The most reliable way to download an Xbox screenshot or game clip is to upload it from the console’s Captures app to OneDrive, then download it from OneDrive on your phone, Windows PC, or Mac. You can also copy captures directly to compatible external storage.
Do this before relying on the Xbox network: Xbox says captures stored there may be automatically deleted after 90 days. That deadline applies to the Xbox-network copy, not automatically to a separate OneDrive or external-drive backup. Xbox’s capture-storage announcement identifies OneDrive and external storage as the intended long-term backup options.
What counts as an Xbox capture?
An Xbox capture can be either a still image or a recorded video:

- Screenshot: A single still image captured during gameplay.
- Game clip: A recorded video segment, potentially with audio depending on the capture and privacy settings.
There are also several different places a capture can exist:

- Console storage: The file remains on the Xbox console or attached storage where it was recorded.
- Xbox network: The capture has been uploaded to Xbox’s online capture service. These copies may be deleted after 90 days.
- OneDrive: A separate Microsoft cloud copy created when you choose Upload to OneDrive.
- External storage: A copy transferred to a compatible USB storage device.
Knowing which location you are using matters. Uploading to OneDrive is a backup or transfer step; it should not be treated as a permanent move that automatically removes every other copy.
Download Xbox captures to a Windows PC, Mac, iPhone, or Android phone
Use the console-to-OneDrive method when you want a dependable cross-device transfer.
1. Upload the capture from your Xbox
- Sign in to the Xbox console with the Microsoft account associated with the capture.
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open My games & apps.
- Select See all.
- Open Apps, then launch Captures.
- Select the screenshot or game clip.
- Choose Upload to OneDrive.
The menu wording can vary slightly with console software updates, but the official Xbox path is My games & apps → See all → Apps → Captures. For many files, use the Captures app’s multi-select or bulk-management controls if they are available. If your console does not show a bulk option, upload the files in smaller batches.
2. Download it from OneDrive
Use the same Microsoft account when opening OneDrive. You can use OneDrive on the web, the OneDrive desktop folder, or the OneDrive mobile app.

- Windows PC: Open OneDrive in a browser and select Download, or copy the file from the synced OneDrive folder to a local folder.
- Mac: Open OneDrive.com or the OneDrive Mac app, then download the file or copy it from the synced folder. You do not need the Xbox app for this method.
- iPhone: In the OneDrive app, open the file menu and use the available Save or download option, then export it to Photos or Files.
- Android: In the OneDrive app, use the available download, save, or offline option, then locate the file in the phone’s file manager or gallery.
Mobile labels vary between iOS, Android, and app releases. If you cannot save directly to Photos, download the file to the Files app first and share or export it from there.
Microsoft’s OneDrive guidance also supports downloading multiple selected files; OneDrive may package multiple downloads as a ZIP archive.
Where are Xbox captures stored in OneDrive?
Xbox uploads captures to an Xbox-related folder in OneDrive. The exact label may differ between versions and services. Look for an Xbox capture folder, or browse the Videos folder. Some users see a path such as Videos → Xbox Game DVR.
If you cannot find the folder, search OneDrive using the capture’s file name or browse recent files. First confirm that OneDrive is signed in to the same Microsoft account used on Xbox.

Copy Xbox captures to a USB or external drive
An external drive is often more practical for a large video library or an offline archive.
- Connect a compatible USB storage device to the Xbox.
- Open Captures using Xbox button → My games & apps → See all → Apps → Captures.
- Select a screenshot or clip, or select multiple files if bulk management is available.
- Choose the option to copy or move the captures to external storage.
- Wait for the transfer to finish, then safely remove the drive.
- Connect the drive to your Windows PC or Mac and copy the files to local storage.
Do not assume that every USB drive, format, or setup will work identically. The Xbox may ask you to configure the device for media storage. A drive configured for Xbox games and apps may not behave like an ordinary drive for moving media between devices, so read the prompt shown on your console before accepting a format or configuration change. Xbox’s official announcement describes external storage as a backup destination but does not establish one universal drive configuration for every setup.
Can I download captures from the Xbox app or Xbox.com?
Sometimes, but it is not the method to depend on. Older guides often refer to an Xbox.com capture gallery, a Windows Xbox app download button, or legacy menus that may no longer appear.

The current Windows Xbox app may not expose all captures stored on the Xbox network for browsing and download. Mobile Xbox-app behavior can also differ between iOS, Android, and app releases. Microsoft community discussions describe this inconsistent access, so use the console’s Captures app to send important files to OneDrive or external storage instead of relying on a PC or mobile gallery.

For the same reason, do not assume that a capture visible on Xbox.com can always be downloaded directly. OneDrive is the dependable transfer layer for a Windows PC or Mac.
Why are my Xbox captures missing?
Check the storage locations in this order:
- In the Captures app, check On this Xbox console.
- Check On the Xbox network.
- Search OneDrive, especially the Videos folder and any Xbox Game DVR folder.
- Look for an Expiring soon view or warning indicators in Captures, if your console shows them.
- Confirm that Xbox and OneDrive use the same Microsoft account.
- Check whether the OneDrive upload finished before the console was turned off.
- Check available OneDrive storage.
- If the file was uploaded and later deleted, check the OneDrive Recycle Bin.
- Check the original console or attached storage if the capture was never uploaded.
Captures that were never uploaded may remain only on the console on which they were recorded. If an Xbox-network copy has expired and no local, OneDrive, or external-drive copy exists, recovery may not be possible.

Common causes include insufficient OneDrive capacity, an interrupted connection, a large clip still processing, an account mismatch, a capture already deleted from the available Xbox locations, or a temporary service problem.
- Upload one small screenshot first.
- Confirm that it appears in OneDrive.
- Upload video clips individually or in smaller batches.
- Free OneDrive space if the account is full.
- Verify the Microsoft account on both Xbox and OneDrive.
- Use an external drive if cloud uploads continue to fail.
A screenshot uploading successfully does not prove that a large batch of video clips will fit in the available cloud storage or finish immediately.

What if the downloaded video will not play?
- Wait for OneDrive to finish processing the upload.
- Download the original file instead of relying on the browser preview.
- Check that the downloaded file has a plausible extension and non-zero file size.
- Try a modern media player.
- Delete the incomplete local copy and download it again.
Make a complete local copy before editing. Xbox specifically points to Microsoft Clipchamp for editing captures saved to OneDrive, but an editor cannot repair a download that was interrupted or never finished processing.
How to prevent Xbox captures from disappearing
Do not use the Xbox network as your only archive. For screenshots and clips you want to keep:
- Upload important files to OneDrive from the Captures app.
- Download a local copy to your PC, Mac, or phone.
- Keep especially valuable videos on an external drive as a second backup.
- Periodically check that the backups open correctly and that your OneDrive account has available capacity.
This gives you separate copies rather than relying on a single Xbox-network location subject to the 90-day deletion policy.

For most people, the shortest dependable answer is Xbox Captures → Upload to OneDrive → download from OneDrive. For many large clips, external storage may be faster and avoids consuming OneDrive space.
