Cher Wang built her fortune chiefly through ownership and leadership in two Taiwanese technology companies: semiconductor and chipset maker VIA Technologies, established in 1987, and HTC, the mobile-device company she co-founded in 1997. HTC’s rise as an early smartphone pioneer drove the most visible surge in her wealth. Forbes described Wang and her husband, Wen-Chi Chen, as billionaires during HTC’s 2011 boom—but those are historical estimates, not proof of her net worth today.
Family advantage—and companies she helped build
Wang is the daughter of Wang Yung-ching, the industrialist who founded Formosa Plastics Group. That background placed her close to Taiwan’s business world and gave her access to an influential network. It matters, but it does not by itself explain the fortune associated with her name.
The documented business story is that Wang helped establish and lead major technology companies. Calling her simply “self-made” would flatten the role of her family advantage; saying she merely inherited her fortune would overlook her work building VIA and HTC. Her wealth was tied substantially to company ownership and the rise in value of those businesses, rather than to salary alone.
Wang studied at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1982, according to Berkeley’s biography. She later became a prominent Taiwanese technology entrepreneur and HTC chairwoman.

VIA Technologies was the first foundation
VIA Technologies was established in 1987 by Wang and others. It became a Taiwan-based semiconductor and chipset company. Wang served as chairwoman, while her husband, Wen-Chi Chen, held senior operating roles, including president and CEO, according to HTC’s board biography.
VIA gave the couple an early foothold in the technology supply chain. Semiconductor companies can build value through chip-design expertise, intellectual property, licensing, partnerships and sales into markets such as personal computers and mobile devices. That does not mean Wang personally designed VIA’s chips: her documented contribution was as an entrepreneur and leader, not as an individual chip engineer.
Forbes reported that Wang and Chen helped build VIA from the remains of Symphony, a California maker of core-logic chips. Their interests in VIA formed one part of the business base behind later estimates of the couple’s wealth.

HTC first learned to build devices for other brands
HTC was co-founded in 1997. It did not begin as the household smartphone brand many consumers later came to know. Early attempts included handheld computers and laptops; the laptop effort failed, and the company focused on designing and manufacturing mobile devices for other businesses.

A 2000 project to design and produce the Compaq Aero personal digital assistant (PDA) helped establish HTC as a capable supplier. It went on to work with companies and carriers including Palm, T-Mobile, Orange and O2. Those contracts brought more than manufacturing revenue: they built engineering experience, carrier relationships, production capability and credibility with global partners.
This supplier phase is central to understanding HTC’s rise. The company acquired the expertise to design and integrate sophisticated mobile hardware before it tried to capture the value of a consumer-facing brand. Wang pushed HTC toward that next step as its experience grew.
From contract manufacturer to smartphone pioneer
HTC moved from making devices behind other companies’ names to co-branded products and then HTC-branded handsets. It became a leading maker of early Windows Mobile phones and later a significant Android hardware partner. The shift gave HTC more control over product identity and strategy than contract work alone, although it also meant taking on the costs and risks of competing for consumers.

A defining milestone came in 2008, when HTC built the T-Mobile G1, also known as the HTC Dream—the first commercially released phone running Google’s Android operating system. The partnership put HTC at the beginning of a rapidly expanding smartphone ecosystem. HTC’s engineering, partner relationships and early position helped it benefit as mobile internet and smartphone demand accelerated.

HTC’s ascent made the company—and the value of its owners’ stakes—far more visible. The wealth mechanism was equity appreciation: when investors valued HTC more highly during its growth, a substantial ownership stake could be worth much more. VIA remained part of the broader business picture, but HTC’s smartphone success was the more prominent driver of Wang’s public profile.
Why Forbes called Wang a billionaire
Forbes’ coverage during HTC’s high-growth period provides the clearest dated evidence for Wang’s billionaire status. A 2011 profile described Wang and Chen as Taiwan’s wealthiest couple and put their combined fortune at about $6.8 billion. Related Forbes wealth coverage reported an $8.8 billion figure. Such estimates can differ by date, methodology and whether wealth is reported individually or jointly; neither should be treated as cash or as a precise measure of Wang’s personal assets.
These were snapshots of estimated holdings at a time when HTC was thriving, not a permanent financial label. The distinction matters: a billionaire ranking generally values shares and other assets at estimated market prices, and the value of a large public-company stake can move sharply with the stock.

HTC’s smartphone position weakened as competition from Apple, Samsung and other manufacturers intensified. Reuters reported that HTC’s market share fell from close to 10% in 2011 to below 1% by 2017. Wang returned as CEO in 2015 to lead a turnaround effort, but the company did not regain its earlier smartphone prominence.
In September 2017, Google and HTC announced a $1.1 billion cooperation agreement. Under it, Google brought on certain HTC employees and received a nonexclusive license to HTC intellectual property. HTC’s announcement described the arrangement as a transaction between the companies—not a $1.1 billion personal payment to Wang, and not a purchase of all of HTC. HTC continued operating and increasingly emphasized virtual reality, including Vive, alongside mobile technologies.
The deal showed that HTC’s engineering talent and intellectual property retained value, but it does not establish what Wang personally received or what her assets are now. A company transaction and an owner’s personal net worth are different things.
Is Cher Wang still a billionaire?
The evidence here supports a historical answer, not a reliable current net-worth figure. Forbes’ prominent estimates date from the period around HTC’s peak, and the available profile is not a real-time accounting of Wang’s assets. HTC’s subsequent decline could have affected the value of her holdings, but the public facts cited here do not establish her current portfolio or personal net worth.
HTC’s recent corporate materials identify Wang as chairwoman and CEO, and describe the company’s focus as mobile and immersive technologies, including virtual reality and VIVERSE. Because executive titles can change, readers seeking her present role should check HTC’s current company page.
The clearest answer to how Wang became rich is therefore not a single inheritance, product or Google deal. She built and led businesses in semiconductors and mobile devices, held stakes as those companies grew, and saw HTC’s smartphone-era success dramatically raise the public estimates of her wealth. Whether she remains a billionaire is a separate, time-sensitive question that the historical figures do not settle.
