.
H.264 video without audio or subtitles

Command-line cautions
- Quote full input and output paths when they contain spaces.
- On Windows, use the full path to
vlc.exeif VLC is not onPATH. - Escape quotation marks and shell-special characters for your operating system.
- Test one file before automating a folder.
- Keep outputs in a separate directory and retain the originals.
- Add an automatic quit option only after confirming that the conversion completes correctly.

- Open the output in VLC.
- Select Tools → Codec Information.
- Confirm the expected video codec, audio codec, channel count, sample rate, and subtitle streams.
- Check the duration and file size.
- Scrub through the entire file, including transitions, and listen for synchronization problems.
- Test it on the target device or service.
A file being created does not prove that it is compatible or complete.
Troubleshooting VLC conversions
VLC creates no file
Check that the destination folder is writable, the filename has the correct extension, and the output file is not locked or already present. Try a simple local path and filename, a short source clip, and a standard H.264/AAC MP4 profile. If you only need a container change, try remuxing instead.
The output has video but no audio
The profile may disable audio, VLC may have selected an unexpected track, or the container may not support the chosen audio codec. Edit the profile, enable audio, and try AAC or MP3 as a compatibility test. Inspect the output with Codec Information.
The output has audio but no video
An audio-only profile or video-disabled custom profile was probably selected. Choose a video profile, enable video, and use a matching container and extension.

Audio and video are out of sync
Variable-frame-rate footage, damaged timestamps, frame-rate conversion, or unusual multiple audio tracks can cause synchronization problems. Test a short segment, preserve the source frame rate, avoid unnecessary sample-rate changes, and try another codec/container combination. For difficult sources, use HandBrake or FFmpeg.
Subtitles disappeared
Subtitle preservation is not automatic in every profile. The subtitle stream may be disabled, unsupported, or separate from the converted streams. Choose a profile that supports subtitles and enable subtitle handling. If subtitles must be permanently rendered into the picture, use a workflow designed for subtitle burn-in and verify the result.
The file works in VLC but not on the target device
This is usually a compatibility issue. Check the container, video codec and profile, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, channels, subtitle format, bitrate limits, and hardware-decoding support of the target. H.264 video with AAC audio in MP4 is a practical conservative test, not a universal guarantee.
When VLC is the wrong tool
VLC is a good choice for occasional local conversions, quick remuxing, basic transcoding, and audio extraction—especially when privacy matters and you do not want to upload media.
Use HandBrake when you want guided video presets, a conversion queue, and more predictable common H.264/H.265 workflows. Use FFmpeg when you need precise codec control, scripting, repeatable automation, or large batch jobs. A dedicated editor is more appropriate for accurate trimming, cropping, joining, complex subtitle rendering, or production workflows.
VLC may play a file without having a suitable encoder, muxer, or profile to convert it. No converter can make a lossy source lossless: transcoding MP3 to AAC or H.264 to H.265 cannot restore information discarded by the original encoding.
