Meta Quest HDMI Link lets Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S display video from a console, laptop, handheld PC or other HDMI/DisplayPort source—but the headset cannot take HDMI directly. You need a compatible USB capture card to convert the source signal into USB video and audio. The free app launched on August 15, 2024, so this is an existing feature, not a new 2026 launch. Meta’s announcement and the Quest store listing describe the app and setup.

What HDMI Link does—and what it does not

HDMI Link turns a compatible USB capture card into a wired video input for a Quest headset. The signal path is:

Console, handheld, laptop, phone or camera
        ↓ HDMI or DisplayPort output
USB capture card
↓ USB video (UVC) and audio (UAC)
Quest headset running Meta Quest HDMI Link
        ↓
Resizable virtual screen

The headset’s USB-C port does not accept HDMI by itself. The capture card performs the conversion, and HDMI Link displays the resulting feed as a virtual panel. This is external-display viewing—not native HDMI passthrough, wireless casting, or PC VR streaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also different from Meta Quest Link: Quest Link connects a Quest to a PC for PC VR, while HDMI Link displays an external video source. You can use HDMI Link to view a computer’s flat-screen output, but it does not turn that computer’s VR software into a Quest Link session.

Which Quest headsets work?

Headset HDMI Link compatibility
Meta Quest 2 Listed as compatible
Meta Quest Pro Listed as compatible
Meta Quest 3 Listed as compatible
Meta Quest 3S Listed as compatible

The available store compatibility information names Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S. It does not list Quest 1, so do not assume support for that headset. See the Meta Quest HDMI Link listing for availability and current app details.

What you need

  • A supported Quest headset and the free Meta Quest HDMI Link app.
  • A USB capture card that supports UVC video and UAC audio.
  • A USB 3.0/SuperSpeed connection from the capture card to the Quest. Meta recommends SuperSpeed-rated capture cards, cables and adapters for a higher-quality experience.
  • An HDMI cable, DisplayPort connection or suitable source-side adapter connecting your device to the capture card.
  • A source device that actually outputs video over that connection.

Check the capture card’s connector labels before plugging in: the source goes to HDMI In, not HDMI Out. HDMI Out, if present, is typically a pass-through connection for a separate display. A phone or laptop USB-C port is not automatically a video output; the device must support video over USB-C, and the adapter must produce a signal the capture card accepts.

Quest HDMI Link is not restricted to consoles. Suitable sources can include PlayStation and Xbox consoles, a Nintendo Switch with its dock or an appropriate adapter, Steam Deck and other handheld PCs, laptops, desktop PCs, cameras, and phones or tablets with compatible video output. Meta’s listing describes handheld PCs, consoles, laptops and other HDMI/DisplayPort devices; compatibility still depends on the source output and capture card.

How to connect HDMI Link

  1. Update the Quest and install the current Meta Quest HDMI Link app from the Quest store.
  2. Check the capture card’s specifications for UVC video, UAC audio, USB 3.0/SuperSpeed and support for the format you intend to use.
  3. Connect the source device’s HDMI or DisplayPort output to the capture card’s input.
  4. Connect the capture card’s USB data output to the Quest’s USB-C port. Avoid charging-only cables or adapters.
  5. Put on the headset. HDMI Link may open automatically when it detects a capture card; otherwise, launch the app from your library.
  6. Approve the USB-device permission prompt if it appears, then select the detected feed.
  7. Position and resize the virtual screen. If needed, open capture settings and select a format, resolution and frame rate supported by both the source and the card.

For initial setup or troubleshooting, use a conventional source output such as 1080p at 60 Hz. UploadVR reported support for input up to 1080p60; that is a reported ceiling, not a guarantee that every capture card, cable or source will deliver that mode. The app and card must agree on the selected format. The store listing says the local connection does not require an internet connection; you still need access to download the app and obtain updates.

What to expect: screen size, latency and image quality

The feed appears on a flat virtual panel that you can position and resize. It can make a handheld or console screen feel much larger, and the wired source-to-headset path does not rely on Wi-Fi. The app also provides controls for capture format, resolution and frame rate. Whether it can remain visible alongside another VR app depends on the Quest software and the other app’s support for multitasking or passthrough; do not count on it working inside every game.

HDMI Link is not a zero-latency monitor. The capture card has to process the signal, and USB bandwidth, selected format and the Quest display pipeline all affect the result. It is a reasonable option for casual gaming, video that is not copy-protected, or a portable laptop display, but it is a poor choice for competitive play where minimal input delay matters. Its reported input limit is up to 1080p60—not 4K input—and the dossier does not establish universal HDR support.

HDMI Link, Quest Link and other ways to use a large screen

Option Best for What connects
HDMI Link Viewing an external console, handheld, laptop or camera feed Source → capture card → USB → Quest
Meta Quest Link / Air Link Running PC VR software on a VR-capable computer PC VR software and Quest Link connection
Wireless desktop app Viewing a compatible computer without a cable Computer → network → Quest
Portable monitor Lower-latency viewing, sharing, or needs such as 4K/HDR or protected video Source → monitor

Wireless desktop tools such as Meta’s desktop software or third-party apps can be more convenient for compatible computers, but they depend on a network and do not serve as a general input for consoles or cameras. A portable monitor is less immersive, but is usually the more practical choice when low latency, protected streaming video, broad HDMI features or sharing the screen matters.

Important limitations before you buy

  • HDCP-protected video may not display. Capture cards generally cannot pass protected HDMI content, so HDMI Link is not a dependable way to watch every streaming service. UploadVR cites Netflix and Disney+ downloads as examples that may fail over an HDCP-protected output. This is a limitation of the protected signal and capture path, not necessarily a fault in HDMI Link. See UploadVR’s HDMI Link coverage and the store FAQ.
  • Capture cards are not interchangeable. A card may lack UVC, UAC, SuperSpeed bandwidth, the right input, or the resolution and frame-rate support you need.
  • USB speed matters. A USB 2.0 connection can constrain performance. The cable, any adapter or hub, and the capture card all need to support the intended data rate.
  • Power and battery life vary. The capture card draws power from the Quest and can increase battery drain. A handheld PC may also need its own charger. There is no universal wattage recommendation for every combination.
  • It is wired. The capture-card-to-headset connection limits how freely you can move compared with wireless viewing.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The Quest does not detect the capture card

  • Confirm the card supports UVC and that the cable carries data, not just charging.
  • Connect the card directly to the Quest, temporarily removing hubs, extension cables and adapters.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the card, then relaunch HDMI Link. Approve the USB permission prompt if shown.
  • Try a known USB 3.x data cable and check that the card is powered and connected to the Quest’s USB-C port.

The app opens, but the screen is blank

  1. Make sure the source is on and outputting a signal.
  2. Verify that the source cable is connected to the capture card’s HDMI In.
  3. Set the source to a supported mode, starting with 1080p60 or 1080p30.
  4. Check for HDCP. Protected video commonly appears blank even when menus or other unprotected output work.
  5. Confirm that HDMI Link has USB-device permission and that the capture card supports the selected format.

There is audio but no picture

If sound reaches the headset but video does not, the card may be accepting UAC audio while the picture is blocked, unsupported or connected incorrectly. Check the HDMI input and source format first. If the problem occurs only with a movie or streaming service, HDCP is a likely cause.

The image is choppy or the frame rate is low

Check whether the Quest and capture card negotiated USB 3.0 SuperSpeed rather than USB 2.0 Hi-Speed; the app’s instant statistics overlay can show the connection speed. Then replace questionable cables, remove hubs or low-quality adapters, confirm the card’s SuperSpeed support, and set the source and app to a matching format. Test at 1080p60, then lower the frame rate or resolution if needed. The store FAQ also suggests flipping the USB-C connector if the connection behaves differently by orientation.

USB permission fails after a headset update

Meta community discussions have included reports of HDMI Link USB-permission trouble around particular software releases, including v74 and testing around v76. Those reports do not establish a universal problem in current software. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the card, rebooting the Quest, relaunching or reinstalling HDMI Link, and granting USB permission again. Test without a hub or extension cable. If the issue began after an update, check Meta’s community release discussion and current support information before replacing hardware.

Should you use HDMI Link?

HDMI Link is useful if you already own a Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 or Quest 3S and want a large private screen for a console, handheld, laptop or other external source. The app is free, but the setup is not: it requires a compatible capture card and a working cable path. Check UVC, UAC, USB 3.x and input-format support before buying, and avoid it if your priority is competitive-gaming latency, 4K/HDR, HDCP-protected streaming or a cable-free experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For PC VR, use Quest Link or Air Link instead. For a low-latency conventional display or protected video, a monitor or TV is generally the better tool.
