Not yet. Scientists have not injected astronauts with tardigrade material. A 2025 study tested nanoparticles carrying mRNA instructions for a tardigrade protein called Dsup in cells and mice. The researchers found less radiation-related DNA damage in selected tissues, and suggested that the approach might eventually be relevant to spaceflight. That is a possible future application—not a demonstrated astronaut treatment.
What the researchers actually injected
The material was not tardigrade RNA harvested from the animals, nor a permanent tardigrade gene inserted into human DNA. It was messenger RNA (mRNA) packaged in nanoparticles. The mRNA carried temporary instructions for cells to make Dsup, short for damage suppressor protein, a tardigrade-associated protein linked to protection against DNA damage.
In the study, published in Nature Biomedical Engineering on February 26, 2025, the team tested the approach in cell systems and mice. They delivered the nanoparticles locally to oral and rectal epithelial tissues before radiation exposure. NIH’s summary reports that Dsup production peaked about six hours after injection and then declined, consistent with a temporary protein-making instruction rather than lasting genetic modification.
Dsup is thought to bind DNA or chromatin and make DNA less vulnerable to some radiation-related damage. Structural research describes it as a largely intrinsically disordered protein that interacts with DNA through multiple contacts. This is not the same as shielding the body from radiation or repairing every kind of injury radiation can cause.

What the mouse experiments found—and what they did not
The researchers reported reduced measures of radiation-induced DNA damage and improved cell viability in the treated normal tissues. In an oral-cancer mouse model, local Dsup-mRNA delivery protected normal tissue without preserving the radiation-treated tumor in the tested setup. That result is encouraging for the study’s cancer-therapy context, but it does not establish that the method is safe or effective across tissues, radiation doses, tumors, or species.
In particular, “less DNA damage” is not equivalent to preventing cancer, radiation sickness, neurological effects, or all other consequences of exposure. The experiment used specific delivery sites and controlled radiation conditions. It did not test whole-body protection, human volunteers, astronauts, or the full mixture of radiation encountered on a long space mission.
The distinction matters because protection can have a downside: radiation-damaged cells that would otherwise die or be removed might survive. Any treatment intended to protect healthy tissue must be shown not to give precancerous or cancerous cells an unintended advantage. The mouse tumor result is relevant evidence, but it cannot settle that question for other cancers, organs, or delivery methods.

Why astronauts came up
Beyond Earth’s protective atmosphere and magnetic environment, crews can be exposed to solar energetic particles and galactic cosmic rays; trapped radiation also matters in Earth’s magnetic environment. NASA identifies potential consequences that include cancer, cardiovascular and degenerative disease, effects on the central nervous system, and acute radiation injury. Long missions are especially challenging because exposure can be prolonged, solar events can cause sudden increases, and cosmic rays include energetic heavy ions that are difficult to shield against.
The proposed connection is straightforward but still speculative: if a short-lived Dsup treatment can reduce DNA damage in selected healthy tissues, a related biological countermeasure might one day complement spacecraft shielding and mission procedures. The researchers discussed astronauts as a possible future application, not as participants in a current flight or clinical program. NASA also says important uncertainties remain about long-duration space-radiation risks and the protections needed for missions beyond low Earth orbit (NASA’s space-radiation overview).
Why this is not an astronaut injection
The mouse study used local delivery to particular tissues. A spaceflight countermeasure would have to address the body more broadly, including organs that were not tested. Delivering mRNA to the right cells, controlling how much Dsup they make, and keeping the effect useful for the duration of an exposure are unresolved problems. Repeated doses might be required, but repeated dosing could change the safety profile.

There is also an immune hurdle. Dsup is a foreign protein, and the researchers have identified the possibility of an immune response as a major concern. A redesigned version might be less likely to trigger one, but changing the protein could also alter its protective effect or introduce other biological effects. The nanoparticle delivery system would need its own safety evaluation as well. MIT’s account of the study describes immune compatibility as an area the team planned to investigate.
Space radiation also is not simply a more intense version of a routine medical X-ray. A useful countermeasure would need to be tested against relevant exposures, including protons and heavy ions, and in conditions that help predict prolonged or variable exposure. Researchers would also need to establish biodistribution, dose, duration, repeat-dose safety, effects on DNA repair and cell division, and whether any protection could help abnormal cells survive.
Finally, a mission-ready treatment has practical requirements: stable storage, dependable administration, and evidence that it works under the physiological and logistical conditions of spaceflight. Before any human use, a candidate would need the usual progression of toxicology and phased clinical testing. The mouse findings do not skip those steps.

Dsup is not the whole tardigrade survival system
Tardigrades are not radiation-proof because of one magic molecule. Their responses involve DNA repair, antioxidant defenses, stress responses, and biology that varies among species. Research has found strong activation of DNA-repair pathways in at least one species after ionizing radiation, while some radiation-tolerant species apparently lack a Dsup counterpart. A review of tardigrade radiation research likewise cautions against treating one protein as a complete explanation.
That broader biology matters for translation: giving human cells Dsup would not make them equivalent to tardigrade cells, and it would not recreate all the mechanisms that help tardigrades withstand stress. The review of tardigrade radiation resistance and research on species-specific repair responses help put the protein’s role in context.
What might come next
A credible path toward human testing would require evidence that delivery reaches the relevant cells; that the dose and duration protect without unacceptable harm; that repeat dosing is tolerable; and that the approach works against space-relevant radiation. Safety studies would need to examine immune responses, unintended effects on DNA regulation and cell survival, and the risk of protecting tumors. Only after that would human trials be appropriate, and astronaut use would require still more evidence about mission conditions and logistics.

Other research directions do not change the status of the 2025 result. A 2026 preclinical paper proposed Dsup-modified blood-forming stem and progenitor cells. That is a cell-engineering strategy, not an mRNA injection for astronauts, and it has not established a human spaceflight treatment.
For now, NASA’s radiation approach remains a combination of shielding, exposure monitoring, operational procedures, and medical-countermeasure research. A biological treatment, if one eventually proves safe and effective, would be a supplement to those measures—not a replacement for them. NASA describes its broader radiation work and countermeasure context here.
