The Galaxy Z Flip7 is a substantial hardware upgrade over the Flip6, especially when closed. Its larger, brighter 4.1-inch FlexWindow, thinner design, refined hinge and more conventional inner display make it Samsung’s most polished flip phone yet. But Samsung’s software still treats that excellent outer display as a controlled widget and notification panel rather than a genuinely open second screen.
That makes the Flip7 an easy recommendation for Samsung users who want a better flip phone and quick closed-screen interactions. It is a less convincing upgrade for Flip6 owners, and a poor fit for anyone expecting unrestricted Android app use without configuring Labs and MultiStar.
The Flip7’s biggest improvement is also its biggest frustration
Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Flip7 in the U.S. on July 9, 2025, with general availability beginning July 25. Its launch price was $1,099.99 for the 256GB model; that is a historical launch price, not a statement about the current price in September 2026.

The Flip6 had a 3.4-inch folder-shaped panel. The Flip7 replaces it with an edge-to-edge 4.1-inch FlexWindow measuring 948 × 1048 pixels, supporting up to 120Hz refresh and Samsung-rated peak brightness of up to 2,600 nits. Samsung’s specifications and launch announcement make clear that this is not simply a small diagonal increase: the usable area is dramatically larger.

The irony is that the software surrounding this screen has not become equally ambitious. Samsung still limits the default closed-phone experience to selected widgets, notifications, controls and supported functions. Full app access exists, but it sits behind Labs and Good Lock’s MultiStar tool—and Samsung warns that some apps may not be optimized for the external display.

The new hinge and less noticeable crease add refinement rather than transforming the product. The Flip7 weighs 188g, and its thinner folded profile is a daily improvement even when the phone is open.
Why the larger FlexWindow is genuinely better
In side-by-side use, the difference between the Flip6 and Flip7 cover screens is immediately apparent. The Flip7’s display is less cramped for tapping, scrolling and reading, while short replies are more practical on its larger keyboard. That matters because the main promise of a flip phone is being able to handle small tasks without opening it.
The bigger screen is particularly useful for:
- Notifications: More of a message or alert can be read before the phone needs to be opened.
- Messaging: Short replies are easier to type, although the experience remains more restricted than on the inner display.
- Photography: The rear cameras can be used for selfies while the FlexWindow provides a larger preview. FlexCam and hands-free shooting benefit directly from the extra space.
- AI features: Gemini Live and supported Samsung AI features are more useful when the external display can show more information.
- Controls: Music, timers, alarms and other quick actions are easier to see and operate.
- Outdoor use: Samsung’s stated brightness figure gives the screen more visibility in bright conditions.
In other words, the hardware is not the problem. The FlexWindow is not “too small” in the way older outer displays were. The stronger criticism is that Samsung has not matched its physical capability with equally flexible software.

The cover screen also supports wallpapers, clock styles, widgets, camera previews and selected Samsung or third-party widgets. Depending on the device software, region and installed apps, it can provide access to functions such as Gemini Live, the Now Bar and Now Brief.
This is a coherent experience for quick, controlled tasks. A notification minimalist may never find it frustrating. The problem appears when “use the phone while closed” means completing ordinary Android tasks rather than checking a notification or changing a setting.

The software restrictions are the real weakness
Arbitrary Android apps are not simply available from the standard cover-screen interface. Samsung’s default model remains curated, and independent reviews from Android Authority and Android Central identify several continuing limitations.
- Apps are not presented through a normal, unrestricted launcher by default.
- Some notification content may require unfolding the phone.
- Widget and clock customization is less flexible than the display hardware suggests.
- Quick-settings customization is restricted.
- Recent-app access and multitasking do not match the inner-screen experience.
- Keyboard choices can be limited in some cover-screen contexts.
- The display cannot freely rotate into another orientation.
- Apps designed for conventional rectangular screens may be clipped, awkward or unpredictable.
There is an important distinction between “an app can be launched” and “the app has proper cover-screen support.” A launcher workaround may make an app visible, but it does not redesign that app for the FlexWindow. Controls may be hidden by the camera cutouts, text may be cramped and an app may still ask you to unfold.
How to enable more apps with MultiStar
Samsung provides a workaround through Labs and MultiStar. The labels can vary with One UI version, region or carrier firmware, but the documented path is:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap Labs.
- Choose Apps allowed on cover screen (Labs).
- Turn on the feature and enable the apps you want to use.
- Tap Get MultiStar if prompted.
- Open MultiStar and enable Launcher Widget.
- Add the MultiStar launcher to the FlexWindow and launch selected apps from it.
TechRadar also describes MultiStar’s launcher behavior, but this should be understood as an expansion of Samsung’s intended interface, not a second phone hidden on the outside.

The workaround is useful for people who are willing to configure their device. It is less satisfying for buyers who expect a large outer display to work like a normal Android home screen immediately. Updates can change Labs, Good Lock or MultiStar behavior, and third-party utilities can introduce privacy, stability, battery or compatibility concerns.
Is the Flip7’s cover screen worse than the Flip6?
Not in a simple, universal sense. The Flip7’s hardware is clearly better, and common tasks such as viewing notifications, typing short messages and framing selfies benefit from the extra space.
However, Android Central reported that some users can do less in particular cover-screen workflows than they could on the Flip6, while Android Authority found that several long-standing restrictions remain. These are reviewer findings and task-specific observations, not proof that every user experiences a technical regression.
The more accurate conclusion is this: the Flip7 gives users a much better surface for interaction, but Samsung has not made the surrounding software equally open or flexible. The screen feels like a major generational upgrade; the rules governing it do not.

Performance, battery and cameras are less decisive
In the U.S., the Flip7 uses Samsung’s Exynos 2500 rather than the Snapdragon chip some buyers expected. Reviews generally place its performance in the competitive range for clamshell foldables, but their conclusions differ on heat and efficiency. Android Central found performance broadly comparable with the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025 while reporting more heat and no meaningful battery-life advantage over the Flip6 in its testing.
The battery has grown to 4,300mAh, but capacity alone does not make the Flip7 a battery-life breakthrough. Buyers who prioritize endurance above all else should not assume that the new model will deliver a dramatic generational improvement.
The camera hardware is also largely familiar: a 50MP main camera, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP selfie camera. The Flip7’s camera appeal comes more from the flip design, rear-camera selfies, FlexCam and hands-free shooting than from a wholesale photography upgrade.
Samsung’s long support commitment remains a meaningful advantage. Android Central reports support for up to seven years; buyers should confirm the exact operating-system and security-update terms for their market and model.

The meaningful comparison with Motorola’s Razr Ultra 2025, Razr+ 2025 and Razr 2025 is not only screen size or processor. It is software philosophy.

Reviews generally describe Motorola’s external-screen experience as more open: ordinary apps can be used from the outside with fewer Samsung-style restrictions. That makes the Razr family more attractive to app-heavy commuters, navigation users and anyone who wants to browse, email or use social apps without unfolding the phone.
Samsung’s advantages are different:
- One UI and broader Galaxy ecosystem integration.
- Integration with products such as Galaxy Watch and SmartThings.
- Samsung Wallet and familiar Samsung services.
- A long support promise and strong mainstream carrier presence.
- Samsung’s camera, AI and software ecosystem.
- A more controlled and predictable approach to the cover screen.
Motorola is not automatically better. Its advantage matters only if external-screen freedom is a top priority. Conversely, Samsung’s controlled approach may be preferable if you mainly want notifications, quick replies, media controls, timers, camera functions and AI interactions while keeping the phone closed.
Should Flip6 owners upgrade?
For a Flip5 or older model, the Flip7 is a much easier recommendation. The larger FlexWindow, thinner body, improved inner-screen proportions, newer hinge and crease refinement add up to a meaningful upgrade.

- Upgrade if the 3.4-inch screen feels cramped, you frequently take rear-camera selfies, or you want the thinner body and larger inner display.
- Keep the Flip6 if you are satisfied with its current notification and widget routine and expected a major camera, battery or performance leap.
- Compare Motorola first if your main reason for upgrading is unrestricted closed-phone app use.
- Skip the Flip7 if sustained gaming performance, maximum battery endurance or major camera improvements matter more than the flip form factor.
Who should buy the Galaxy Z Flip7?
Buy it when:
- You want Samsung’s ecosystem and software familiarity.
- You value a substantially better outer display but mostly use it for quick tasks.
- You want a thinner, less cramped flip phone.
- Rear-camera selfies, FlexCam and hands-free shooting are important.
- You use Samsung Wallet, Galaxy Watch, SmartThings or Samsung AI features.
- You are comfortable enabling Labs and MultiStar when needed.
Choose carefully or look elsewhere when:
- You want to browse, navigate, email or use Slack entirely from the closed phone.
- You expect the cover screen to behave like a fully independent Android phone.
- You are moving from a Motorola Razr with a more permissive outer-screen workflow.
- You demand a major camera upgrade.
- You are unwilling to troubleshoot Good Lock, Labs or MultiStar.
Verdict
The Galaxy Z Flip7 is a big upgrade where Samsung has made the most visible changes: the cover-screen hardware, folded thickness, inner-screen proportions, hinge and overall refinement. It is the most polished Samsung flip phone yet.
But the cover screen is hindered by software, not by its physical design. Samsung has built an outer display capable of much more than its default interface permits, then placed broader app access behind Labs and MultiStar. That makes the Flip7 excellent for quick closed-screen interactions, but frustrating for buyers who want a genuine mini smartphone on the outside.
Buy the Flip7 for its better hardware, Samsung ecosystem and polished flip-phone experience. Choose a Motorola Razr if unrestricted cover-screen apps matter more. Keep a Flip6 if its current workflow already satisfies you.
