If your Google Pixel shows “Enter reason: boot failure” in Fastboot Mode, the phone’s bootloader has started but Android has not loaded successfully. The message is a symptom, not a diagnosis: a failed update, damaged software, invalid boot slot, power event, security-metadata problem, storage failure, or hardware fault could be responsible.
Start with the non-destructive steps below. Do not factory-reset, unlock the bootloader, erase partitions, or flash a random firmware file until you decide whether the data stored on the phone is worth protecting. A factory reset and many flashing procedures permanently erase local data.
Which phones does this guide cover?
The menu names and button sequence in this guide apply primarily to Google Pixel phones, including recent Pixel generations. Other Android phones may use different Fastboot menus, button combinations, recovery tools, and firmware procedures.

- Device state: locked, unlocked, or error.
- Boot slot: usually slot A or B on devices using seamless updates.
- Secure boot: for example, production status.
- NOS production: including any error value.
- Enter reason: such as boot failure or a button event.
These fields help Google or a repair technician, but they do not provide a complete diagnosis. For example, Device state: error or NOS production: error can point to a deeper firmware, security, storage, or hardware problem, but their exact meaning is model-specific.
What “Enter reason: boot failure” means
Fastboot is the phone’s bootloader environment. It runs before Android and provides limited recovery and firmware-management options. The message means the bootloader could not continue to a valid Android boot and entered this screen instead.
It does not prove that the motherboard, battery, boot partition, or Android update has failed. Some owners report seeing the screen after a battery drain or update, while others see it without an obvious trigger. Those reports describe possible scenarios, not a definitive cause for your phone.

Holding the wrong button during startup can deliberately enter Fastboot Mode, so remove the case and check that the buttons click normally.
Before trying a fix: protect your data
Important: If the phone cannot boot Android and Recovery is the only working route, there may be no supported way to save locally stored data before a reset or repair. Do not select a wipe option until you have decided that your data is backed up elsewhere or that restoring the phone is more important.
- Remove the case and check that Volume Down and Power are not stuck.
- Disconnect USB accessories, hubs, and external devices.
- Charge the phone using a known-good charger and cable. A drained battery can precede the problem, although that does not prove the battery caused it.
- Photograph the Fastboot screen, including all error fields and the boot slot.
- Write down whether the phone was recently updated, dropped, exposed to liquid, overheated, rooted, unlocked, or flashed.
- If data recovery matters, do not unlock the bootloader, factory-reset the phone, erase partitions, or flash unofficial files.
Safe fixes that do not intentionally erase data
1. Select Start
On the Fastboot screen, use the volume buttons to highlight Start, then press Power once. This is the least destructive option and may resolve a one-time bootloader glitch.
If Android starts, immediately back up important photos, messages, authentication codes, and other data. If the phone returns to Fastboot, continue rather than repeatedly selecting Start.

2. Try Restart bootloader once
Highlight Restart bootloader and press Power. This reloads the bootloader but does not repair corrupted Android files. If it returns to the same screen, move on to Recovery Mode.
3. Force-restart the phone once
On Pixel 6 and later, Google documents holding the Power and Volume Down buttons for up to 30 seconds to enter or control Fastboot Mode. A forced restart is worth trying once, but holding the buttons too long can restart the phone or return it to Fastboot. Do not keep repeating the attempt if the result is unchanged.
Earlier Pixel models use different button combinations. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than applying a sequence from another Pixel generation.
4. Check Recovery Mode without wiping
- Highlight Recovery mode in Fastboot and press Power.
- If the phone shows No command, hold the Power button.
- While holding Power, press and release Volume Up.
- Release Power when the Android Recovery menu appears.
Reaching Recovery is useful because it shows that another part of the boot chain is working. Do not select Wipe data/factory reset merely because it is visible. First decide whether losing local data is acceptable.

A factory reset erases user data stored on the phone. This includes locally stored app data, photos that were not backed up, messages, downloads, and accounts saved on the device.
Google’s documented Pixel Recovery path is:
- Select Wipe data/factory reset.
- Select Factory data reset.
- Wait for Data wipe complete.
- Select Reboot system now.
A reset can fix software corruption when Android’s data or system state is unusable, but it cannot repair a failing storage chip, damaged button, defective power circuit, or broader secure-boot problem. If Recovery immediately returns to Fastboot, or if your data is important, stop before wiping and seek model-specific support.
Use Google’s software-repair options carefully
For a stock Pixel that is recognized by Google’s supported repair workflow, try Google’s official Pixel software-repair route before using unofficial flashing tools. The available tool name, supported models, browser requirements, and whether a particular operation preserves data can change, so follow the current instructions shown by Google.

- the process reports a model or build mismatch;
- the repair fails repeatedly; or
- the tool warns that data will be erased and you have not accepted that consequence.
Full OTA versus factory-image flashing
Advanced users may consider installing official Pixel firmware, but these are not interchangeable recovery recipes.
Google says full OTA packages are generally easier and safer than factory images for many stock-device recovery situations. Full OTA sideloading normally does not require an unlocked bootloader and is intended to avoid the data wipe associated with a factory image, although compatibility and device state still matter.
Factory images restore original firmware but normally erase data. Unlocking the bootloader typically wipes the phone, reduces its security, and may not be possible from the current state. Never use a firmware file for a different Pixel model, region, build, or release.

Advanced diagnosis: Fastboot, ADB, and boot slots
If you have a computer and understand the risks, the only broadly safe command-level check is whether the bootloader is visible:

fastboot devicesA device identifier suggests that the computer can communicate with Fastboot. It does not mean Android is repairable or that your files are accessible.
adb devices is different. ADB generally requires Android to be running and USB debugging to have been enabled previously. A phone visible in Fastboot will not normally appear through ADB, so ADB is not a universal fix for this screen.

Modern Pixels may use A/B update slots. A failed update can leave one slot incomplete or unbootable, but the slot shown on the screen is not proof that manually changing to the other slot will fix the phone. Using commands such as fastboot set_active, bootloader unlock, partition erase, or format without exact model-specific instructions can make the situation worse or erase data.
May 2026 and newer Pixel firmware caveat: Google’s documentation, updated July 7, 2026, describes a special anti-rollback and inactive-slot issue affecting certain Pixel flashing sequences involving the May 2026 Android 16 release. For affected models and builds, Google instructs users to ensure both slots contain bootable images by sideloading the corresponding full OTA after successfully booting the updated system. Do not apply older generic slot-switching tutorials to a Pixel that received the relevant 2026 update; check Google’s current page for the exact models and conditions.
When the problem is probably a repair issue
Arrange an assessment instead of continuing with generic tutorials when:
- Start, Restart bootloader, and Recovery Mode all return to Fastboot;
- Recovery cannot load or immediately loops back;
- the computer cannot detect the phone reliably;
- the screen shows persistent security, production, storage, or device-state errors;
- the problem began after a drop, liquid exposure, port repair, or severe overheating;
- the phone charges abnormally, shuts down, or will not remain powered on;
- a physical button is damaged or stuck; or
- an official, model-specific software-repair attempt fails.
Persistent failure does not automatically mean the phone is permanently bricked. It does mean the remaining possibilities include deeper firmware, security, storage, power, or hardware faults that generic button combinations may not fix.
What to do if data recovery is the priority
Do not factory-reset, unlock the bootloader, flash or erase partitions, or repeatedly experiment with active slots. Tell Google support or a reputable technician that preserving data is the priority and ask whether non-destructive diagnosis is possible.

There is no guarantee that data can be recovered from a locked, non-booting Pixel. Modern device encryption and secure-boot protections can make inaccessible data impossible to extract, even for a repair professional. Do not give the phone to a shop without discussing privacy, data handling, and whether the proposed repair includes a reset or replacement.
Google repair and authorized service
Google’s repair availability depends on the country, model, warranty status, damage type, and repair channel. In the United States, Google lists mail-in and walk-in options, including authorized partners such as Asurion and uBreakiFix. Other regions have different options.
Before sending the device in, check Google’s repair preparation guidance, warranty eligibility, and current repair choices. Note the IMEI and model, keep photographs of the Fastboot screen, and ask for an estimate before approving out-of-warranty work.
Google identifies iFixit as a source for genuine parts and repair guides. Parts and button, port, or battery repairs may suit an experienced technician when there is clear physical evidence of failure. Replacing parts is unlikely to fix unexplained secure-boot, storage, or firmware errors, and opening the phone can affect water resistance or warranty status.
Common advice that can make things worse
- “Just press Power.” This helps only if the phone can still boot or entered Fastboot accidentally.
- “Switch to the other slot.” Slot behavior is model- and build-dependent, and the other slot may be incomplete or incompatible.
- “Use any factory image.” The image must match the exact device and firmware requirements, and factory-image installation normally erases data.
- “Unlock and reflash it.” Unlocking usually wipes the phone, reduces security, and may be unavailable.
- “The motherboard is dead.” The screen alone cannot establish that diagnosis.
- “ADB will fix it.” ADB and Fastboot are different tools, and ADB generally requires a running Android system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is “boot failure” the same as a bricked phone?
No. It means Android failed to boot and the bootloader displayed Fastboot Mode. The phone may still be recoverable, although repeated failure across Start, Recovery, and official repair tools can indicate a deeper fault.
Will pressing Power erase my data?
Selecting Start or restarting the bootloader does not intentionally erase data. Factory reset, bootloader unlocking, and many flashing procedures do.
Can I fix Fastboot Mode without unlocking the bootloader?
Sometimes. Start, Recovery troubleshooting, Google’s supported repair workflow, and a compatible full OTA may work without unlocking. The available options depend on the model, build, and device state.
Should I change the active boot slot?
Not as a universal fix. Slot switching is model- and firmware-dependent and can worsen an incomplete or incompatible update, especially under Google’s newer anti-rollback guidance.
What if the phone was rooted or had a custom ROM?
Generic stock-Pixel instructions become less reliable. Record the modifications, bootloader state, patched images, and slot changes, then use instructions specific to that exact software configuration.
Should I use a repair shop?
Yes, if Recovery fails, every menu item loops, security or production errors persist, the phone suffered physical damage, or data preservation matters. Discuss reset, replacement, privacy, and data-recovery limits before authorizing work.
