The usual fix is not a Windows 10 setting. First confirm that your exact Dell configuration has a backlit keyboard, then use the correct backlight key, check Fn-lock, and enable Keyboard Illumination in BIOS. If the light also fails before Windows starts, the problem is more likely unsupported hardware or a failed keyboard, cable, LED circuit, or motherboard connector.
These steps apply to Dell Inspiron, Latitude, XPS, Vostro, G Series, Alienware, and other notebooks, but key locations and software controls vary by model.
Quick fix
- Look for a keyboard-backlight icon on F5, F6, F7, F10, the right-arrow key, or a separate dedicated key.
- Hold Fn and press that key repeatedly to cycle through off, dim, and bright settings.
- If nothing happens, press Fn + Esc once to change Fn-lock mode. Try the backlight key again, both with and without holding Fn.
- Restart the laptop and test the light before opening Windows.
Dell does not use one universal shortcut. Fn + F10 works on some models, but it is not a guaranteed combination. Check the icon and your model’s documentation first. Dell’s backlit-keyboard guide lists the common key locations and model-dependent behavior.

1. Confirm that your Dell keyboard supports backlighting
Dell often sells visually identical laptop configurations with different keyboards. One may have white backlighting, RGB lighting, or zone lighting, while another has no illumination hardware at all.

Check these items before reinstalling drivers:
- Look for a backlight symbol on F5, F6, F7, F10, the right-arrow key, or a dedicated key.
- Enter your Service Tag on Dell Support and review the original configuration and documentation.
- Check the exact model and submodel in its user guide or service manual.
- Run
msinfo32in Windows to view the system model and BIOS version, then verify that model on Dell Support.
The absence of a backlight icon is a strong warning that the keyboard may not be illuminated, although the exact Dell documentation is the final check. If BIOS has no Keyboard Illumination option either, do not assume Windows is hiding a missing feature: the laptop may have been manufactured with a non-backlit keyboard.
2. Check Fn-lock and the correct shortcut
On some Dell laptops, the function row operates as media or special-action keys. That can make a working backlight shortcut appear broken.
- Press Fn + Esc once. On supported Dell systems, this changes the function-key lock mode.
- Press the key showing the backlight icon by itself.
- Try it again while holding Fn.
- Press it repeatedly, allowing a moment between presses, to cycle through the available brightness levels.
If other Fn shortcuts also fail, the issue may involve function-key mode, BIOS configuration, or Dell hotkey support rather than the LEDs themselves. Fn-lock behavior is not identical across every Dell model or BIOS version.
3. Enable Keyboard Illumination in BIOS
BIOS is the most useful test because it checks the keyboard outside the Windows software environment.
- Shut down the laptop completely.
- Turn it on and immediately tap F2 about once per second until BIOS/System Setup opens.
- Open the Keyboard section.
- Find Keyboard Illumination and select the enabled or desired brightness setting.
- Choose Apply Changes, then Exit.
- Boot into Windows and test the backlight shortcut again.
BIOS menu names and locations vary by model and firmware version. If Windows starts before BIOS opens, shut down and try again; repeatedly tapping F2 is preferable to holding it. If the built-in keyboard cannot send F2, an external USB keyboard may work where supported.

Do not change unrelated BIOS settings while troubleshooting. If you later update the BIOS, keep the laptop connected to power and do not interrupt the installation or turn the computer off.
4. Update Dell BIOS and model-specific software
If the correct shortcut does nothing and the illumination option exists, update the firmware offered for your exact Dell model.

- Enter the laptop’s Service Tag, or select the exact model and submodel.
- Confirm the operating system shown on the support page.
- Review available BIOS and driver updates.
- Install the current BIOS offered for that model, if applicable, then restart.
- Install any model-specific keyboard, chipset, hotkey, or power-management component Dell provides.
A BIOS update can resolve firmware-level keyboard behavior or illumination problems, but it is not guaranteed to fix a failed LED circuit. A standard Windows keyboard driver generally handles key input and should not be assumed to control every Dell backlight. Dell hotkey and power-management software may matter on particular models, so install only packages listed for your laptop.
Windows Update is useful for general maintenance, but it is not a substitute for checking Dell’s model-specific support page. Avoid random driver websites, registry edits, and third-party “keyboard light” utilities.
5. Determine whether Windows is involved
If the backlight works before Windows loads
This suggests that the physical keyboard LEDs and their connection can function, although it is not an absolute diagnosis. Concentrate on the BIOS setting, current Dell firmware, Fn-lock, model-specific hotkey software, and power-management behavior.

- Restart after changing BIOS or installing firmware.
- Test while connected to AC power in case a battery-saving profile changes illumination behavior.
- Check the Dell model’s power-management software for documented brightness or timeout controls.
- If the problem began immediately after a Windows or Dell update, note the update date and consider a rollback only when Dell or Microsoft documents a supported option.
Windows’ keyboard troubleshooting tools are mainly for typing and input failures. They may not repair a firmware-controlled backlight. Similarly, uninstalling the keyboard device repeatedly in Device Manager is not a reliable first-line fix for illumination.
If the backlight never works, including in BIOS
The likely possibilities are an unsupported non-backlit configuration, a disabled or unavailable firmware feature, or hardware failure involving the keyboard, ribbon cable, LED circuit, or motherboard connector. If BIOS has no illumination setting and the documentation does not list a backlit keyboard, software troubleshooting will not add the missing hardware.
6. Run Dell preboot diagnostics
If typing also fails, or the light never works outside Windows, run Dell’s preboot hardware tests. Shut down, power on, and use the Dell preboot diagnostics option shown for your model; Dell documents the process in its preboot diagnostics guide.
Look for clues such as failed keys, intermittent input, liquid damage, impact damage, stuck keys, or a loose keyboard ribbon. A USB keyboard can provide temporary input, but it will not restore the laptop’s built-in illumination.
7. Alienware and RGB keyboard exceptions
Alienware and some Dell G-series laptops may use RGB or zone-based lighting rather than a simple single-color backlight. A function key may cycle basic lighting states, while colors, zones, brightness, and effects depend on model-specific Dell or Alienware software.

Do not install Alienware Command Center or another utility solely because the laptop is a Dell. Identify the exact model first and follow its documentation. A failed lighting service or RGB profile is a different problem from a backlight that is completely absent in BIOS.

Contact Dell or a qualified technician when the model definitely supports illumination, BIOS enables it, Fn-lock and the correct shortcut have been tested, the BIOS is current, and the light still fails before Windows loads. Repair is especially appropriate after liquid, hinge, palm-rest, or impact damage, or when the keyboard also has input failures.
Before buying a replacement keyboard, confirm all of the following:
- Exact Dell model and submodel, preferably using the Service Tag.
- Keyboard language and layout.
- Backlit, non-backlit, single-color, or RGB design.
- Compatible part number, connector, and mounting style.
- Whether the part includes the palm rest or requires transferring components.
- Whether Dell’s service manual supports the repair and specifies battery disconnection steps.
A generic keyboard described as “Dell backlit” may not fit or may lack the required connector and firmware support. Do not assume a backlit keyboard can be added simply because a similar chassis was sold with one.
Windows 10 support note
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. These troubleshooting steps remain relevant for an existing Windows 10 installation, but BIOS and driver availability depends on the exact Dell model and its current support status. Any extended-support arrangement is separate from the ordinary Windows 10 lifecycle.

What not to do
- Do not assume every Dell uses Fn + F10.
- Do not treat the problem as a generic Windows driver failure before checking hardware and BIOS.
- Do not edit the registry without model-specific evidence.
- Do not repeatedly remove the standard keyboard device in Device Manager as a backlight fix.
- Do not buy a replacement before verifying the exact backlit configuration.
- Do not interrupt a BIOS update.

Do not assume so. Compatibility depends on the exact model, connector, firmware, mounting, and available part; many configurations cannot be upgraded reliably.
