In mid-January 2025, Americans looking for a TikTok alternative landed on RedNote, where introductions and requests for cat photos appeared alongside English homework, questions about life in China and a surprising amount of Luigi Mangione content. The moment was real, but “obsessed” overstates what the evidence shows: Mangione became a conspicuous meme, not a proven fixation shared by RedNote’s users at large.
Why Americans suddenly joined RedNote
The rush came as the January 19, 2025 deadline for TikTok’s U.S. sale-or-ban law approached. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law shortly before the deadline, prompting some TikTok users to look for alternatives. RedNote became both a practical destination and a protest gesture: some newcomers called themselves “TikTok refugees” and joked about leaving one Chinese-owned app for another. Others were curious, wanted to keep a social-media community together or were interested in talking directly with Chinese users. NPR’s account of the migration describes the rush and its context.
The spike was substantial, though the numbers describe different things. A person close to the company told Reuters that RedNote gained more than 700,000 new users in two days; that was a reported estimate, not an official public tally, and the newcomers were not necessarily all American. The app also reached the top of the U.S. free-download charts. Sensor Tower data cited by NPR showed U.S. downloads rising more than 20 times week over week in the period beginning January 8, and more than 30 times compared with the same period in 2024. Downloads, registrations and ongoing users are not interchangeable measures. Nor should those figures be confused with RedNote’s overall audience: reports put the platform at roughly 300 million users, a figure attributed to reporting rather than audited company disclosure.

RedNote is more than a TikTok clone
RedNote is the English-market name commonly used for Xiaohongshu, the Chinese name usually translated as “Little Red Book.” They are names for the same app, not separate services. The company’s founder has said the name referred to the red associated with his alma mater, rather than Mao Zedong’s quotations book, according to The Guardian.

RedNote has short videos, but also photo galleries, text recommendations, search and discovery, messaging, livestreams and shopping. Its lifestyle focus—beauty, travel, food and product recommendations—has led to comparisons with Instagram and Pinterest as well as TikTok. That mix matters: the app is designed for browsing and recommendations, not just for watching an endless stream of short clips.
Unlike the separate domestic and international services associated with Douyin and TikTok, RedNote brought Chinese and foreign users into one platform. That made cross-language encounters possible in shared feeds, comments and chats. It did not make the service an unmoderated window into China: recommendations, language barriers and platform rules all shaped what people saw.

What the cross-cultural encounter looked like
New American users posted introductions and asked questions; Chinese users asked for help with English homework. People traded language help and asked about everyday life, including grocery costs, slang and youth unemployment. Requests for “cat tax” and “dog tax”—internet shorthand for posting a pet photo—became a friendly way to break the ice. Some users joked about being “Chinese spies.” NPR and The Guardian’s reporting on the influx documented these exchanges, including large group chats formed around the newcomers.
The novelty cut both ways. Some Chinese users welcomed the attention and cultural exchange; others worried that a sudden wave of English-language posts could overwhelm an existing community or bring stereotypes and unwanted attention. A shared app enabled contact, not universal agreement or equal comfort with the change.

Why Luigi Mangione appeared so often
Mangione became one of the most conspicuous recurring memes in the cross-cultural feed. RedNote posts included fan edits, cosplay, latte art and makeup inspired by his mug shot. The platform’s image-heavy beauty and lifestyle culture offered familiar formats for that material: a face could become a makeup reference, a celebrity-style edit or a joke about internet fandom. That is a plausible explanation for why the content fit the feed, not a measured finding about RedNote’s recommendation algorithm.
The attention also arrived amid an existing U.S. online fascination with Mangione and anger at the health-insurance industry. Some people cast him as a folk-hero-like figure; others engaged with the case through celebrity culture, appearance or questions of due process. Those motives should not be collapsed into one explanation, and the reporting does not show that most Chinese users shared any particular political view. As of The Guardian’s January 16, 2025 report, Mangione had been charged with murder in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and had pleaded not guilty. The viral posts were about a defendant in a criminal case, not proof of guilt.

So the headline’s “obsessed” is best read as a flourish about striking examples, not a description of the platform’s whole user base. News coverage documented conspicuous Mangione fandom; it did not survey RedNote users or establish that the majority were fixated on him.

A new platform did not mean a clean break on privacy or speech
Some Americans had objected to TikTok over concerns about data and Chinese ownership, yet RedNote raised a similar category of questions. The app’s terms were largely in Mandarin, leaving many English-speaking newcomers unsure what they agreed to. Cybersecurity commentators warned about extensive data collection and possible sharing with third parties or Chinese authorities. Those warnings are not evidence that authorities accessed a particular user’s data, and the cited coverage does not establish a specific breach.

There was also a separate issue: content moderation. RedNote operates in China’s regulated internet environment, and users discussed limits affecting politically sensitive topics as well as rules around links, nudity, profanity and LGBTQ-related discussion. These concerns are related to the broader setting but are not the same as proving a particular government data access. Privacy policies, data handling, moderation and state censorship are distinct questions; a viral migration did not answer them.
For newcomers, other practical trade-offs included translation friction, uncertainty about moderation and the possibility that posts or accounts would not be treated as they expected. RedNote’s shared user base created a rare opportunity for direct exchange, but sharing a platform does not guarantee unrestricted speech.
Was RedNote a lasting TikTok replacement?
The evidence establishes a sharp January 2025 influx, not durable migration. A No. 1 free-download ranking measures downloads over a period, not long-term use; the reported new-user estimates do not reveal how many people stayed after the immediate TikTok crisis passed. The available reporting does not establish that RedNote permanently displaced TikTok among Americans.

For users seeking an alternative specifically to avoid China-related concerns, that made the choice an uneasy one. The episode was less a settled platform switch than a brief collision of protest, curiosity, internet fandom and two user communities that rarely met in the same digital space.
