Yes, the MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi is a real standalone motherboard. It is a 243.84 × 243.84 mm micro-ATX AM5 board for Ryzen 7000-, 8000-, and 9000-series desktop processors, with DDR5, PCIe 5.0, Wi-Fi 7, and 5GbE networking. However, “white PCB” is a retail or editorial appearance description, not part of MSI’s formal model name. Confirm the seller’s photographs and exact SKU before buying.
Its specifications make it a strong candidate for a compact white gaming PC, but CPU-dependent PCIe limitations, two-M.2 storage capacity, ALC897 audio, and uncertain regional availability matter more than the headline feature list.
What is the MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi?
The official model name is MSI B850M GAMING PLUS WIFI. The “M” identifies the micro-ATX form factor, while B850 refers to AMD’s AM5 chipset family. MSI lists the board on its official product page and in its official specifications.

Do not confuse it with the full-size MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi, the separate B850M Gaming Plus WiFi6E, the B850M Gaming WiFi, or the higher-tier MAG B850M Mortar WiFi. Similar names do not mean identical layouts, wireless standards, audio hardware, or expansion options.

White PCB: what buyers should verify
“White PCB” should be treated as a visual descriptor unless the specific retailer SKU and product images confirm the board’s color. MSI’s formal specification page confirms the model and its technical design, but does not make “White PCB” part of the product name.
Before ordering, compare the seller’s photos with the exact MSI model, check the board revision if shown, and review the return policy. Some listings can use color keywords or images for a similar WiFi6E or ATX product. The color affects the appearance of a white-themed build; it does not change performance.

CPU compatibility and PCIe limitations
The board uses Socket AM5 and officially supports Ryzen 7000-, 8000-, and 9000-series desktop CPUs. Support can change as new processors and BIOS versions arrive, so check MSI’s current CPU support and BIOS pages for the exact processor.

- Ryzen 7000 and 9000 processors can provide PCIe 5.0 x16 to the primary graphics slot.
- Ryzen 8700, 8600, and 8400 processors reduce the primary slot to PCIe 4.0 x8.
- Ryzen 8500 and 8300 processors reduce it to PCIe 4.0 x4.
- The first M.2 slot reaches PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 7000/9000, but is PCIe 4.0 x4 with Ryzen 8000.
- The second M.2 slot can be limited to PCIe 4.0 x2 with Ryzen 8500/8300.
This means the B850 chipset’s PCIe 5.0 capability is not automatically available at its maximum on every AM5 processor. The detailed lane behavior is documented in the MSI manual.
HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 work only when the installed processor provides integrated graphics. A discrete GPU is still required for CPUs without usable integrated graphics.

DDR5 memory support
Four DDR5 UDIMM slots provide dual-channel operation and up to 256GB of non-ECC, unbuffered memory. AMD EXPO is supported, and MSI advertises memory overclocking up to DDR5-8200+ MT/s.

MSI’s Ryzen 9000 guidance varies with rank and the number of DIMMs per channel: up to 8200+ MT/s for 1DPC 1R, up to 6400+ for 1DPC 2R and 2DPC 1R, and up to 6000+ for 2DPC 2R configurations.
Four populated slots and dual-rank modules place more demand on the CPU’s memory controller than a two-DIMM setup. Choose a kit from MSI’s memory compatibility list, update the BIOS, and expect to reduce speed if high-frequency EXPO settings are unstable. MSI also notes that CUDIMM support and boot frequency depend on CPU series and BIOS updates.
Expansion and graphics-card fit
The reinforced primary PCIe slot is intended for one main graphics card and supports PCIe 5.0 x16 with the appropriate CPU. The second x16-length slot is chipset-connected and operates at up to PCIe 4.0 x4; it is not equivalent to a second CPU-connected x16 slot. A PCIe 3.0 x1 slot provides room for a smaller add-in card.
Slot count alone does not describe the usable expansion. A large triple-slot GPU can cover the lower slots or make them difficult to use. Check the graphics card’s thickness, length, power connector position, and the case’s clearance before planning a capture card, sound card, or additional controller.

Four SATA 6Gbps ports support conventional storage. MSI’s manual lists RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 10 options for SATA storage, plus RAID 0/1 support for M.2 NVMe storage.
Two M.2 sockets are a sensible baseline for a gaming system with an operating-system drive and a second games or project drive. A workstation with several NVMe drives may need a larger board or an add-in storage card. A PCIe 5.0 SSD can produce substantial heat, so use the included M.2 heatsink and maintain airflow around the drive. Check the manual’s clearance diagrams before combining an oversized SSD heatsink with a large GPU.
Wi-Fi 7 and 5GbE networking
Networking is one of this board’s strongest features for a compact build. It combines Realtek 8126 5Gbps wired LAN with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, MLO, and 4KQAM support. MSI lists 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz wireless bands, up to 160MHz channel width, and a rated wireless capability of up to 2.9Gbps.

Actual results depend on a Wi-Fi 7 router, compatible client, channel width, distance, walls, interference, firmware, drivers, and local 6GHz regulations. MSI also ties Wi-Fi 7 readiness and Bluetooth 5.4 availability to Windows 11 version 24H2 and related software support.
Likewise, 5GbE is useful only when the switch, router, NAS, or internet service can exceed ordinary gigabit networking. If the rest of the network is 1GbE, a cheaper 2.5GbE or 1GbE board may offer better value.
Audio and rear I/O
The Realtek ALC897 codec supports 7.1-channel high-definition audio and is adequate for normal gaming, video, and desktop use. It is not, by itself, evidence of premium or studio-grade audio. Buyers who need a stronger headphone amplifier, higher-end DAC implementation, or specialized recording features should compare the complete audio design or plan for a dedicated device.

Flash BIOS is particularly useful for CPU upgrades or a first build that needs firmware support before the processor will boot. Rear USB 2.0 ports are practical for keyboards, mice, printers, and firmware-sensitive devices, although this is not a high-port-count ATX board.
Power delivery and cooling design
MSI specifies a direct 8+2+1 power design, eight Vcore phases using 60A SPS components, 8+4-pin CPU power connectors, an extended heatsink, 7W/mK MOSFET thermal pads, additional choke thermal pads, supplemental PCIe power, and a six-layer PCB with 2oz copper.
These are manufacturer design specifications, not independent measurements. They do not establish VRM temperatures, sustained-load behavior, CPU boost behavior, memory stability, or PCIe 5.0 SSD thermals. For a typical gaming build, the listed power design appears positioned above entry-level AM5 boards, but claims about running every Ryzen 9 processor at maximum sustained power require independent testing.
Who should buy it?
Good fit
- A compact white or light-colored micro-ATX gaming build.
- A Ryzen system that needs four DIMM slots and two M.2 sockets.
- A user with, or plans for, Wi-Fi 7 networking and multi-gigabit Ethernet.
- A builder who wants PCIe 5.0 graphics and storage support with a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 CPU.
- A first-time builder who values Flash BIOS, Clear CMOS, and debug LEDs.
Less suitable
- A workstation needing three or more onboard NVMe drives.
- A system requiring several high-bandwidth expansion cards.
- A buyer prioritizing premium onboard audio.
- A user whose network is limited to Wi-Fi 5/6E and 1GbE, making the networking hardware less valuable.
- Anyone who needs a guaranteed fully white board without checking current product photography.
Installation and troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm that the case supports micro-ATX, not only Mini-ITX.
- Check MSI’s current CPU support list and install the required BIOS version.
- Use an AM5-compatible CPU cooler with the correct mounting hardware and verify height or radiator clearance.
- Install the memory kit in MSI’s recommended two-DIMM slots first; consult the memory compatibility list for high-speed kits.
- Confirm GPU length, thickness, lower-slot clearance, and power-cable space.
- Verify that the PSU has the 24-pin motherboard connector, CPU power connectors, and sufficient GPU capacity.
- Check M.2 heatsink, GPU, and drive clearance before final assembly.
If memory fails to train, return to JEDEC defaults, update the BIOS through MSI’s support page or Flash BIOS function, enable EXPO rather than aggressive manual timings, test with two DIMMs, and lower the memory speed if instability continues. If PCIe 5.0 is not reported, first check the processor: Ryzen 8000 and lower-lane 8500/8300 models do not provide the same graphics and M.2 configuration as Ryzen 7000/9000 CPUs.
Alternatives to consider
MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi6E
This is a separate micro-ATX model with Wi-Fi 6E rather than Wi-Fi 7. It may make more sense if it is substantially cheaper or easier to find and your router does not support Wi-Fi 7. Verify its networking, audio, PCIe, power, and storage specifications independently; it is not a guaranteed identical substitute.

MSI PRO B850M-A WiFi
The MSI US store visibly listed this same-brand micro-ATX alternative with PCIe 5.0, 5GbE, Wi-Fi 7, and a similar six-layer/2oz-copper PCB description. Compare the exact standalone specification, audio, rear I/O, power delivery, M.2 layout, appearance, warranty, and price rather than assuming it is equivalent. A displayed $239.99 promotional price applied to a 1TB Starter Kit bundle, not necessarily the standalone motherboard.

MSI B850 Gaming Plus WiFi
The ATX version offers more board space and expansion flexibility, but measures approximately 243.84 × 304.8 mm. It will not fit a case limited to micro-ATX or Mini-ITX. A lower displayed MSI US store price for this ATX model should not be used to infer the price of the micro-ATX board.
Availability and buying advice
Availability is a significant qualification. The MSI US B850 store category reviewed for this guide listed several B850 products, including the full-size B850 Gaming Plus WiFi and PRO B850M-A WiFi, but did not visibly list the exact B850M Gaming Plus WiFi. Stock varies by country and retailer, so check the exact model at the time of purchase rather than assuming broad US availability.
Compare the exact SKU, board color, wireless standard, M.2 count, rear USB layout, audio codec, price, warranty, and return policy. Do not extrapolate the price of another MSI B850 board or a bundle to this motherboard.
Verdict
The MSI B850M Gaming Plus WiFi is a credible compact AM5 platform with an unusually strong connectivity mix: PCIe 5.0 support, four DDR5 slots, two M.2 sockets, Wi-Fi 7, 5GbE, and useful rear-panel BIOS controls. It is most attractive for a one-GPU white micro-ATX gaming PC built around a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 processor.
Buy it when the exact board is available at a sensible regional price and the seller confirms the desired white appearance. Choose another board if you need more NVMe storage, premium audio, multiple high-bandwidth cards, or if Wi-Fi 7 and 5GbE would go unused. If you plan to use a Ryzen 8000, 8500, or 8300 processor, account for its reduced PCIe behavior before treating the B850 platform as a full PCIe 5.0 solution.
