Use this Intune assignment-filter rule to target Windows Enterprise multi-session Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) session hosts:
(device.operatingSystemSKU -eq "ServerRdsh")ServerRdsh is Microsoft Intune’s operating-system SKU value for Windows 10/11 Enterprise multi-session. It is a reliable way to distinguish commonly used pooled AVD session hosts from ordinary Windows client devices—but it is not a universal detector for every AVD virtual machine.
What an Intune filter solves
Intune assignments normally target users or device groups. An assignment filter narrows that eligible population by evaluating device or app properties. This lets you assign an application, configuration profile, compliance policy, or other supported workload to a broad group while limiting processing to the devices that meet a specific condition.

A filter can apply an AVD-specific policy only when the assignment is evaluated against a Windows Enterprise multi-session host. Conversely, you can exclude those hosts from a policy designed for physical endpoints.

Eligible user or device group

Device check-in and policy processingA filter does not enroll a VM, create an AVD session host, change its operating system, or replace the assignment group. It only refines the devices that qualify after the group assignment has established the eligible population.
What ServerRdsh means
The filter uses the operatingSystemSKU property:
(device.operatingSystemSKU -eq "ServerRdsh")Microsoft documents ServerRdsh as the SKU value for Windows 10/11 Enterprise multi-session, with OS SKU number 175. See Microsoft’s current Intune assignment-filter property reference.
This rule identifies the operating-system characteristic reported by the managed device. It does not inspect the Azure subscription, resource group, host-pool name, VM resource type, or AVD registration state. Therefore, it is best understood as a filter for Windows Enterprise multi-session devices that are commonly used as AVD session hosts—not as an Azure-resource query.

Prerequisites
- The AVD VMs must be enrolled in Intune and visible as managed devices.
- The app, configuration profile, compliance policy, or other workload must support assignment filters.
- You need Intune permissions that allow you to create and manage filters and edit the relevant assignment.
- Create the filter for Managed devices, not managed apps, when filtering enrolled AVD session hosts.
- Scope tags and Intune RBAC can limit which filters and devices an administrator can view or manage.
- Have at least one expected matching session host and one expected nonmatching device available for validation.
Microsoft’s AVD management guidance and AVD prerequisites should be checked alongside Intune requirements. Intune enrollment and AVD licensing or operating-system eligibility are separate concerns.
Create the AVD multi-session filter
- Open the Microsoft Intune admin center.
- Go to Tenant administration > Assignment filters. The exact entry point can vary slightly with the current admin-center experience; related filter controls may also appear in device or app administration areas.
- Select Create.
- Select Managed devices as the filter type.
- On Basics, enter a descriptive name such as
AVD - Windows Enterprise Multi-session. - Add a description that states the filter’s scope and intended use.
- Set the platform to Windows.
- Continue to Rules, then select Edit or open the rule builder.
- Choose Operating System SKU (the
operatingSystemSKUproperty), set the operator to Equals, and enterServerRdsh. - Confirm that the generated rule is exactly:
(device.operatingSystemSKU -eq "ServerRdsh")- Continue through review and select Create.
Use Microsoft’s filter-property reference as the authority for supported properties, operators, and values. Older articles may refer to “MEM Intune,” “Azure AD,” or older portal labels; the current terminology is Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Entra ID.

Preview and validate matching devices
If Filter preview or Device preview is available in your tenant, use it before attaching the filter to a production assignment. Confirm that:
- Expected Windows Enterprise multi-session AVD session hosts appear.
- Standard Windows laptops and desktops do not appear.
- The devices are enrolled, recently checked in, and visible to your administrative scope.
Then test the actual assignment with one positive and one negative device. Review the relevant app or policy assignment-status reports and device-status reports. If you have just enrolled a VM or changed its configuration, allow for Intune evaluation and a device check-in; filter processing is not necessarily instantaneous.

Other assignment, applicability, platform, or workload conditions can also produce that status.
Apply the filter to an app, policy, or profile
- Open the relevant Intune workload and create or edit the app, configuration profile, compliance policy, or other supported assignment.
- Select the user or device group that should be eligible for the assignment.
- Open the filter control, usually labelled Edit filter or Add filter.
- Choose Include filtered devices in assignment and select the AVD multi-session filter when only matching hosts should receive the workload.
- Choose Exclude filtered devices from assignment when the broader group should receive the workload except for Windows Enterprise multi-session hosts.
- Review the assignment summary and save.
For example, a configuration profile assigned to “All AVD administrators” with the filter in Include mode will process only the group’s devices whose reported SKU is ServerRdsh. A physical-device hardening policy assigned broadly with the same filter in Exclude mode will omit those multi-session hosts.
Always verify that the specific workload and assignment type expose filter controls in your tenant. Intune does not present identical filter options for every workload.

Multi-session and single-session AVD are different cases
Windows Enterprise multi-session
For Windows Enterprise multi-session hosts, the SKU filter is the cleanest discriminator:
(device.operatingSystemSKU -eq "ServerRdsh")It avoids dependence on a hostname convention and remains useful when session hosts are added or replaced, provided they continue to use the expected multi-session operating system.
Windows single-session AVD
Single-session AVD VMs generally use a standard Windows client SKU. They therefore will not match ServerRdsh and can look like physical Windows devices from Intune’s perspective.
Possible alternatives include a controlled device-name prefix, a dedicated device group, or another supported device property that your inventory exposes reliably. A hostname-based example is:
(device.deviceName -startsWith "AVD-SINGLE-")Use this approach only when the naming standard is enforced during image creation and VM deployment. Microsoft’s AVD session-host documentation shows naming patterns such as hp01-sh-0, but an organization should not assume that every deployment uses the same prefix or that a name alone proves a VM is an AVD host. A dedicated device group is often preferable when the same single-session devices must also be used for access control, Conditional Access targeting, automation, or reporting—not just Intune assignment refinement.
Assignment filter versus dynamic device group

Neither option is universally better. Use the filter when the need is assignment-level targeting based on current device properties. Use a dynamic or dedicated group when the population must drive broader identity, access, automation, or operational workflows.

No devices match
- Confirm that the VM is enrolled in Intune and appears as a managed device.
- Check that the VM reports Windows Enterprise multi-session, rather than Windows Enterprise, Professional, or another standard client SKU.
- Confirm that the filter type is Managed devices.
- Check the exact value and capitalization:
ServerRdsh. - Verify that the VM has checked in recently.
- Confirm that the device or relevant user is in the assignment group.
- Check scope tags and RBAC visibility.
Single-session hosts are missing
This is expected when the filter is based on ServerRdsh. Create a separate targeting strategy for single-session hosts, using a controlled name prefix, dedicated group, or another reliable supported property.
Unexpected devices appear
Inspect the reported OS SKU of the device. Confirm that the rule was not changed to a broad operator such as contains or replaced with an overly broad name-based condition. Use preview before expanding the assignment.

The assignment shows Not applicable
Compare filter preview with assignment membership, workload applicability rules, platform requirements, licensing, and recent check-in data. “Not applicable” alone cannot identify which condition prevented processing.

The filter option is unavailable
Check whether the specific workload and assignment type supports filters in the current Intune admin center. The availability of filter controls can differ across apps, policies, profiles, and other workloads.
Operational cautions for shared AVD hosts
Correct targeting does not make every endpoint policy suitable for a multi-session VM. Several operational differences require separate validation:
- Multiple users share the same device, so a device-level change can affect many sessions.
- Per-user and per-device settings can behave differently on a shared host.
- An application installed on the VM or its shared image can affect every user.
- Session hosts may be replaced, scaled out, or rebuilt, making device-level state less durable than image-based configuration.
- Compliance, remediation, security, and application policies designed for one-user-per-device scenarios may need separate testing.
The filter answers “which managed devices should receive this assignment?” It does not answer “is this payload operationally appropriate for a pooled or personal AVD design?” Test the workload on representative session hosts before broad deployment.
Windows 10 and current terminology
The original HTMD article was published on August 23, 2024 and described the workflow using terminology and portal labels from that period, including “public preview” language. Microsoft’s current filter reference, updated April 16, 2026, documents ServerRdsh for Windows 10/11 Enterprise multi-session.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Intune may still permit certain Windows 10 management or filtering scenarios, but support status, feature availability, and guarantees must be assessed separately. For new deployments, treat Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session as the forward-looking focus and consult Microsoft’s current filter reference and AVD prerequisites.
Native Microsoft tooling is usually enough
The native design is straightforward: Azure Virtual Desktop provides the virtual desktop platform, Intune manages enrolled devices and policies, and assignment filters target Windows Enterprise multi-session hosts. A third-party AVD-management platform may be useful for large-scale automation, image orchestration, scaling, governance, or cost optimization, but it is not required to create or evaluate this Intune filter.
Review official information for Microsoft Intune and Azure Virtual Desktop. Licensing for Intune, Windows Enterprise multi-session, Microsoft 365 Apps, and Azure consumption is separate and depends on the organization’s subscription, agreement, geography, VM usage, storage, and networking. Buying Intune alone does not automatically grant every AVD or Windows entitlement.
