An email stuck in Gmail’s Outbox usually means Gmail saved it locally but has not finished synchronizing it with Google’s servers. The most common causes are a weak connection, disabled sync, a failed attachment upload, full storage, or an app, browser, or mail-client problem.
First refresh Gmail, verify your internet connection, open the queued message, and temporarily remove any attachment. Before deleting or resending it, check Sent and search Gmail for part of the subject or message text—an apparently stuck message may already have been delivered.
What “Outbox,” “Queued,” and “Sending” mean
These labels describe different stages of sending:
- Draft: You have not submitted the message for sending.
- Outbox or Queued: Gmail is waiting to upload or transmit the message.
- Sending or Uploading: Gmail has started processing it but has not finished.
- Sent: Gmail accepted the message and saved a copy in Sent.
- Bounce or rejection: Gmail attempted delivery but received an error.
Gmail does not display an Outbox in exactly the same way everywhere. It may be visible in Gmail Offline, a mobile synchronization workflow, or a third-party client such as Apple Mail or Outlook.

- Open the Outbox message. Confirm the recipient, subject, and body are still present.
- Check the connection. Load another website, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or try another network.
- Refresh Gmail. Swipe down in the mobile inbox or refresh Gmail in your browser.
- Remove the attachment temporarily. Send the text-only message as a test.
- Wait briefly for synchronization. Google says some mobile synchronization can take up to 15 minutes, and sometimes longer if the device has not been used recently.
- Check Sent before pressing Send again. Repeated attempts can create duplicates when the connection recovers.
- Try Gmail on another device. Open mail.google.com in a browser.
- Update and restart the Gmail app, browser, and device.
- Check both account and local device storage. They are separate problems with different fixes.
- Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard if Gmail fails on multiple devices and networks.
Check whether the problem affects one device or the account

Google recommends checking Gmail on a computer to determine whether the issue is limited to the mobile app. See Google’s sending and synchronization troubleshooting.
Android Gmail app fixes
Confirm Gmail synchronization
- Open Gmail and tap Menu.
- Tap Settings.
- Select the affected account.
- Under Data usage, make sure Sync Gmail is enabled.
Also open Android Settings and find the account’s synchronization controls. Select the Google account and tap Sync now, if that option is available. Menu names vary by Android manufacturer and version.
Free local storage, then update and restart
A nearly full phone can prevent Gmail from synchronizing. Remove unused apps, downloads, or other local files, update Gmail through the app store, restart the phone, and refresh the inbox.
Clear Gmail storage only as a last resort
Google’s reset procedure is Settings > Apps or See all apps > Gmail > Storage & cache > Clear storage. This can erase local drafts, signatures, ringtone settings, and other app data. Copy important drafts and verify Sent before using it. It is not a harmless first-line cache fix.

iPhone and iPad fixes
- Open Gmail and swipe down in the inbox to refresh.
- Open iOS Settings > General > Background App Refresh and enable Gmail.
- In Gmail, tap Menu > Settings. Under General, open Data usage > Sync settings and review the number of days being synchronized.
- Update Gmail, restart the device, and try sending again without the attachment.
Background App Refresh allows Gmail to update when it is not open, but iOS battery, network, and system conditions can still delay activity. Also check your Google Account storage.
Desktop browser and Gmail Offline
When Gmail Offline is enabled, messages sent without an internet connection can remain in a local Outbox. Gmail should send them after the connection returns, but Chrome must remain open and offline storage must be available. Gmail Offline works in a normal Chrome window, not Incognito mode.
Browser settings that delete Google site data on exit, limited browser storage, closing Chrome, or a failed connection can prevent synchronization. For browser-related problems:
- Update the browser.
- Try Gmail in another supported browser.
- Temporarily disable extensions and add-ons.
- Use a private window as a diagnostic test for extensions and cookies.
- Clear browser cache and cookies if Gmail remains broken.
Incognito can help identify an extension or cookie problem, but it is not a solution for Gmail Offline because Offline requires a normal Chrome window. See Google’s Gmail Offline requirements and browser troubleshooting.

Attachments stuck on “Uploading”
For personal Gmail accounts, the total attachment limit is 25 MB. Work and school accounts may have different administrator-defined limits. Gmail may replace an oversized attachment with a Google Drive link, but an upload can still fail because of a slow connection, insufficient Google storage, or a failed Drive upload.
- Open the queued message and remove the attachment.
- Send the message without it.
- If that works, confirm the file opens locally and attach it again.
- For large files, upload the file to Google Drive and send a sharing link.
- If Gmail says the file is still uploading, wait or remove and re-add it.
Gmail also blocks certain executable file types for security reasons. If attachments fail only on a managed network, the network administrator or ISP may be restricting Google’s attachment-hosting services. See Google’s attachment guidance.
Check storage, service status, and sending limits
Google Account storage
Gmail shares storage with Google Drive and Google Photos. When the account reaches its limit, Gmail cannot send or receive normally. Messages sent to the full account may be returned to the sender. Gmail messages and attachments in Spam and Trash continue to count until those folders are emptied.

Check your Google Account storage, delete unnecessary large messages or Drive files, empty Gmail Trash and Spam, and retry. This is different from local phone storage and browser offline storage.

Gmail service disruption
If Gmail fails across multiple devices and networks, check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard before repeatedly reinstalling apps or changing settings. Do not assume Gmail is down without checking the current status.
Sending limits and bounce messages
Personal Gmail accounts may be temporarily restricted after sending more than 500 emails in one day or addressing one email to more than 500 recipients. Google says sending may resume within 24 hours; Workspace limits differ. This normally produces an error rather than a silent Outbox, so follow the specific message if one appears.
A bounce can instead indicate a misspelled recipient, a full recipient mailbox, a temporary recipient-server problem, or a Gmail sending restriction. Follow the instructions in the bounce rather than troubleshooting the Outbox indefinitely. See Google’s sending-limit and bounce guidance.

Apple Mail, Outlook, and other mail apps
If Gmail works at mail.google.com but a message remains in Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird, or another app, the problem is probably in that client rather than Gmail’s web interface.

Reauthenticate the account if prompted and verify the outgoing-server configuration using the client’s current Google-supported setup. For Apple Mail, Google identifies smtp.gmail.com as the outgoing server and notes that an incorrect outgoing configuration can prevent sending. Avoid relying on old universal POP or SMTP instructions because authentication and client interfaces change. See Google’s mail-client troubleshooting.
Safely delete and resend a stuck message
Do not repeatedly tap Send. Before deleting an Outbox item:
- Check Sent.
- Search Gmail for a distinctive phrase from the subject or body.
- Ask the recipient whether it arrived.
- Copy the recipient, subject, and body into a draft or text document.
Only then delete the queued copy and recreate the message. If delivery is uncertain, resend with a short note explaining that the first copy may have been delayed. Deleting an unsynchronized Outbox item can remove its only local copy.

Save important drafts, confirm the message was not delivered, and record account settings before removing and re-adding the account or resetting Gmail data. For work or school accounts, contact the Google Workspace administrator when attachment, storage, authentication, or sending limits may be organization-controlled.
