If Gmail does not suggest names or email addresses while you type in the To, Cc, or Bcc field, type the complete email address manually first. You can usually continue sending messages while you repair Gmail’s contacts, browser, app, or Workspace settings.

First, identify which Gmail feature is broken
Recipient autocomplete suggests names and addresses as you type in a recipient field. Suggestions can come from saved Google Contacts, Other contacts, previous interactions, and other Google signals.
Smart Compose displays predictive gray text inside the email body. It is controlled separately, so changing Smart Compose will not restore missing recipient names.

Quick fixes for missing email-address suggestions
- Type the recipient’s complete email address manually and press Enter. This confirms whether sending still works.
- Click the To field instead of relying only on the inline list, then search for the contact or contact group.
- Reload Gmail, then sign out and back in if the list remains blank.
- Test Gmail in a private or incognito window.
When Google Contacts is temporarily unavailable, Google recommends manually entering the full address. Autocomplete may be unavailable even though Gmail can still send mail.

Check Gmail’s automatic contact setting
On a computer, open Gmail and go to Settings → See all settings → General. Find Create contacts for auto-complete, select When I send a message to a new person, add them to Other Contacts so that I can auto-complete to them next time, scroll down, and select Save Changes.
This setting controls whether people you email are automatically saved for future suggestions. It is not a universal on/off switch for every autocomplete source, and enabling it does not guarantee that every address will appear immediately. The same desktop settings path is not presented in the Gmail mobile apps.
Find the person in Google Contacts
Open Google Contacts on a computer and search by both the person’s name and complete email address. Check both Contacts and Other contacts. Google says people emailed in Gmail may be stored in Other contacts when automatic contact creation is enabled.

If the address is missing, create a regular contact with the correct name and email address. Then return to Gmail, start a new message, and type several characters of the name or address. A regular contact is a more dependable test than automatically generated suggestion data.
Remove hidden, wrong, or obsolete suggestions
Gmail lets you hide an individual suggestion. On desktop, start a message, type the person’s name or address, right-click the suggestion, and select Hide suggestion. Search again and choose Show hidden suggestions, if that option appears. On mobile, touch and hold the suggestion and choose Hide suggestion.
Hiding a suggestion is different from deleting a Google Contact. If Gmail suggests the wrong address:

- Edit the person’s regular Google Contact.
- Remove obsolete email addresses.
- Merge duplicate contacts where appropriate.
- Inspect Other contacts and remove an incorrect entry if necessary.
- Search Gmail using the exact address.
For Google Workspace users, an address change can also explain the problem. If an old address is retained as an alias, both addresses may appear. If it is not retained as an alias, the old address may disappear unless it is saved in Contacts or Other contacts.

Fix browser-specific Gmail autocomplete problems
Use these tests in order. Each one helps identify whether the problem is local to your browser rather than your Google account.
- Private-window test: Open an incognito or private window, sign in only to the affected account, and compose a message. If autocomplete works there, an extension, cookie, or browser profile is likely involved.
- Disable extensions: Temporarily disable ad blockers, privacy tools, script-control extensions, security software integrations, and Gmail enhancement add-ons.
- Try another supported browser: Use a current version of another browser. If it works, update or repair the original browser profile.
- Clear Gmail site data: Clear cookies and cached site data for Gmail, reload the page, and sign in again. This can resolve stale local state but will not repair account-level or Workspace problems.
- Check the active account: With multiple Google accounts signed in, make sure you are testing the same account whose Contacts and Gmail settings you changed.
Google’s Gmail browser troubleshooting guidance recommends current supported browsers, private-mode testing, disabling extensions, clearing cache and cookies, and trying another browser. These are isolation steps, not guaranteed autocomplete fixes.
When Gmail autocomplete fails on a phone or tablet
- Force-close and reopen the Gmail app.
- Update Gmail and the device operating system.
- Test Gmail in the device’s mobile browser. If the browser works but the app does not, the app’s local state is more likely involved.
- Refresh the account by signing out and back in only after confirming the password and recovery methods.
- Do not delete contacts as a first step. Back them up before bulk deletion, importing, or reinstalling the app.
Android and iPhone/iPad do not expose exactly the same contact and Smart Compose controls. A contact stored only locally on the phone may also not be available as a Google Account contact.

Computer
Open Settings → See all settings → General. Under Smart Compose, turn Writing suggestions on or off. If personalized predictions are missing, also check Smart Compose personalization.
Android
Open Gmail, select Menu → Settings, choose the account, and under General turn Smart Compose on or off.
iPhone or iPad
Open Gmail, select Menu → Settings, and under Compose and reply change Smart Compose.

Google Workspace checks
Workspace administrators can control Contacts, directory visibility, and contact-sharing behavior. Ask an administrator for help when autocomplete fails for multiple users or across multiple devices.
- Test a known internal user and a personal external contact.
- Determine whether the issue affects one user, an organizational unit, or the whole domain.
- Confirm Google Contacts is enabled for the affected users.
- Check directory visibility and contact-sharing settings.
- Review the Google Workspace Status Dashboard.
- Open a Workspace support case if the problem persists across browsers and devices.
Google specifically includes missing or extra autocomplete results among supported Contacts issues. An administrator can address domain-level configuration, but cannot directly fix an individual user’s browser cache or personal suggestion data.
How to recognize a Google-side problem
A server-side or account-level issue becomes more likely when autocomplete fails in every browser and on several devices, multiple Workspace users are affected, or Gmail reports that it is temporarily unable to access Contacts.
Continue by entering the complete address manually, then retry later. If Gmail also cannot send messages, the problem is broader than autocomplete and requires normal Gmail delivery or account troubleshooting.
Google has documented historical Workspace incidents involving directory settings and autocomplete, but a past incident does not prove that an outage is active now.
Prevent future autocomplete problems
- Save important recipients as regular Google Contacts rather than relying only on automatic suggestions.
- Use consistent names and remove obsolete addresses.
- Review Other contacts periodically, especially if it has accumulated mistyped or temporary addresses.
- Keep a backup before bulk contact deletion or import.
- Use autocomplete as a convenience, not as your only address book.
Google Contacts documents limits of up to 25,000 contacts or 20 MB without photos. A full account can prevent contact updates, although this is unlikely to be the cause of an ordinary one-contact autocomplete problem.
