The iPhone’s Messages app can send iMessages, RCS messages, SMS, MMS and, on supported iPhones and in supported locations, messages via satellite. Start a conversation from the app’s Compose button; the bubble color and available features depend on the connection, carrier and recipient’s device. This guide covers setup, everyday messaging, iOS 26 features, privacy controls and common fixes.
Set up Messages on your iPhone
- Open Settings > Apps > Messages and turn on iMessage.
- Tap Send & Receive and select the phone numbers and email addresses where you want to receive iMessages.
- Under Start New Conversations From, choose the number or email address you want people to see when you start a new thread.
If new conversations start from your email instead of your phone number, change that selection. An existing conversation may keep using the address it started with; start a new conversation if you want to use a different identity. See Apple’s phone-number setup guidance.
To use RCS with compatible non-Apple devices, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging and turn it on if the option appears. RCS is carrier-provided: support depends on your carrier, plan and region, and charges may apply. The setting may be absent where it is not available. iOS 26 also lets users choose which app handles SMS, MMS and RCS text messages; the exact choice depends on the apps and options available on the iPhone. To keep message history updated on your Apple devices, sign in with the same Apple Account and enable Messages in iCloud where appropriate. For SMS, MMS and RCS forwarding to selected Apple devices, use Settings > Apps > Messages > Text Message Forwarding. These are different options and may depend on device, account, carrier and region.

Send your first message
- Open Messages and tap the Compose button.
- Enter a contact name, phone number or email address.
- Tap the message field, type your message, then tap Send.
To reply, open a conversation and type in its message field. Check the recipient carefully before sending sensitive information. Depending on the recipient, internet connection and carrier, a message may use iMessage, RCS, SMS or MMS. If iMessage is unavailable, your iPhone may offer to send as a text message if the relevant setting and carrier support are available.
What blue and green bubbles mean
- Blue: iMessage, Apple’s internet-based messaging service. It generally requires an Apple device at the other end, iMessage enabled and an internet connection over Wi-Fi or cellular data. iMessage supports features such as Tapbacks, message effects, polls and conversation backgrounds. Apple says iMessage content is end-to-end encrypted in transit.
- Green: a message sent by RCS, SMS or MMS. Green does not mean SMS specifically. RCS can provide higher-resolution media, typing indicators, read receipts and delivery receipts when both the carrier and conversation support it.
Which features work depends on the messaging protocol, carrier, region, account and devices involved. A green bubble alone does not tell you whether a message used RCS, SMS or MMS. See Apple’s comparison of iMessage, RCS, SMS and MMS.
Send photos, videos, links and audio
In a conversation, tap the + button to open available tools. Options can include Photos, Camera, Audio, Location, documents, stickers and Polls; what appears varies by device and installed apps. You can also paste a link into the message field.

Record and save an audio message
- Open a conversation, tap +, then tap Audio.
- Speak, then tap Stop when finished.
- Listen if you wish, then tap Send.
Audio messages may include a transcript, but transcription is available only in selected languages. Audio messages may be automatically deleted to save space; to keep one, touch and hold it and tap Save to Voice Memos. See Apple’s audio-message instructions.
React with Tapbacks, emoji and stickers
Double-tap or touch and hold a message to bring up Tapback options. Choose a suggested reaction, or swipe left to see more emoji and stickers. A Tapback attaches to that specific message and is visible to everyone in the conversation. You can edit or remove your own reaction, but only one Tapback can be attached to a message at a time; stickers can be sent separately.
Use the + button to browse stickers, Memoji and emoji. Genmoji is an optional Apple Intelligence feature, not a standard capability on every iPhone; compatible hardware, software, language and region are required. More details are in Apple’s Tapback instructions.
Edit or unsend a message
These controls are for iMessage in normal use, not a general way to revise or retract green-bubble texts:

- Unsend: touch and hold the sent message, then tap Undo Send. You have up to two minutes after sending.
- Edit: touch and hold the message, tap Edit, make the change and tap the send-edit button. You can edit up to five times within 15 minutes.
Both participants can tap Edited to view earlier versions. Apple documents an exception for an SMS, MMS or RCS text in a group conversation that includes at least one other iMessage user. Do not treat editing or unsending as a privacy guarantee: the recipient may already have seen, copied, photographed or received the original in a notification. What’s new in Messages in iOS 26
Create a poll
- Open an iMessage conversation and tap +.
- Tap Polls, add answer options and tap Send.
A poll can have up to 12 options. Starting, viewing and voting in polls requires compatible Apple software: iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe, watchOS 26 or visionOS 26 or later. Someone who cannot view a poll may receive a message saying one was sent. Apple Intelligence can suggest options on supported devices. See Apple’s poll instructions.
Add a conversation background
- Open an iMessage conversation and tap the contact or group icon at the top.
- Tap Backgrounds, then choose an option such as Color, Sky, Water, Aurora or Photo.
- Adjust the image if needed and tap Done.
Backgrounds require iMessage and compatible Apple software, and other participants can see the conversation’s background. Participants in a group may change it; removing a background affects the group. To turn off the feature on your iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Messages and turn off Conversation Backgrounds. Supported devices can use Apple Intelligence and Image Playground to create original backgrounds. See Apple’s background instructions.

Depending on your device, language, region and software version, Messages may offer conversation summaries, Smart Reply, Genmoji, original images or generated backgrounds. These are optional features, not a promise that every iOS 26 iPhone can use them. To check setup, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn on Apple Intelligence if it is available. Availability and feature rollouts can change; check Apple’s iOS 26 feature guidance.

Filter unknown senders and report spam
In iOS 26, Screen Unknown Senders is off by default unless the setting carried over from the earlier Filter Unknown Senders option in iOS 18. To check it, open Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering > Unknown Senders and turn screening on or off. You can also look under Settings > Apps > Messages > Unknown Senders. Unknown messages appear in a separate filter. Mark a sender as known if you want future messages in the main list. Notification options vary by region, and filtering may behave differently after you have replied to a sender three or more times.
Screening can help reduce clutter, but it may also separate legitimate delivery updates, appointment notices or verification codes from the main list. If you are expecting a message, check the filters before assuming it was not delivered. Apple explains the iOS 26 behavior in its unknown-sender guidance.
To organize eligible SMS, MMS and RCS messages, go to Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering > Text Message Filter. Turn on Text Message Filter and any installed third-party filtering extensions. Depending on availability, this can sort messages into categories such as Transactions and Promotions. See Apple’s filtering instructions.
Report or block a sender
For an unopened message, swipe left, tap the delete button, then tap Delete and Report Spam. For an opened message from an unknown sender, use the Report Spam link at the bottom if it appears, then confirm. You cannot report a message after replying to it. Reporting does not stop the sender from messaging you; block the sender separately if needed. A mistakenly classified report may be recoverable from the Spam folder. Pin, mute, search, delete and recover conversations
- Pin or unpin: touch and hold a conversation in the list and choose the pin or unpin option.
- Mute: swipe left on a conversation and tap the bell or mute control, if shown. Repeat the action to turn alerts back on.
- Search: use the search field in Messages to look for people, words or shared content.
- Delete a message: touch and hold the message and choose More or the available delete control. Select the item and tap the trash button.
- Delete a conversation: swipe left on it in the list and tap delete, then confirm.
- Recover a recent deletion: open Filters, choose Recently Deleted if available, select the conversation and choose recovery. Menus and retention behavior can vary by software version, so check the folder rather than relying on a fixed retention period.
For shared photos, links and documents, open the conversation’s details page by tapping the name at the top.
Share your location and use Check In
Tap + in a conversation to find location options. Location sharing gives a person access to location information according to the option you select. Check In is different: it is designed to notify a contact when you reach a destination or, if something unexpected happens, share relevant progress information. It is not an emergency-response service. For an emergency, contact local emergency services and use the iPhone’s emergency features.
Use Siri or Messages with CarPlay
You can ask Siri, for example, “Send a message to [name] saying [message],” “Read my last message from [name],” or “Reply, that’s great news.” To allow messages to send without a confirmation step, go to Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Messaging with Siri, then turn on Automatically Send Messages if available. Use automatic sending cautiously, especially when driving.

With CarPlay, you can hear unread messages, select a conversation and reply, start a new conversation, use Siri, send Tapbacks and access pinned conversations. Do not read or type messages manually while driving. See Apple’s CarPlay Messages guidance.
Send messages via satellite
On a supported iPhone 14 or later, Messages may offer satellite messaging when you are outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage in a supported country. Open Messages, follow the prompt to use Messages via Satellite and follow the on-screen directions to connect. An active SIM and a clear view of the sky and horizon are required; a message can take several minutes to send. SMS via satellite also depends on carrier support. Apple lists the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan among supported locations, with some regional iOS requirements.
Messages via satellite is not available everywhere and is not a substitute for Emergency SOS via satellite. Apple’s availability and service policies can change; consult its satellite messaging requirements before relying on the feature.
Fix common Messages problems

| iMessage will not activate or messages are not sending | Check Wi-Fi or cellular data, then confirm your number or email under Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive. Restart the iPhone, make sure date and time are set automatically, and check Apple’s system status.
