As of August 18, 2026, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Transfer Program is over. Tesla’s current support page says customers who took delivery of a new Tesla by March 31, 2026 may have qualified, but no new transfers are available through the program.
The confusion came from Tesla changing the qualifying language during the promotion: the deadline was initially described as delivery by March 31, later reported as an order-by-March-31 deadline, and then changed back to a delivery requirement. That distinction mattered to customers whose vehicles were ordered before the cutoff but delivered afterward.
The short version
- The specific FSD transfer promotion ended on March 31, 2026.
- Tesla’s currently visible U.S. support page uses a delivery-by-March-31 formulation.
- Earlier reporting said Tesla temporarily changed the wording to allow vehicles ordered by March 31, even if delivery came later.
- Purchased FSD was transferred from one vehicle to another; it was not duplicated.
- The old vehicle lost the transferred capability, and the transfer could not be reversed.
- A monthly FSD subscription is different from purchased FSD and is not a transferable ownership asset.
This was a limited promotion, not a permanent right available to every Tesla owner with purchased FSD. Eligibility depended on the applicable terms, account, vehicle, dates and region.

There are two materially different ways to define a vehicle deadline:

- Ordered by March 31: the customer places the order before the cutoff. A later delivery may still qualify.
- Delivered by March 31: the customer must take delivery before the cutoff. Ordering before the cutoff is not enough if Tesla delivers the vehicle afterward.
Tesla’s reported move between those formulations created particular uncertainty for custom orders with delivery windows extending beyond March 31. An order-based rule would have protected customers who committed before the deadline. A delivery-based rule exposed them to the possibility that a delayed production or delivery appointment would eliminate eligibility.
The current Tesla support page confirms the final status: the program is no longer available and customers who took delivery of a new Tesla by March 31, 2026 may have qualified. The page does not provide a public revision history, so the intermediate wording changes come from contemporaneous automotive reporting rather than a preserved Tesla version log.

It is more precise to say Tesla’s published wording moved between order-based and delivery-based formulations than to claim an exact number of rule changes. That number can vary depending on which archived or regional versions are counted.
Who was affected?
The promotion generally targeted an existing Tesla owner with purchased FSD who was moving into a newly purchased Tesla. Some regional terms also referred to Enhanced Autopilot (EAP), so EAP treatment should not be assumed to have been identical in every market.
The historical Australian terms provide a useful example of how the mechanics worked, although regional rules could differ. They described a one-time transfer to a new vehicle on the same Tesla account. The transfer took place after delivery, and the old vehicle lost the transferred software capability. The terms also addressed leased vehicles and trade-ins.

Customers most exposed to the deadline change included:
- Owners with purchased FSD ordering a replacement Tesla.
- Customers placing custom orders with delivery estimates after March 31.
- Cybertruck buyers whose expected delivery timing extended beyond the cutoff.
- Model S and Model X buyers replacing an older Tesla.
- Customers using a trade-in or moving from a lease into a new vehicle.
- Owners who had purchased FSD but were mistakenly treating a subscription as equivalent.
Some coverage connected the order-based revision and its reversal to lower-priced Cybertruck variants and their reported delivery timing. That is an inference from the timing and surrounding reports, not a reason Tesla publicly confirmed. It should not be presented as proof that Tesla changed the policy to target Cybertruck customers or to force subscriptions.

“May have qualified” is important. The March 31 date did not automatically give every paid-FSD owner a transfer. Tesla’s terms included additional conditions, and regional versions were not necessarily identical.
What the transfer actually did to the cars
A transfer moved the purchased capability from the old Tesla to the new one. It did not create a second FSD entitlement.
After the transfer:
- The old Tesla lost the transferred FSD capability and retained the applicable basic Autopilot functions.
- The new Tesla received the transferred capability after delivery and completion of the process.
- The old vehicle could be valued as though it had basic Autopilot rather than the removed FSD package.
- The transfer was not reversible.
Tesla’s trade-in guidance is therefore relevant: owners should not calculate the old car’s trade-in value as though it still retained the FSD package after transfer.

Once transferred, FSD stayed with the new vehicle. Tesla says it remained available to a subsequent owner if that vehicle was later sold. It could not then be moved to another Tesla account through the original transfer.

Purchased FSD, subscriptions and used Teslas are different
Purchased FSD
Purchased FSD is a vehicle-linked software capability acquired outright, subject to Tesla’s applicable terms. The discontinued promotion provided a limited mechanism for moving it to a qualifying new Tesla. That mechanism has ended.
Monthly FSD subscription
Tesla’s current subscription support page lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 per month, subject to availability, terms and change. A subscription provides recurring access; it is not the same as owning a transferable software package. If a previous owner subscribed, Tesla says the new owner must subscribe through their own Tesla account.

Used vehicles with purchased FSD
A used Tesla may retain purchased FSD if the previous owner did not transfer it away. But a listing or seller statement is not enough. Verify the vehicle’s actual software status through Tesla’s account and vehicle configuration information. A car may instead have a subscription, a package-based entitlement, no FSD, or hardware and regional limitations affecting availability.

Tesla’s FSD support page also emphasizes that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) does not make the car fully autonomous. The driver must remain attentive and actively supervise the system.
What customers should check in their records
Anyone who believed they qualified should assemble the records tied to the specific order and account:
- Confirm whether the old vehicle had purchased FSD, EAP, a subscription or another package.
- Check the Tesla account associated with both vehicles.
- Record the order date, delivery date, VIN and delivery documentation.
- Save dated emails, Tesla app notifications, screenshots and written messages that show the applicable wording.
- Review the order agreement and any promotional terms supplied when the order was placed.
- Check whether the delivery occurred by March 31, rather than relying on an estimated delivery window.
- If a trade-in was involved, verify that its valuation did not assume the transferred FSD remained on the old vehicle.
Do not rely on an unchanged search result, cached page or verbal assurance from a sales adviser without supporting written records. A customer-service or sales statement may also differ from the formal terms attached to the order.

Tesla’s standard motor-vehicle order agreement says estimated delivery dates are estimates and are not guaranteed. That language is separate from the FSD-transfer promotion; it does not automatically resolve whether a customer relied on a particular promotional promise.
Whether Tesla was legally required to honor an earlier version cannot be answered generally. The relevant facts may include the customer’s jurisdiction, the exact promotional terms, the order agreement, money paid, written communications, and whether the customer relied on the earlier wording. Consumer-protection and contract rules differ by state and country. Anyone considering a formal complaint or claim should have the individual documents reviewed under the law that applies to the transaction.

Why the policy matters beyond this promotion
The episode highlights a broader issue with vehicle software: a feature that feels like a product purchase may remain tied to a particular vehicle and account arrangement.
A transfer promotion can encourage an upgrade because an owner does not have to abandon a previously purchased capability. But when eligibility depends on a delivery date, customers face uncertainty that is partly outside their control. Changes between order-based and delivery-based wording also make dated records unusually important.
Tesla offers subscriptions as an alternative, which may support recurring software revenue. That is a reasonable business interpretation of the available products, not a confirmed explanation for the deadline reversal. Tesla has not publicly established that subscription monetization was the reason for changing the transfer terms.

What options remain now?
- Keep the current Tesla and subscribe: avoids replacing the vehicle but creates a recurring monthly cost.
- Buy a used Tesla that retains purchased FSD: may avoid a new-car purchase, but the software status must be verified directly.
- Buy a new Tesla without FSD: limits the initial commitment and may leave subscription access available later where supported.
- Wait for a future promotion: possible but speculative. Tesla’s ended program should not be treated as evidence that another transfer offer is coming.
Before buying, determine whether the vehicle’s FSD access is purchased, subscribed, package-based or absent. Do not assume that an existing paid FSD package can be moved to a new Tesla after March 31, 2026.
