AMC did not remove a feature film from its regular movie schedule. The controversy involved Thanksgiving Day, an AI-generated animated short that was scheduled for a limited preshow placement through Screenvision Media after winning the inaugural Frame Forward AI Animated Film Festival. Following online backlash, AMC said its locations would not participate in the initiative.

What happened?

Thanksgiving Day, a short film created by Kazakhstani filmmaker Igor Alferov, won the first Frame Forward AI Animated Film Festival. The reported prize included a two-week theatrical run in the United States.

That did not mean a conventional feature-film release. The short was intended to play before feature presentations, during the advertising and entertainment preshow supplied through Screenvision Media. Some users reported seeing it at select AMC locations, while coverage also reported that it was removed from Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre.

As criticism spread on social media in February 2026, AMC said the placement was a Screenvision initiative. The company said Screenvision preshow packages operated in fewer than 30% of AMC’s U.S. locations, that AMC had not been involved in creating the content or the initiative, and that it told Screenvision AMC locations would not participate.

Fast Company reported the timeline and AMC’s response, which was also summarized by other outlets.

What is Thanksgiving Day?

The film is an AI-generated animated short about a bear and a platypus assistant traveling through space in a spacecraft resembling a dumpster. The pair encounter comic and bureaucratic obstacles during their journey.

Reports identified Google Gemini 3.1 and Nano Banana Pro as tools used in the project. That description should be treated as reported information, not as a complete production breakdown: the available coverage does not document which elements were scripted, generated, edited, composited, voiced, or otherwise created by people.

Why was AMC associated with the film?

For moviegoers, the theater chain is the visible brand on the cinema screen. That made AMC a natural target for complaints, even though AMC said the relevant preshow initiative came from Screenvision.

Screenvision supplies advertising and entertainment packages to participating cinemas. The reported “fewer than 30%” figure refers to AMC locations carrying Screenvision preshow packages; it does not prove that this particular short played in 30% of AMC theaters, or that it appeared nationwide.

The reported sequence was:

  1. The festival prize included a proposed two-week theatrical placement.
  2. Screenvision handled the relevant preshow initiative.
  3. Social-media criticism focused on AMC and the use of AI-generated content in cinemas.
  4. AMC said its locations would not participate.

Accordingly, “AMC pulled an AI film from its cinemas” is shorthand. The more precise description is that AMC withdrew from a Screenvision-linked preshow placement after public backlash.

Why did viewers object?

The criticism combined several different concerns.

  • Labor and authorship: Some viewers objected to AI-generated work receiving cinema exposure while filmmakers, animators, artists, and other creative workers are concerned about AI displacing paid human labor.
  • Perceived quality: Online commenters criticized the short as low-quality or “slop”-like. Those are reactions, not an objective industry assessment of the film.
  • Audience consent: Some moviegoers disliked encountering AI-generated material unexpectedly during a paid theater visit rather than choosing to watch it as an explicitly labeled experiment.
  • Programming standards: The placement raised questions about whether a preshow slot should be treated differently from a film selected for the main theatrical program.

These issues should not be collapsed into one claim about public opinion. Some criticism targeted the film’s apparent execution; other criticism targeted generative AI itself and its effect on creative work.

Was the film shown at AMC?

The safest answer is: it was reported in the preshow at some AMC locations, or was scheduled to appear there, before AMC said those locations would not participate.

The available reporting does not establish that every AMC theater showed it, that most AMC theaters showed it, or that the short received a regular nationwide theatrical release. “Nationwide” referred to the reported prize package and intended distribution, not proof of universal screening.

Did AMC ban AI-generated films?

No broad AMC ban on AI-generated films can be inferred from this incident. AMC’s reported decision concerned this particular Screenvision initiative and placement. It did not amount to a stated policy covering every AI-assisted or AI-generated film.

It also does not prove that audiences reject all AI-assisted filmmaking. The backlash involved one short, its perceived quality, its method of production, and the circumstances in which viewers encountered it.

What happened at other theaters?

Coverage reported that the short appeared at, or was scheduled for, TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and was subsequently removed there as well. That does not establish that every other Screenvision customer screened or removed it. Individual exhibitors may have made separate decisions.

What happens next?

Festival organizers and Modern Uprising Studios reportedly said the cinema placement was only the beginning and discussed adapting Thanksgiving Day for a planned immersive theatrical venue in New York City. That was a future proposal, not evidence that the venue opened or that the adaptation was completed.

The film’s current availability after the reported withdrawals has not been established by the available coverage.

Why this small incident matters

The episode illustrates how a short preshow slot can become an industry-wide argument about AI.

First, exhibition and programming responsibility can be difficult for audiences to see. A theater may carry material supplied by a third-party preshow network without commissioning or producing it. Second, labeling and audience expectations matter: a festival experiment may be received differently when viewers knowingly seek it out than when it appears before a movie they paid to watch. Third, quality and provenance are separate questions. A viewer can dislike the film’s execution, object to its production method, or both.

Finally, the incident shows the reputational risk of using a cinema placement to introduce controversial technology. A limited theatrical slot can provide publicity, but the same visibility can turn a small distribution arrangement into a public-relations problem.

Bottom line

AMC did not commission a feature film and then remove it from its normal schedule. The incident involved Thanksgiving Day, an AI-generated short by Igor Alferov, placed or intended for placement in a Screenvision preshow package after winning an AI film festival. After online backlash, AMC said its locations would not participate. That is a withdrawal from a specific third-party preshow initiative—not a general ban on AI films.
