The best VS Code extensions are not the ones with the longest install lists—they are the ones that solve a problem in your workflow. Start with three to six relevant extensions, verify the current publisher and Marketplace listing, and skip anything that duplicates VS Code’s built-in terminal, Git, debugger, search, IntelliSense, profiles, or remote-development features.
This curated list covers code quality, JavaScript, Python, GitHub, AI-assisted development, APIs, containers, and remote environments. You do not need all 24.

All of these extensions are free to install, but connected services, hosted AI products, commercial Docker use, and premium Git tooling may have separate plans or terms. Check the current Marketplace or vendor page before committing to a workflow.

1. Prettier — Code formatter
Best for: JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON, CSS, HTML, Markdown, YAML, and other supported formats.

Prettier removes formatting arguments by applying consistent rules automatically. It is especially useful when a team wants format-on-save and a project-level configuration.
Prettier formats code; it does not replace ESLint. In a JavaScript or TypeScript project, let the repository’s local Prettier package and configuration determine behavior rather than relying on an arbitrary global installation.

Best for: Teams using different editors or operating systems.
EditorConfig applies basic conventions such as indentation, line endings, and final newlines from an .editorconfig file. It complements a formatter and linter; it does not replace either.
3. Path Intellisense
Best for: Web developers and anyone who frequently imports files.
Path Intellisense provides filename and path autocomplete. It may not understand every framework’s virtual modules or aliases configured by TypeScript, a bundler, or framework tooling, and it does not replace language-server support.
4. Error Lens
Best for: Developers who want diagnostics displayed beside the affected line.
Error Lens makes warnings and errors harder to miss than they are in the Problems panel. The trade-off is visual clutter. Tune its severity and display settings—or disable it temporarily—when a project produces many warnings.
5. Todo Tree
Best for: Developers tracking TODO, FIXME, HACK, or custom markers.
Todo Tree collects annotated comments into a navigable view. It is useful for finding unfinished work, but it can also expose stale comments. Treat the list as work to review, not as a substitute for issue tracking.

6. GitLens
Best for: Developers who need richer Git history, blame, and authorship context.

GitLens adds inline blame, historical exploration, and repository-focused views. It is unnecessary if VS Code’s built-in Source Control view and the command line already provide what you need. Some features may depend on changing GitLens plan limits, so check the vendor’s current page.
JavaScript and frontend development
7. ESLint
Best for: JavaScript and TypeScript projects.
ESLint surfaces project-defined code-quality and style problems and can apply fixes. Installing the extension does not define your rules: behavior depends on the repository’s ESLint version, configuration, parser, plugins, ignored paths, and working directories.
Use the Command Palette command ESLint: Fix all auto-fixable problems when appropriate. Large repositories may need configuration tuning to avoid slow or noisy diagnostics.
8. Live Server
Best for: Beginners and developers previewing static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Live Server starts a local server and refreshes the browser as files change. It is not a replacement for a framework development server, bundler, backend, database, or production-like environment. Port conflicts, firewall rules, the wrong workspace root, and dynamic applications are common reasons it appears not to work.
9. Auto Rename Tag
Best for: HTML, XML, JSX, and paired-tag editing.
Auto Rename Tag updates a matching closing or opening tag when you rename the other one. Malformed markup and framework-specific syntax can limit its accuracy, and some language support may already be available through VS Code or another language extension.
10. Tailwind CSS IntelliSense
Best for: Projects using Tailwind CSS.
Tailwind CSS IntelliSense adds class completion, syntax support, and diagnostics. It works best when the project configuration is detected correctly. Dynamically constructed classes, missing file patterns, unusual configurations, or version-specific behavior can prevent suggestions from appearing.
11. JavaScript and TypeScript Nightly
Best for: Developers testing upcoming language-service behavior.
JavaScript and TypeScript Nightly lets you try newer tooling before it becomes the default. It is a testing tool, not a universal upgrade; pre-release behavior can introduce instability.
Python and data science
12. Python
Best for: Python editing, testing, debugging, and environment management.
The Python extension requires Python to be installed separately. Use Python: Select Interpreter to choose the correct virtual environment. A frequent failure is that VS Code, the integrated terminal, the language server, and the test runner use different environments. Install dependencies in the selected environment rather than globally.

Best for: Python autocomplete, navigation, type analysis, and diagnostics.

Pylance works with the Python extension and is most effective when the interpreter is configured correctly. Strict type checking can produce warnings in dynamic code, while large workspaces may require limiting the analysis scope.
14. Jupyter
Best for: Notebooks, experiments, visualization, and interactive Python.
Jupyter brings notebook workflows into VS Code. You may need compatible notebook packages in the selected Python environment. Notebook outputs can contain sensitive information, and reproducibility still requires documented dependencies and execution order.
GitHub and collaboration
15. GitHub Pull Requests and Issues
Best for: Teams using GitHub for issues and code review.
GitHub Pull Requests and Issues brings pull requests, comments, reviews, and issues into VS Code. It requires a GitHub account and repository permissions. It is not a general client for GitLab, Bitbucket, or every self-hosted Git service; SSO, proxies, and corporate network policies can affect it.
16. Live Share
Best for: Pair programming, teaching, reviews, and collaborative debugging.
Live Share lets collaborators work in a shared session without manually synchronizing every file. Review which workspace content and ports are shared, and follow organizational authentication policies. It complements rather than replaces normal Git reviews.
AI-assisted development
17. GitHub Copilot
Best for: AI completion, chat, explanations, refactoring, and agent-oriented workflows.
GitHub Copilot is an account-based service with free and paid options across its offering. Current models, usage limits, eligibility, and plan terms change; check the official plans page and VS Code documentation.
Generated code can be wrong, insecure, outdated, or incompatible. Organizations should review data-governance rules, and developers should test and inspect every meaningful suggestion. Do not assume it understands an entire codebase without specifying the feature and context involved.
18. Continue
Best for: Developers who want configurable providers, model choice, or local and self-hosted workflows.

Containers and remote development
19. Docker
Best for: Building, running, inspecting, and troubleshooting containers.
The Docker extension adds image, container, registry, and related workflows. Docker must be installed and running, and your account must be able to access the daemon. Check remote contexts, port publishing, permissions, and current Docker Desktop licensing terms for organizational use.
20. Dev Containers
Best for: Reproducible development environments.
Dev Containers lets VS Code create or attach to development containers defined by project configuration. It requires Docker or another supported runtime. Image builds can be slow, filesystem performance varies by operating system, and configuration can become complex. A development container is not automatically a production image.

21. Remote — SSH
Best for: Editing and debugging on a remote Linux machine, VM, server, or cloud host.
Remote — SSH requires network connectivity, SSH access, permissions, and room for VS Code Server components on the host. Key or agent problems, host-key errors, proxies, firewalls, remote disk space, and permissions are common failure points. Extensions installed locally may need separate installation in the remote window.
22. WSL
Best for: Windows developers using a Linux-based environment.
WSL connects VS Code to a configured Windows Subsystem for Linux distribution. Windows-side and WSL-side paths, tools, permissions, dependencies, and terminals are not interchangeable. Install project dependencies in the environment where the project runs.

APIs and configuration
23. REST Client
Best for: Developers who want version-controlled HTTP requests.
REST Client stores requests in text files beside a project, making them reviewable and reusable. For example:
GET https://api.example.com/users
Authorization: Bearer {{$dotenv API_TOKEN}}Never commit real tokens, passwords, bearer credentials, or production secrets to request files. A graphical alternative is Thunder Client, but check its current free-versus-paid limits at its official site.
24. YAML
Best for: Kubernetes, CI/CD, infrastructure, and configuration-heavy projects.

Extensions you may not need
VS Code already includes an integrated terminal, search and replace, Source Control, Git integration, debugging, IntelliSense, multiple cursors, tasks, profiles, and Settings Sync. Check the built-in feature before installing an extension from an old list.
Profiles let you keep separate extension sets for frontend, Python, documentation, or other workflows. Settings Sync can synchronize settings, shortcuts, profiles, snippets, tasks, and extensions between supported local environments, but it does not synchronize extensions to or from SSH, Dev Container, or WSL remote windows.
How to install and manage extensions safely
- Open the Extensions view with Ctrl+Shift+X on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+X on macOS.
- Search for the exact name and publisher.
- Inspect the repository, update history, supported VS Code versions, permissions, and current pricing or account requirements.
- Select Install, then reload if prompted.
You can also install an extension from a terminal:
code --install-extension esbenp.prettier-vscode
code --install-extension dbaeumer.vscode-eslint
code --install-extension eamodio.gitlens
code --install-extension ms-python.pythonCopy the current extension ID from the Marketplace listing rather than trusting an old article. From the extension’s gear menu, choose Disable, Disable (Workspace), or Uninstall. If a problem is difficult to isolate, use Help: Start Extension Bisect from the Command Palette.

Workspace Trust, privacy, and performance
Extensions are software, not passive themes. They may access files, provide language services, watch directories, run tools, or communicate with external services. When opening an unfamiliar repository, inspect its tasks, launch configurations, scripts, dev-container files, and extension recommendations before trusting it. Do not blindly install every recommendation. See Workspace Trust for how restricted mode affects behavior.
Too many extensions can increase activation work, file watching, diagnostics, CPU use, memory use, and startup time. Install gradually, use profiles, disable unused extensions, and remove overlapping tools. Multiple formatters for one language, multiple icon themes, several API clients, and multiple AI assistants are usually unnecessary.
AI assistants may send prompts or source context to external services, require accounts, impose usage limits, and conflict with company or regulatory rules. Remote-development extensions introduce separate permissions, networks, filesystems, and extension installations. Review those boundaries before using them with sensitive code.
Recommended bundles
Minimal setup
Prettier; ESLint for JavaScript or TypeScript; EditorConfig; Path Intellisense; GitLens only if its extra history is useful; Error Lens only if diagnostics remain readable.
Frontend setup
Prettier, ESLint, Live Server for static sites, Auto Rename Tag, Tailwind CSS IntelliSense for Tailwind projects, REST Client or Thunder Client, and GitHub Pull Requests and Issues for GitHub teams.
Python setup
Python, Pylance, Jupyter for notebooks, EditorConfig, optional GitLens, and Docker or Dev Containers when the project uses containers.
DevOps setup
Docker, Dev Containers, Remote — SSH, WSL for Windows/Linux workflows, YAML, REST Client, and GitHub Pull Requests and Issues.
Documentation setup
Markdown All in One, Code Spell Checker, Prettier, GitLens, and YAML when deployment or configuration files are part of the documentation workflow.
Useful alternatives
- Thunder Client: A GUI-oriented API client for users who prefer collections and visual request management.
- SQLTools: Database browsing and querying, subject to driver and database compatibility.
- Markdown All in One: Markdown shortcuts, tables of contents, and editing productivity.
- Code Spell Checker: Useful for prose, identifiers, and documentation; dictionaries need tuning.
- vscode-icons or Material Icon Theme: Optional file icons. Install one icon theme, not both.
- Remote Development extension pack: A convenient bundle for SSH, WSL, and Dev Containers, described in the Remote Development documentation.
Bottom line
Choose extensions by problem, not by install count. Start with a small profile, use the project’s existing configuration, review permissions and external-service requirements, and remove anything that creates noise or slows VS Code. The right six extensions will improve your workflow more than an unmanaged collection of 24.
